Is it primarily bound to the power and dynamism of the "owners" and propagators of the (monotheistic) religion, or instead simply to the strength of its philosophical basis and credo? To what degree can we explain a well-spread monotheistic or universal religion without referring to political aspects and processes? And, to what degree can we explain a religion solely in pure spiritual and philosophical terms?

That is why an English version with some addenda is proposed in the hope that colleagues might comment on it, elucidating important details concerning this institution. Thus, the paper intends to identify analogies with ancient and early medieval Iranian and (East) Roman/Byzantine statehood. However, similarities may prove to be purely formal rather than of a genetic (or causal) nature and, therefore, should not lead to final conclusions, especially in the absence of further unambiguous information coming from primary sources.

During much of the ninth century, in any case up to ca. 860, Bulgaria was a de facto khaganate. However, the Bulgar ruler is never mentioned as khagan in either contemporary inscriptions or Byzantine sources. Instead, the epigraphic evidence suggests that the title of the Bulgar ruler was either 'k(h)anasybigi' (attested between 822 and 836) or that described by the rather more common Greek terms 'archon' , 'archegos' , kyrios' , and 'hegemon'. 3 Th e title 'khagan' applied to a Bulgar ruler only appears in later sources. For example, the so-called Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea, written in Latin by Gregory, the late twelft h-century archbishop of Bar, calls Boris-Michael (852-889; d. 907) a khagan: "Ruler over them [the Bulgars] was a certain Boris, whom they called in his language cagan, which in our language means emperor. " 4 Gregory wrote his Chronicle in order to justify the elevation of his see to the rank of archbishopric in the circumstances surrounding the coronation of Vukan, ruler of Zeta (Duklja), by Pope Innocent III. Although the status of archbishopric had already been recognized in 1089, the bishop of Bar had been for the entire twelft h century a mere suff ragan of the archbishop of Dubrovnik. Gregory's goal was therefore

In his opinion, in the period between the 7th and the 14th centuries (the First and the Second Bulgarian Tsardom, divided by the period of the Byzantine rule over Bulgaria, 1018-1185) the East and the West had two 'segments', each provisionally called here 'northern' and 'southern'. Despite some influences that came from the southern 'segment' of the West (the lands of modern Italy) esp. in the 14th century, in its 'high' segment Bulgarian culture was permanently marked by the specifics of the Christian Orthodox Tsardom/Empire, which was related to that of the Byzantines, i.e. from the 'southern' segment of the East; however, the Bulgarians imitated and transformed some of its characteristics. Special attention is paid to Hesychasm and its influence over the Byzantino-Bulgarian, and more generally, Byzantino-Slavic Eastern Orthodox community in that same 14th century. In fact the 'northern' segment of the East represented in this period by the Cumans, Mongols, and Tatars failed in leaving some significant influence in the so-called 'high' culture; some of these nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples, and first of all the Cumans, were assimilated by the Bulgarians and became Christians.
