This paper tries to explore eventual gender gaps in the farms of Italy. Two variables are investigated: “Who” variable discriminate farm’s manager on the basis of gender under a constituent perspective of female entrepre-neurship. “Where” context is articulated in business, social and spatial context, with the aim of excavat-ing the multiple dimensions of farm entrepreneurship. In order to bring out the differences between male and female condominium farms in Italy, an econometric model was applied, with the aim of identifying context-related differences. The results confirm gender gaps related to farm performance, networking, diversification strategies and access to rural policies, by enlightening diverse paths of development in rural enterprises on the basis of explanatory variables. Research paper thumbnail of Sustainability integration in supply chain management through systematic literature review

Drafting a systematic literature review on sustainable integration of supply chain and logistics ... more Drafting a systematic literature review on sustainable integration of supply chain and logistics is the main aim of this research paper, given the current needs expressed by academics, managers, and investors. Business sustainability, among all management tasks, heavily depends on successful integration between supply chain and logistics. Scholarly and academic double-blinded peer-reviewed journals, indexed in Scopus and EBSCO, are considered, in a time range between the years 2010 and 2019. Thus, summaries of journals are comprehensively assessed to appraise the integration between Sustainable Supply Chain Management and logistics in business markets. Through this work paper, the procedures behind an effective application of supply chain models are investigated in order to improve knowledge, in terms of recent advancements. The authors develop and carry out an effective business-case analysis, in which the application of Supply Chain Management and logistics procedures led to advancements in the field, therefore their systematic review will be beneficial in terms of a comprehensive current framework provision. According to the analyze explored by the authors, Decision Support Systems and computer frameworks really support business leaders in using Sustainable Supply Chain Management and logistics information and models, further providing specific training. The research paper observed that, indeed, a systematic review is an effective tool that encourages a thorough understanding of the key features related to the specific field. Despite limitations due to a small number of studies carried out on the specific topic, we strongly believe that this research will provide a great contribution to business management, towards an exhaustive, useful, and insightful analysis of the current studies on the integration between Sustainable Supply Chain Management and logistics applications.

The extensive livestock system adopted for this breed allows the use of otherwise abandoned territories and a sustainable farming capable of ensuring high-quality levels. In addition, Cilentana goat farming represents an important source of income for the local communities and also preserves the territory itself guaranteeing the protection of biodiversity and the conservation of local activities that have a historical tradition. The aim of this study is twofold: give an overview of Cilentana breed morphological and productive traits linked to the historical and gastronomic tradition of the area and emphasize the economic role of this breed in the perspective of the ongoing new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) rules.

Based on a combination of detailed local weather data and of data on farms' yields, various possible weather indexes are found that are highly correlated with yields of the major crops in the area. Simulations show that hedging through such index based derivatives can be effective in protecting the stability of farms' incomes, at a cost that is likely to be much lower than that of the current system of subsidized crop insurance and ex-post compensation.

To this aim, a survey was carried out on Italian consumers in the Campania Region and data collected were analyzed both by simple descriptive statistics and by an econometric model. Our results highlight that young age, knowledge of milk properties, and a healthy lifestyle are extremely important components in determining a higher WTP.

More specifically, we consider the following strategies: participation in policy support programmes (i.e. rural development measures and agro‐environmental schemes), direct marketing (i.e. short‐chains, on‐farm businesses, agro‐tourism), on‐farm processing and being a member of a marketing and/or processing cooperative. We use data from the 2006 Italian FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network) related to 981 organic farmers. To estimate the factors affecting farmers’ strategies and to evaluate them simultaneously we implement a multivariate probit model (MVP). The results could be helpful to implement guidelines for public and private intervention in the next CAP programming period. Allowing for differences in farmers’ goals and their impact on the choice of farming method and strategies is important in a modern competitive scenario.

With this aim in mind, this study discusses first Mantegazza’s broader project on the physiology of emotions in order to explain in the second part the role of his contribution to the idea of love as the foundation of sexual medicine. Thus, love is an affection that loses its religious connotation in order to be studied like the other forces of nature according to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Furthermore, Mantegazza’s concept of love was not exclusively focused on the anatomical structure of internal and external genital organs, what we understood as sex, but it also included the psychological dimension of the individual, and thus it was understood as a matter of choice and taste, i.e. as sexuality. In this way, Mantegazza’...

Currently there is ample discussion among EU Institutions (European Commission, European Parliame... more Currently there is ample discussion among EU Institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, and Member States' governments) on the opportunity for setting up a comprehensive EU-wide framework on risk and crises in agriculture. In the meantime, within the limits of the WTO rules on agriculture, national governments are allowed to intervene through direct compensation to farmers in case of exceptional events that cause damages to farming operations and through subsidies to crop insurance programs. Such schemes are quite expensive for domestic budgets and some Member States are trying to switch some of their cost to the Community's budget, although an expansion of financial resources devoted to agriculture in Europe is rather unlikely. Moving from the recently emanated proposal of the European Commission, this paper discusses the main issues related to public intervention for risk and crises management in agriculture.

We employ a conceptual ecological-economic model to analyze the allocation of (endogenous) risk and ecosystem quality by risk averse ecosystem managers who have access to financial insurance, and study the implications for individually and socially optimal ecosystem management, and policy design. We show that while an improved access to financial insurance leads to lower ecosystem quality, the effect on the free-rider problem and on welfare is determined by ecosystem properties. We derive conditions on ecosystem functioning under which, if financial insurance becomes more accessible, (i) the extent of optimal regulation increases or decreases; and (ii) welfare, in the absence of environmental regulation, increases or decreases.

This is a partial change which may be an indicator of a greater capacity of the entrepreneurial fabric to come to the market and the ability to capitalise on the relationship between farm and territory. Comparison between the two periods observing the behaviour of common farmers confirmed the substantial stability of the reference framework and offered further scope for interpretation. First, only about 22% changed their strategic profile. Shifts between strategic profiles especially affected family-run farms and light weighted specialised farms (17%). In particular, there was a major shift from the family-run type to the small, specialised farm. By contrast, the shift from the area of specialisation to the family-run type was less marked, and mostly concerned farms situated...

It has been noticed that the active work of chefs through TV program, their importance in addressing global consumer culture and in disseminating attractive models for consumption behavior has developed in recent years. The paper underlines the role played from both media and celebrity chefs in influencing consumer behavior and transition in food habits. More precisely, by putting forward an empirical test, we try to emphasize the effectiveness of TV culinary programs in determining Veblen's processes of emulation and Bordieu's "distinct" food attitudes. In particular, by referring to Bordieu's concept of distinction, we investigate on processes of modification and transition in food habits. The results confirm relevant differences between consumers watching culinary programs and other consumers in performing different purchasing and consumer aptitudes.

Volatility of farm income represents a major challenge for farm management and the design of publ... more Volatility of farm income represents a major challenge for farm management and the design of public policies. This paper measures the extent to which risk management tools, especially direct payments and crop insurance, can significantly reduce crop income volatility in France and in Italy. We use an original dataset of 9,555 farms for the period 2003-2007 drawn up from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and three different econometric models to explain the volatility of crop income. The results are contrasted between the specialization of the farms and the two countries: Italian farms use management tools (CAP payments and crop insurance) so as to improve their income and to reduce its volatility (crop insurance, inputs). French farms use the same instruments to increase their income and therefore its volatility while they tend to substitute CAP payments to production. These results question the efficiency of structural policies aimed at stabilizing the farmers' income.

To this end, the proposal is an analysis of the reasons for choosing to consume this type of food or not, accompanied by a supplementary investigation, mostly to assess the relationship between consumption patterns and willingness to pay (WTP) for the most common categories of functional foods, such as milk fortified with CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Our research shows that a proportion of the population is unaware of the existence of functional foods and their properties. Moreover, it shows that when the concept of functional foods is explained to consumers, this creates a greater willingness to pay for such food, which is strongly linked to type of product carrier but not greatly to income. So the knowledge and transparency of information appear to be decisive variables in the process of choice, with significant implications in terms of policies for classification, l...

It uses a very rich farm level panel data from Italy. We have access to information regarding more than 8500 farms followed for 4 years and adopt a comprehensive estimating strategy that controls for the potential endogeneity of the insurance variable. The econometric results show that the insurance is positively correlated with welfare (captured by farm revenues). We also find that farms that have more crop diversification are more likely to adopt the insurance scheme. This may indicate that crop diversification may act as complement for financial insurance and not as substitute.

These neighbor countries are characterized by a changing insurance system from a public fund to private policies which are highly subsidized. Despite the stakes related to crop insurance-CAP reform, size of the market, implication of the governments-, few studies have been drawn on this topic. The literature in finance and in agricultural economics allows to build a two-stage empirical model which computes the elasticities of demand for crop insurance, and to define its key determinants. It appears that France and Italy present similar insurance systems in terms of products and of ability to indemnify. However, the farmers' sensitivity to insurance is most contrasted across the Alps. This leads to a discussion about the creation of an insurance market at the European scale.

In a scenario of widespread structural weakness in Italy's agricultural sector, we found a broad entrepreneurial area where farmers with a high risk of extinction work together with farmers who are able to allocate their family resources efficiently both within and outside their farms. In this context, it would be appropriate to implement a new framework of public intervention in the agricultural sector in Europe, which would consider the overall features belonging to the family's objective function in decision-making, such as the presence of work outside the farm. In Italy, the rationale of the farmers' decision-making process is chiefly consistent with the overall socioeconomic environment surrounding the family, as confirmed by our econometric analysis. Although the income level of the different types introduced in the analysis is positively affected by the presence of public support, total aid appears unable to provide a stimulus for farmers, generating considerable farm revenue dependent of offfarm income for their survival.

Research paper thumbnail of The Demand for Crop Insurance Combined Approaches for France and Italy
