Given the large number of witnesses still held in loco and their high variety, Montecassino represents a particularly advantageous, if not unique, situation for the analysis of the material and the study of textual changes undergone by the Bible as a book during the Middle Ages.
For manuscript historians, the Bible in the form of a codex represents a handcrafted object of the utmost importance: it was the sacred text par excellence and served as a vital reference point in the lives of medieval monks. In addition, it functioned as an indispensable tool for daily liturgical celebration, and as a study text and individual reading book for the purpose of moral edification. The manuscript collection of the Montecassino Abbey presents an exemplary case study, both for the total number of biblical manuscripts it preserves (just under a hundred, and for the diversity of types (complete ‘monolithic’ Bibles, Old and/or New Testament sequences of varying size and physiognomy, and individual glossed books with commentary beside the text), as well as for the presence of a significant group of codices in Beneventan minuscule produced for internal use within the same Abbey or in its dependencies in a period centered around the eleventh century (with sporadic extensions into the twelfth and thirteenth). The present catalogue aims to deepen our current knowledge of the presence, transmission and reception of the Bible in one of the most important and emblematic medieval Benedictine monasteries.

Determined by intellectual or practical needs, this process is never neutral in itself. The resulting proximity and juxtaposition of previously distant contents, challenge previous knowledge and trigger further developments.
With a vast selection of highly representative case studies – from India, Islamic Asia and Spain to Ethiopian cultures, from Ancient Christian to Coptic, and Medieval European domains – this volume deals with manuscripts planned or growing and resulting in time to comprise ‘more than one’. Whatever their contents – the natural world and related recipes, astronomical tables or personal notes, documentary, religious and even highly revered holy texts – codicological and textual features of these manuscripts reveal how similar needs received different answers in varying contexts and times.

Due to the privileged focus on the text in the columns, these annotations and the practices that produced them have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. The vast richness of extant verbal and figurative notes accompanying the biblical texts in the intercolumns and margins of the manuscript pages have thus been largely overlooked.
The case studies gathered in this volume explore Jewish and Christian biblical manuscripts through the lens of their annotations, addressing the various relationships between the primary layer of text and the secondary notes, and exploring the roles and functions of annotated manuscripts as cultural artifacts. By approaching biblical manuscripts as potential "notepads", the volume offers theoretical reflection and empirical analyses of the ways in which secondary notes may shed new light on the development and transmission of text traditions, the shifting engagement with biblical manuscripts over time, as well as the change of use and interpretation that may result from the addition of the notes themselves.

Balbir, Nalini (Paris, EPHE) Functions of Multiple Texts Manuscripts in India: the Jain Case The Jain manuscript culture is one of the most productive in India. The issue of multiple texts manuscripts, which are numerous and diverse in this religious tradition, has never been really addressed although it is a reality which can be observed first in palm leaf manuscripts (11th-14th centuries) and then in paper manuscripts (14th c. onwards). They raise practical problems for which the authors of manuscript catalogues have to take editorial decisions, as we will show. The main part of the paper, however, will focus on the functions of these manuscripts, the ways the selections are made and what they tell us about dynamics of knowledge. Examples will be taken mainly from the areas of liturgical texts and canonical scriptures. 2. For book historians, the arrangement of the lists on the page, the use of visual and art historical devices to highlight the individual tituli, the presence and hierarchy of initial and final titles (both of the biblical books and their accompanying texts) are all aspects that may allow to better understand the the work of artisans and copyists and the challenges involved in transcribing the “Book among the books”, in the multiplicity of its forms. In the specific perspective of paratextual studies, chapter lists obviously play a privileged role in the analysis of the interplay between the Biblical books and the variety of its surrounding (organizing, interpretive, navigational, accompanying, etc.) tools and materials. Last but not least, chapter lists are texts of varying structure and lenght, which can – and should – also be analyzed from the point of view of their structure (descriptions, quotes or paraphrases, summaries, etc.), literary choices and quality.

From the Thames to the Euphrates. Intersecting Perspectives on Greek, Latin and Hebrew Bibles / De la Tamise à l’Euphrate. Regardes croisés sur les Bibles grecques, latines et hebraïques, Berlin, de Gruyter (Manuscripta Biblica, 9), 2023

The volume first explores the different ways in which complete Bibles, in one or more volumes from the same production (pandects), were produced in different places and at different times, with an emphasis on their structural complexity. Complete Bibles are rare in all the traditions considered but especially interesting given the technical challenges that their production posed for craftsmen.
Partial Bibles represent a different way of transmitting the biblical text, whether they consist of a choice of parts of the Bible, assembled and reassembled in more or less original ways, or in the design of new types (such as the "Pentateuch-Megillot-Haftarot", produced in the Ashkenazi world before 1300).
Bibles with commentaries are a very varied category, illustrated here by two examples: first, the pandects produced by Theodulf († 821), in which the marginal notes are akin to a critical apparatus; second, Hebrew manuscripts containing systematic exegetical commentaries in sophisticated layouts that also vary according to their areas of production.
Finally, the presentation of new fragments of a very ancient scroll of Genesis and Exodus from the Cairo Genizah sheds new light on its insertion into the Masoretic tradition, and to document the existence of partial Bibles in the form of scrolls.
The volume shows the value of a comparative approach to ancient Bibles and hopefully represents a further step towards a more comprehensive perception of a history of the Bible.

constitutes an exemplary case study for the
tradition of the Latin Bible, both for the large number
of preserved testimonies and for the variety of typologies
attested. Particularly significant is the presence of
an important nucleus of codices in Beneventan minuscule
(21 out of a total of 48), produced at the Abbey in a
time span centered on the eleventh century and still kept
in situ. They are analyzed in the present contribution
through an integrated approach, which ranges from the
in-depth study of their structure and contents, to a first
examination of the paratexts, such as prologues, chapter

In such a field, a key role is played by both pattern recognition and feature extraction methods, which provide quantitative arguments for supporting expert deductions. In this paper, we present a pattern recognition system which tries to solve a typical palaeographic problem: to distinguish the different scribes who have worked together to the transcription of a single medieval book. In the specific case of a high standardized book typology (the so called Latin "Giant Bible"), we wished to verify if the extraction of certain specifically devised features, concerning the layout of the page, allowed to obtain satisfactory results. To this aim, we have also performed a statistical analysis of the considered features in order to characterize their discriminant power. The experiments, performed on a large dataset of digital images from the so called "Avila Bible"-a giant Latin copy of the whole Bible produced during the XII century between Italy and Spain-confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Far less commonplace are studies specifically dedicated to the analysis of the codex’s material and graphic aspects. The present contribution stems from the opportunity―generously provided to the authors―to study the original codex, and also from a desire to closely re-examine its codicological and palaegraphical features, with the aim of producing an updated status quaestionis enhanced with some new critical insights.

Without doubt, it was the most read-and probably the most transcribed-text of the time, even if we still lack an exhaustive census of Latin Bibles. The transposition of the 'Book'-a message laden with profound meanings-into the 'book', an object bearing less explicit but in any event equally important cultural connotations, did not countenance imprecise or amateurish solutions; rather, it constituted the ultimate expression of professionalism in the creation of a manuscript. This insistence on the utmost quality also represents an aspect of conservatism-in fact, more than any other book the Bible had to conform scrupulously to the ideals of uniformity and harmonious proportions that were customarily aimed at by book manufacturing artisans. Such an objective demanded as little deviation as possible from the precepts established by tradition, as well as a high degree of presentational uniformity. The tendency towards stability can be seen as part of a dialectical process; indeed, given that in the medieval West the Bible never ceased to play a lively and integral role in the cultural fabric of society, its omnipresence meant that from time to time it had to be adapted to prevailing material, graphic and decorative canons and, above all, to the functional requirements of different historical periods. Thus the way in which the Bible manifested itself more generally represents a faithful reflection of the evolution of the book structure, writing and ornamental elements. Additionally, the Bible constitutes a sort of 'geometric place', around which one can observe a continual intertwining of the various expressions emanating from the development of Christianity and the Church. Marked by doctrinal disputes, issues relating to spiritual renewal and, not least, the struggle for power, the history of the Bible is replete with profound and conspicuous changeschanges which, although sometimes very apparent, are not always easy to interpret. The physical object acts as a vehicle, and even, on occasion, as an ||

The contributing specialists will be grouped not by language (Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic) but by the subject to be studied in terms of texts, paratexts, forms or possible functional uses.
