This paper aims to analyze and compare the ontological and epistemological me a-structures of cla... more This paper aims to analyze and compare the ontological and epistemological me a-structures of classical Islamic thought that are still influential; by identifying the position of reason in the different paradigms and tracing the impact of each paradigm on the relationship with the religious other. This systematic summary aims to formulate a dialogical theology based on a mystical approach, in order to overcome the ontological dualism that has signed the classical Islamic theology, Kalām, and its conflictual and polemical implications. This reflection’s starting point is studying Islamic approaches to other religions, mainly two opposite ones: the polemical theological approach and the inclusive Sufi approach, analyzing their epistemological and ontological roots.

The article discusses the Arab revolutions and the challenges these countries face while trying t... more The article discusses the Arab revolutions and the challenges these countries face while trying to build democratic nations. The author addresses the possible objections to the use of the term ‘revolution’ highlighting the complexity of current events and analyzing the factors that argue for a radical change and a complete break with the past. The second part of the article, replace the Arab revolutions in the history of political thoughts. After discussing the main Islamic thoughts and conceptions of the State, the author concludes by outlining the most significant elements of the political theology and draws a parallel with the positions of the leader of the Tunisian Islamic party (Ennahdha).

This article analyzes the three introductory epistles to Sufi hermeneutics written by al-Ḥarāllī,... more This article analyzes the three introductory epistles to Sufi hermeneutics written by al-Ḥarāllī, a mystic of Andalusian origin from the seventh/thirteenth century. According to this author, the objective of the Scriptures is to explain human beings to themselves. The revelation, received through a particular understanding called fahm, contains transformative knowledge that can change the life of the reader. In this foundational work, al-Ḥarāllī explains the relationship between the Qurʾān and preceding Scriptures, recognizing in the Qurʾān their unity and fulfillment. Dedicating the final chapter of the third epistle to the seven religions mentioned in the Qurʾān, which are, rather, ethical prototypes, he seeks to internalize the Qurʾānic critique expounded on each of these categories. In a reading that goes beyond polemics and offers significant elements to the Islamic theology of religions, al-Ḥarāllī demonstrates how the aim of the Qurʾānic narratives is not to present information about the past but rather to provide moral education for the Islamic community and the reader.

A cursory reading of Rūmī’s Maṯnawī suggests that the author follows the dominant Qur’ānic interp... more A cursory reading of Rūmī’s Maṯnawī suggests that the author follows the dominant Qur’ānic interpretation denying Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion. Closer analysis demonstrates, however, that Rūmī interprets the Cross and considers its spiritual significance in a subtle and symbolic way. This study addresses this contradiction by developing a synthesis that clarifies Rūmī’s spiritual anthropology. In the Islamic context, his writing constitutes a significant attempt to understand and interpret the Christian Scriptures and overcome sensitive points of conflict that are considered dividing lines between the faiths.

The article traces the key concepts and methodological steps that make an Islamic theology of non... more The article traces the key concepts and methodological steps that make an Islamic theology of nonviolence plausible. It offers the tools for a critical reading of classical texts, “sacred” history, and globalized modernity. The article deals with the theology of nonviolence as part of modern and contemporary theologies: those of religious pluralism, feminism and liberation, which are interconnected and share the same hermeneutical knots and challenges. Nonviolence theology can be considered the big umbrella that includes all these aspects. It is a postcolonial approach, nurtured by Sufism, that aims to liberate theology from past and present power claims and build the bases for radical reform.

Modernity has forced religions to lose, gradually and in different ways, control over public spac... more Modernity has forced religions to lose, gradually and in different ways, control over public space, despite various attempts of recovery and repositioning. «Fundamentalism» is one of many possible answers to modern challenges. Can we find other answers that guarantee more freedom, justice, and peace in Post-colonial Muslim societies and States? The crisis of religions in the modern world interrogates the concept of religion itself: What is it for? What is its social and political mission? What does religion offer today in public space? The author starts from the Tunisian experience, to propose an approach to the problematic relationship between religion and politics, trying to overcome the crisis by reconciling the Secular state with religious values and principles. The article is not a summary of the extensive current debate; nevertheless, it is in dialogue with all the efforts in this field.

terms of theological, ethical and political contents. It is an important step in the history of Muslim-Christian relations, which tries to answer the challenges facing the contemporary world, providing a set of moral values and practical proposals to get out of the global crisis at all levels. The document attempts to be a living and critical conscience of humanity, going beyond the specific frameworks of Islam and Christianity, to be an open invitation to all.

Dans une étude analogique et complémentaire à celles des théologiens chrétiens, l’auteur tente de formuler un noyau de théologie islamique du christianisme, qui fait partie de la théologie islamique des religions. La question fondamentale est la suivante : que peut comprendre et apprécier un musulman des dogmes chrétiens, en particulier de la crucifixion, mort et résurrection du Christ ? De manière apolémique, l’auteur cherche à aller au-delà des formules théologiques pour trouver un sens spirituel commun et une éthique partagée. Dans ce contexte, l’éclairage que porte la théologie mystique islamique est très utile.

He has till date authored three books and some articles as part of a complete project, i.e. the application of the methodology on all the Qur’anic text: Le Festin, une lecture de la sourate al-Mā’ida, Collection «Rhétorique Sémitique», Lethielleux, Paris, 2007 (453 p). Translated in English as The Banquet: A Reading of the Fifth sūra of the Qur'ān, Convivium Press, Series “Rhetorica Semitica”, Miami, 2009, (565 p.). La Composition du Coran, Collection « Rhétorique sémitique », Gabalda, Paris, 2012 (200 p.). The English translation, The Composition of the Qur'ān: Rhetorical Analysis, is expected on March 2015. His last published book is entitled: Une apocalypse coranique, Lecture des trente-trois dernières sourates du Coran, Gabalda, Collection « Rhétorique sémitique », Paris, 2014 (364 p.).
The objective of this paper is to present the work of Cuypers, especially his book The Composition of the Qur'ān, as methodology, techniques and specific concepts and terminology, with examples from the Qur’ān. It could be considered as a general introduction for the people who encounter this kind of approach for the first time, or as a preparation for eventual workshops, exercises or practical papers. The paper also intends to focus on the hermeneutical implications of this methodology and the criticism and objections against it.

The starting point in this reflection is the study of the Islamic approaches towards the other religions. Among the main ones, there are two opposite approaches: the theological polemical approach, and the comprehensive Sufi one. In order to dig deeper into the real reasons of this radical opposition, I have studied their respective cosmic visions and basic ontological and epistemological frameworks.

It is an Islamic approach in dialogue with Catholicism, especially with the Encyclical Letter Laudato Si' of Pope Francis. Ecology will remain a vital topic for the future, not only for interreligious dialogue, but even more so for our models of economics and politics.
ينطلق الباحث ممّا انتهى إليه في مقدمة كتابه "نقد الأديان عند ابن حزم الأندلسي"،من تقييم للمقاربات... more ينطلق الباحث ممّا انتهى إليه في مقدمة كتابه "نقد الأديان عند ابن حزم الأندلسي"،من تقييم للمقاربات الإسلامية التراثية للأديان الأخرى، مع رسم خطوط منهجية عريضة للاستفادة من هذا التراث المتشعّب، بالتركيز على مقاربتين متقابلتين، هما: المقاربة الكلامية الجدالية، والمقاربة الصوفية التفهّمية. ولا تقتصر هذه الدراسة على إعطاء الأمثلة على هاتين المقاربتين ضمن سياقاتهما التاريخية، ولكنها تسعى لبيان الأسس المعرفية التي أدّت إلى التباين بينهما. المقصود بـ "المقاربات التراثية" تلك التي ظهرت منذ التأسيس الفكري للحضارة الإسلامية، عندما ولدت مختلف العلوم والمعارف الإسلامية بمناهجها المتعدّدة، قبل عصور الانحطاط المتأخّرة، وبطبيعة الحال قبل صدمة الحداثة واللقاء بالعلوم الغربية والمقاربات الجديدة. يُؤرّخ عادةً لفترة التأسيس الفكري والعلمي للتراث الإسلامي بالفترة التي تبدأ من نهاية العصر الأموي والقرون الأولى من العصر العبّاسي. وعلى الرغم من أنه يؤرّخ لبداية عصر الانحطاط -من الناحية الرمزية على الأقل- بسقوط بغداد على يد المغول سنة 656هـ/1258م، فإنّ القرن السابع الهجري/الثالث عشر الميلادي قد عرف أوج تطوّر المقاربة الصوفية ممثّلة بعلَمين كبيرين هما محيي الدين بن عربي (ت. 638هـ/1240م) وجلال الدين الرومي (ت. 672ه/1273م). من دون أن ننسى تأثيرهما اللاحق في الثقافات الإيرانية والتركية والهندية، فلم تتناول الدراسة التصوّف الهندي على سبيل المثال، بل اكتفت بإشارات إلى إسهامَيْ ابن عربي والرومي. كما لم تُعن بالأديان في القرآن الكريم وتفاسيره وترجماته، فهو موضوع يحتاج إلى بحث آخر. الهدف من هذه الخلاصة المركّزة هو فتح باب المناقشة لبدء مشروع يحتاج لسواعد فكرية عديدة.

ينطلق الباحث ممّا انتهى إليه في مقدمة كتابه "نقد الأديان عند ابن حزم الأندلسي"،من تقييم للمقاربات... more ينطلق الباحث ممّا انتهى إليه في مقدمة كتابه "نقد الأديان عند ابن حزم الأندلسي"،من تقييم للمقاربات الإسلامية التراثية للأديان الأخرى، مع رسم خطوط منهجية عريضة للاستفادة من هذا التراث المتشعّب، بالتركيز على مقاربتين متقابلتين، هما: المقاربة الكلامية الجدالية، والمقاربة الصوفية التفهّمية. ولا تقتصر هذه الدراسة على إعطاء الأمثلة على هاتين المقاربتين ضمن سياقاتهما التاريخية، ولكنها تسعى لبيان الأسس المعرفية التي أدّت إلى التباين بينهما. المقصود بـ "المقاربات التراثية" تلك التي ظهرت منذ التأسيس الفكري للحضارة الإسلامية، عندما ولدت مختلف العلوم والمعارف الإسلامية بمناهجها المتعدّدة، قبل عصور الانحطاط المتأخّرة، وبطبيعة الحال قبل صدمة الحداثة واللقاء بالعلوم الغربية والمقاربات الجديدة. يُؤرّخ عادةً لفترة التأسيس الفكري والعلمي للتراث الإسلامي بالفترة التي تبدأ من نهاية العصر الأموي والقرون الأولى من العصر العبّاسي. وعلى الرغم من أنه يؤرّخ لبداية عصر الانحطاط -من الناحية الرمزية على الأقل- بسقوط بغداد على يد المغول سنة 656هـ/1258م، فإنّ القرن السابع الهجري/الثالث عشر الميلادي قد عرف أوج تطوّر المقاربة الصوفية ممثّلة بعلَمين كبيرين هما محيي الدين بن عربي (ت. 638هـ/1240م) وجلال الدين الرومي (ت. 672ه/1273م). من دون أن ننسى تأثيرهما اللاحق في الثقافات الإيرانية والتركية والهندية، فلم تتناول الدراسة التصوّف الهندي على سبيل المثال، بل اكتفت بإشارات إلى إسهامَيْ ابن عربي والرومي. كما لم تُعن بالأديان في القرآن الكريم وتفاسيره وترجماته، فهو موضوع يحتاج إلى بحث آخر. الهدف من هذه الخلاصة المركّزة هو فتح باب المناقشة لبدء مشروع يحتاج لسواعد فكرية عديدة.

The “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together,” signed by Pope Francis an... more The “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together,” signed by Pope Francis and Sheikh al-Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyeb, on February 4, 2019, in Abu Dhabi, marks a historic milestone in Pope Francis’ relationship with the Muslim world. It is, in fact, the first document jointly signed by the head of the Catholic Church and a Muslim leader, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, one of the most globally recognized Islamic religious institutions. Notably, it was unveiled and signed during the first visit of a pontiff to the Arabian Peninsula, the cradle of Islam. Significantly, the Document commemorates the 800th anniversary of the encounter between St. Francis and Sultan al-Kamil in Damietta, Egypt. In honor of this event, the Pope chose to visit two Arab nations with Muslim majorities: the United Arab Emirates, in the far east of the Arab world, and the Kingdom of Morocco, in the far west. Symbolically, the Pope, who bears the name of the Saint, wanted to meet two “sultans,” and to sign a Document with a prominent religious authority based in Cairo, the heart of the Arab world. This gesture represented an embrace of the Arab world from both ends during a challenging historical period for the entire region. The first meeting between Francis and the Sultan was at the time of the Crusades, and the recent meeting coincided with a period marked by wars and conflicts, including those in Syria and Yemen, as well as the heightened tensions with Iran. Despite these challenges, the message persisted: to advocate for peace and rights in defiance of prevailing discord.

Il "Documento sulla fratellanza umana per la pace mondiale e la convivenza comune"-firmato nel 20... more Il "Documento sulla fratellanza umana per la pace mondiale e la convivenza comune"-firmato nel 2019 ad Abu Dhabi da papa Francesco e lo Shaykh di Al-Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyeb-re-sta un evento storico di portata mondiale. In quella occasione i due protagonisti discussero, fra l'altro, del progetto della Casa della famiglia di Abramo (Abrahamic Family House), edificio destinato ad accogliere una moschea, una chiesa e una sina-goga a una ventina di minuti dall'aeroporto di Abu Dhabi, in funzione del dialogo fra le tre fedi. Nonostante i proclami, non ci si può nascondere che per gli uomini e le donne del nostro tempo è diventato sempre più difficile riconoscersi come un'unica grande famiglia umana. In questo confronto a due voci, i due studiosi Adnane Mokra-ni e Brunetto Salvarani riflettono senza infingimenti, anche di fronte alle tensioni internazionali e ai conflitti in cui l'elemento etnico-religioso sembra esse-re tornato prepotentemente alla ribalta. Nessun documento può cambiare il mondo. La lettera non ci cambia, invece la parola che diventa vita ed etica trasforma e dà speranza per il cambiamento. Questo vale anche per il "Do-cumento sulla fratellanza umana" e per l'enciclica Fratelli tutti. Non è una dichiarazione scritta che cambia le cose, siamo noi che cambiamo la realtà, quando applichiamo i valori di quei testi nelle nostre vite. La vera domanda è: fino a che punto siamo seri nell'adottare quelle parole? Gli Autori Adnane Mokrani è stato il primo teologo musulmano a insegnare in una università ponti-ficia. È professore di studi islamici e di relazioni islamo-cristiane presso la Pontificia Università Gregoriana a Roma. Brunetto Salvarani, teologo e saggista, è considerato uno dei maggiori esperti di dialogo ecumenico e interreligioso. This groundbreaking book offers the first systematic study of the Qur'ān and Islamic history in t... more This groundbreaking book offers the first systematic study of the Qur'ān and Islamic history in the light of René Girard's mimetic theory. Girard did not deal deeply with Islam, offering only scattered hints in some interviews after the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Addressing this gap in Girardian studies, Adnane Mokrani aims to develop an Islamic theology that goes beyond just war theory to adopt a radical nonviolent approach. He analyzes the Qur'ānic text and classical and modern exegetical literature, focusing on the Qur'ānic narratives, then extends his research to the history of Islam, removing the sacred character attributed to some events and human choices in order to disarm theology and dismantle the ideologies of power. This same critique is also applied to the unprecedented levels of violence in modern and contemporary history. A radical and politically committed theology of peace is needed to recover the spiritual dimension of religion that frees people from the temptations of the individual and collective ego. It is a mystical and narrative theology in dialogue with other world theologies on the future of humanity-an urgent appeal needed now more than ever.

As Western democracies struggle to redefine constitutionally guaranteed rights to its minority po... more As Western democracies struggle to redefine constitutionally guaranteed rights to its minority populations, amidst populist politics, democratic and liberal constitutional orders are often seen to be struggling to justify the secular nature of their political and social identity. On the one hand, the Post-Arab Spring, combined with the disputed nature of political order in the Middle East, including the rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, proxy wars in the Arab World, and hostility and conflict amidst political and strategic confrontation has renewed calls for a just and peaceful order in the Islamic world. On the other hand, issues like pluralism, democracy, participation, inclusiveness, and rights, have emerged on the forefront and have triggered a need to revisit the debate on secularism. This paper deals with the challenges and current debate on the issue of secularism from the Western and non-Western milieu, and debate is raised on the context of societies driven by modernist and postmodernist trends. The liberal secular dimension is compared with the non-liberal secular understanding, and the historical context is explained with a literalist and comparative angle. A major point of reference that has played a central role in the debate on secularism is the overemphasis on state versus the church, with examples from Western history, while no such demarcation exists within Islam. Therefore, the term becomes controversial. From a religious perspective, there have been attempts that have not gone in good faith for the interpretation of the term. This paper makes a reference to the example of many Islamic countries where the term is wrongly contextualized, misunderstood, and misinterpreted.
