The topic of my work is linked to the importance of culture and schooling during Colonial period.... more The topic of my work is linked to the importance of culture and schooling during Colonial period. The work will begin by analysing how learning to write and to read was achieved by the main characters of Kim by Rudyard Kipling and Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I will go on by focusing on how culture was only a mere instrument in the hands of colonizers, that helped them subjugate people who lived in those territories they invaded, people who already had a culture, but had to learn to write and to read in order to become civilised, and how this aspect emerges in the novels I have chosen.
