In contemporary press, news commentaries (xinwen pinglun) can be divided into two main sub-genres: commentary on current affairs (shiping) and editorial (shelun). While their structure and communicative purposes are similar, the main difference lies in the (in)visibility of the author. Shiping are signed by the commentator and include a brief profile to qualify them as an expert. Shelun are anonymous, since the opinions presented are the paper’s voice. Starting from the late 90s, as a consequence of the commercialisation of the sector and a growing demand for original views in the press, papers have increasingly relied on independent contributors (ziyou zhuangaoren) for commentaries on current affairs and editorials. Drawing on a series of interviews made to Chinese independent commentators between 2008 and 2015, this contribution aims to discuss the effects that the (in)visibility of the author has on the commentary’s authoritativeness and political influence, and the degree of independence with which opinions can be expressed, in a media environment that is still attentively controlled by the political authority.

Before and during the Forum, music videos were released online, promoting the benefits that the BRI would bring to the many populations involved, reproducing keywords from the institutional discourse on the initiative. Institutionally inspired music videos and cartoons have become growingly common in the Chinese cyberspace since 2013, with the aim to promote the CCP's political message among younger citizens. Drawing on the analysis of the videos released in relation to the Belt and Road Forum, the contribution discusses the role of such products in the popularisation of the CCP's political discourse towards national and international audiences.

When Chinese newspapers, which formerly survived thanks to state funds, had to adopt a business mindset, freelance writers became necessary to sustain these changes. They contributed in particular to the diffusion and standardization of the genre of the " commentary on current affairs " (shiping 时评), establishing themselves as new and original voices in a media system that is still tightly controlled. Building on an analysis of the linguistic features of a corpus of qualitative interviews conducted with Chinese freelance writers between 2008 and 2015, this paper studies their self-representation and understanding of their mission, discussing the extent to which they believe their independent opinions matter in the public arena, in a context that has been changing quickly, due to the decline of print media and due to a new political environment.

The current president of the People’s Republic of China and general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, has presented himself as the main sponsor for this reform, in a country where sport, since Mao Zedong’s era, has been highly political. Xi is also the promoter of the recent revival of propaganda posters in China’s public discourse, a tool which, after having been widely used in the Mao era, had lost much of its relevance in the public discourse after the 1970s. This paper discusses recurring keywords and concepts in the discursive representation of sport in the Mao era and under the current leadership. It is based on analysis of the slogans used in 25 propaganda posters on sport from 1950-1980s that were displayed at an exhibition in Sydney during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The Chinese media also paid attention to the event, and this study, based on analysis of a corpus of news commentaries published in the aftermath of the attack, highlights the discursive features of the positions on the Charlie Hebdo case of two Chinese language papers, the party-run Huanqiu Shibao and the market-oriented Xinjingbao. A qualitative and quantitative approach has been used to identify relevant themes and to measure the frequency of related terms. The research question is whether news commentaries expressed a plurality of views on a controversial subject such as freedom of speech in China. The results show that the case has generally been used to reinforce the official discourse on both terrorism and press freedom. However, while Huanqiu Shibao’s news commentaries failed to perform the genre’s purpose to voice independent opinions, some Xinjingbao’s articles were able to present original viewpoints. This can be considered a sign that some debate is possible in China even on highly controversial topics, and that the writers of commentaries, who often are freelancers, play a key role in widening the discussion in the country’s media sphere.

world, due to the size of capitals deployed by China’s companies as part of a systemic approach that has been strongly encouraged by the Chinese Communist Party. In 2011, Xi Jinping announced China’s ambition to become a football powerhouse in the future decades, and then portrayed this aspiration as part of the “Chinese dream”. In line with this goal, in 2015 the State Council published the Chinese Football Reform and Development Programme, which articulated the country’s strategy to become a “sport power” by promoting the development of the football industry. Building on content analysis of the document, this contribution discusses the characteristics of China's official discourse on the reform of football in China, showing the interaction between the economic and the political aims of the project.
