Standard LSD measurements for body height (cm), arm span (cm), arm, hand and leg lengths (cm) were recorded for a sample of 106 junior (under 18) male handball players that participated in the study mean values in most of the LSD measures for body height (176.16±7.93cm), hand length (21.12±2.85cm), leg length (40.32±2.96cm) and arm span (187.57±10.05cm). The GKs, however, recorded the highest mean values in arm length (32.41±2.46cm), while the CBPs had the lowest recorded mean values in all the LSD measures. When data were analysed for positional differences, the IBP were significantly taller (F=3.02; p<0.02) with longer arm span (F=2.98, p<0.02) than players in all other positional groups. There were no significant differences in arm, hand and leg lengths of the players. The obtained position related difference suggest that the possession of superior body height and arm span are prerequisites for players playing and desirous to play in the inside back position. These findings could provide realistic morphological benchmarks for the selection of potential junior male handball players competing in specific individual positions and positional playing groups.

A total of 106 junior male handball players participated in this study. The players were divided into two playing quality or performance groups of above average or (competitively efficient) (n = 26) and average or competitively less efficient (n = 80) levels. A combination of individual players’ quality as determined subjectively by a consortium of national handball coaches and team ranking achieved at a championship were used to achieve this purpose. 22 anthropometric attributes were measured for each subject. Similarly, 6 body composition variables were estimated. The results showed that the above average players were better endowed morphologically than the average players particularly in the Longitudinal Skeleton Dimensionality (LSD), Transverse Skeleton Dime...

Research paper thumbnail of Gender as a determinant of coaches’ legal duties towards athletes accomplishment in Edo State

Journal of Anthropology of Sport and Physical Education

The study examined gender as a determinant of coaches’ practice of legal duties towards athletes ... more The study examined gender as a determinant of coaches’ practice of legal duties towards athletes in Edo State. The population of the study comprised of 187 coaches in Edo State. The multistage sampling technique was used to draw the 100 coaches that were selected as the sample for this study. A Situational Judgment Test (SJT) was the instrument applied. The research instrument was validated and its reliability was tested using the Alpha statistic and reliability of 0.67 was obtained as reliability coefficient. The Fisher’s exact test gave a p-value of 0.136, leading to the conclusion that there was no significant difference in coaches’ practice of legal duties towards athletes based on their gender. The null hypothesis was therefore retained. It was concluded that that men are not more likely to take reasonable care of the athletes due to their preference for coaching roles. As a result, more women should be given the opportunity to coach since gender does not determine the practice...

The pretest-posttest randomized experimental design was employed for the study. The population of the study comprised one hundred and twenty (120) obese undergraduates, out of which a total of twenty-four (24) obese undergraduates made up the sample for the study. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select the participants. The anthropometric profiles of the participants were descriptively analyzed using mean and standard deviation, while independent sample t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Statistical significance was accepted at p value of <0.05. The results obtained indicated an increase in Serum BDNF (1.05 1.4 vs 1.42 2.2) among HIIT group, with no statistical significant difference. It was therefore concluded that the HIIT protocol-initiated alterations in the serum BDNF concentration of the ob...

The study examined the influence of aerobic and resistance exercises on White Blood Cells (WBC), Red Blood Cells (RBC), Haematocrit (HCT), and Platelets (PLT). The pretest-posttest control-group experimental design was employed in this study. Eighty-eight HIV-seropositive patients in the first two stages of HIV and attending the outpatient clinic at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital participated in the study. Randomization was done into control (30) and two experimental groups, aerobic exercise (28) and resistance exercise (30). The experimental groups exercised for 45 minutes, thrice a week for 10 weeks and the non-experimental group received usual anti-retroviral drugs and counseling. The initial intensity of the exercise was 60% HRmax and 1-RM and progression was by 10% every 3 weeks. Haematologic parameters were recorded initially and on termination of 10 weeks for all three groups. Frequency, mean, standard deviation, and analysis of co-variates (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. The Bonferroni pairwise comparison was used as a Post-hoc test to identify the source of differences. The outcome of this research showed that exercise resulted in significant alterations in haematologic parameters of WBC, RBC, HCT, and PLT. Recommendations were made based on the outcome of this research that health personnel should prescribe exercise for HIV-infected persons due to the enhancement of haematologic parameters which in turn improves health.

Meanwhile, the isometric exercise regimen stands to be a preferable intervention for at-risk subjects even at acute phases as it could be carried out at a resting position compared to aerobic and resistance exercise regimens. Objective: This study investigated the acute effect of isometric exercise training protocol on blood pressure of hypertensive stroke survivors in the

The survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised 187 coaches in Edo State. The multistage sampling technique was used to obtain 100 coaches that were used as the sample for this study. A Knowledge of Duty of Care Questionnaire (KDCQ) was the instrument used to collect data, which was validated and its reliability was established using the Crombach- Alpha statistic. A reliability of 0.72 was obtained. A null hypothesis was tested and analyzed using the Fishers exact test, at 0.05 alpha level. The Fisher’s exact test gave a p-value of 0.246, leading to the conclusion that there was no significant difference in coaches’ legal duties knowledge based on their educational qualifications. The null hypothesis was therefore retained and it was recommended that further studies should be carried out to investigate other f...

The results revealed that Nigerian junior handball players were predominantly mesomorphic ectomorphs. From the perspectives of the playing position, the pivot and the centre back players were differently classified as ectomorphic mesomorph and mesomorph ectomorphs respectively. The goalkeeper, inside back and wing players were classified as mesomorphic ectomorphs. The ectomorphy component was significantly higher than the mesomorphy and endomorphy components with the inside back and wing players having significantly higher ectomorphy ratings than the pivot...

The pre-test, post-test randomized control experimental design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised five hundred and twenty-two (522) student athletes and a total of fiftyfour (54) student athletes made up the study sample. Proportionate sampling technique was used to select participants for this study. Blood samples were obtained from the participants before and after a 10-week Calisthenic-Circuit training programme to assess biochemical adjustments to serum total protein, albumin and globulin.
