The Fragility of Language and the Encounter with God: On the Contingency and Legitimacy of Doctrine, 2021

Klug applies this account to humanity's encounter with God and its translation into language. Because there exists no neutral epistemological standpoint, Klug integrates contemporary insights on the theory of the subject (especially those of Žižek and Badiou) and presents humanity as a subject that transforms its experience of and with God into language and places it in a shared space for reception. But can the speaking subject have authority and legitimacy in making statements about the Absolute? What role do the Christian faithful play in evaluating that authority?
These questions are addressed both to biblical texts and doctrinal statements. Crucial is the Catholic perspective that legitimate statements of faith and insights are only possible through the Holy Spirit. However, humanity cannot command or control the Holy Spirit but can only show its influence indirectly through the receptive tradition of the universal church. The Fragility of Language and the Encounter with God argues that statements of faith cannot overcome contingency. Instead, the Catholic notion of receptive tradition attempts to cope rationally with the fragility of perception and language in humanity's orientation toward God.

Here, grace renders as the theological theme of facing God in the interpersonal encounter of everyday life as well as in liturgy. Subsequently, becoming oneself as a felicitous being depends in a heteronomous way on living in community. Aesthetics, irony, eroticism, and narcissism display in this analysis the categories for rereading original sin by prioritizing the salvation work of Christ.

The revelation challenges humanity’s capacity of verbal expression in order to give a testimony. Aspects of current philosophy (Žižek, Badiou, Agamben, Eco), hermeneutics (Searle, Gadamer) and psychoanalysis (Lacan) render assistance to this task of understanding how this encounter is taken into the fields of language.
The horizon of this inquiry, though, also refers to the writings of the Church's Magisterium. Decisive is here the Holy Spirit who not only enables faith but also provides the Church in the sensus fidelium with an infallible perspective. An ecclesiastical reception through the ages can mark an indirect demonstration of gifting process by the Spirit in both aspects (textualization & reception).

The biblical basis for this is the Pauline understanding of truth, whereby Christ appears as the living truth and the community opened up by him functions beyond binary categories. The linkage to philosophy results from the return to Kierkegaard's conception of irony, the parrhesia according to Foucault, and Agamben's examination of the oath. As a result, the investigation presents truth as an existential horizon for the subjective stance, with the Christian life being conceived of as an ironic form of existence and the church as an ironic society.

The outcome of this existential attempt is a merely self-referred living that becomes obsessed with one’s personal affairs. This unsound shift into an inward-looking existence leads to a significant loss of quality of life. Theologically speaking, we can call this self-obsession as a form of living hell. Besides the conceptions of eroticism and depression, narcissism serves as a key category to clarify this attitude in broader terms.

This paper looks at the literature of Franz Kafka in the horizon of the absolute and irony. In order to the literature of Franz Kafka, the literature of Sören Kierkegaard is considered to give a different view on irony and the absolute. This work closes with a theological prospect about the relation between art, literature, and faith.
