The l$e quality of industrial countries could never lower, $ trading of extended artefacts (products-services) will be based on exchanging information-intensive deliveries. fie wealth build-up will follow in the knowledge sociefy, fostering eco-consistent behaviours by balancing tangibles decay by intangibles increase. The idea is described by the KILT model, which characterises by the TYPUS metrics. The paper discusses some topics of the prospected scenario, underlining supply chain issues, showing that the ICT options are critical aids to create the required information environment. Some basic trends are sketched, focusing on products-sewices trading, supplied by extended enterprises, under supervision of independent certifying bodies.

Process automation and intelligent manufacturing are important factors for competing successfully... more Process automation and intelligent manufacturing are important factors for competing successfully in today's international economy. The survey considers the use of these tools within the clothing industry where low cost labour has especially driven the marketplace, in recent decades, toward productive break-up, with relevant drawbacks on preserving the process control uniformity. Several hints are described for the use of modern manufacturing tools in the production flow of clothing and in the management of the related operations. Emphasis is placed on maintaining a high quality product in a customised production environment. The presentation begins by exploring the automated retrieval of fabric from a warehouse; it continues with a study of the laying and cutting process exploring mixed mode schedules, combining batch and one-of-a-kind delivery; and concludes by considering the assembly and sewing aspects of the manufacturing process. For clothing manufacturers in developed countries, the automation concepts presented here offer an alternative (and perhaps the only alternative) to out-sourcing and overseas production.

Only at the millennium turnover, the ecology globalisation shows the impeding threats of over-depletion/pollution, exceeding the extant recovery and reclamation capabilities of the environment. The new imperative turns to be the ‹sustainable growth›, with caginess in defining if the trends can be positive, being conditioned by the empowered recycling, retrieval and renovation measures. In process clamping and handlimg, it is often required to grasp, with the same gripper, objects h... more In process clamping and handlimg, it is often required to grasp, with the same gripper, objects having different shape and size. The paper introduces outfits , studied to solve this problem. Both, the articulated clamp and the clamp with flexible elements can automatically adapt their shape to grasp rigid and deformable objects; both principles has been tested with prototypes. Of special interest is the clamp with flexible elements; this solution, at the same time, presents an easy design and performs a firm and safe grasp. Next, as example application, an underwater cutting robot that adopts the latter gripper is presented. Finally, the potential impact in the industry of these devices is considered.

The technical challenge is impressive, not less than the socio-cultural efforts. The paper presents a survey of the state of the arts, especially discussing: the development requirements at the product-service design phases, purposely dealing with the lifecycle and end-of-life key prerequisites; the integration conditions at the supply chain management phases, wittingly discussing the networking aids and related business changes. The presentation is limited to important hints. The usefulness of the discussion concerns the consideration of the lifecycle eco-consistency as total entrepreneurial challenge: it is not enough to separately tackle the design prerequisites out of the enterprise integration, with all needed functions and facilities; and vice-versa. The paper presents a noteworthy example achievement, specially addressing the requirement analysis, as basic step to develop the instrumental architecture for the measurement and actuation equipment, and to develop the suited remote sensing and control environment, based on an innovative client-server layout. The approach introduces actual design demands by explanatory instances, to show how the approach is exploited for the case achievement.
