These studies are important for setting the record straight. JGH was a precursor who first introduced the comparative, contextual and iconographic approaches in the study of Hebrew prophetic literature in light of the Mari documents that has now become standard procedure, fully adopted and followed by modern biblical scholars. The long Preface written by Manfred Weippert (" Vorwort " pp. xiii-xxv), duly points this out giving JGH credit for having forcefully and decisively called his attention to the importance of the Mari prophetic texts in respect to the Hebrew prophets at the Rome International Congress for OT Studies in 1968 (see infra, article n o 2). There, JGH presented Old Babylonian = (OB) Mari parallels on " Holy War " terminology that gave G. von Rad's well-known study 1 a radically new perspective. At that time, JGH in Europe together with Jack Sasson 2 in the USA were among the first scholars calling the community of researchers to the enormous comparative potential of Mari documents for OT prophetic literature. In the wake of this new, groundbreaking comparative-contrastive approach, M. Weippert himself produced in the following years a series of detailed studies on Assyrian and OT prophecies, now republished in his own volume of collected essays. 3 These two works, the one by Heintz on Old Babylonian Mari texts and OT prophets and the one by Weippert on Neo-Assyrian and Hebrew prophecies should be obligatory reading for any serious student of OT prophetic literature. They deserve to be translated into English for those who do not read French and German. In what follows I will point out some elements found in individual articles that could be further fruitfully researched and reinforced with additional comparative material culled from the rest of the ancient Near East. I will occasionally update the discussion quoting newer research that confirms the correctness of JGH's initial suggestions. Most of the Mari texts quoted in these studies can now be checked online and corrected when necessary owing to " Archibab " (http://www.archibab.fr/) dealing with the Old Babylonian archives from the 20 th to the 17 th centuries BCE. The site created and regularly updated by the Collège de France team of Assyriologists around Dominique Charpin and Jean-Marie Durand in Paris, provides most of the Mari texts in transliteration, translation with basic bibliography and study of key terms.

Consequently, there is a high potential for sperm competition in this group. Using comparative analyses, I examined the level of sperm competition in New Zealand geckos and how this has influenced the evolution of their reproductive morphology. Across lizards and snakes, there was more than a 40-fold variation in relative testis size. New Zealand geckos fell in the middle of this range and lacked sexual dimorphism in head size, suggesting that most species have polygynandrous mating systems. I confirmed this for one species, Hoplodactylus maculatus, which is gregarious, lacks territoriality and has a courtship pattern that suggests a high level of promiscuity for both sexes. I found that hemipenis size in New Zealand geckos was positively correlated with relative testis size, suggesting that sperm competition has resulted in the evolution of larger intromittent organs. However, the surface features of the hemipenis were relatively conservative across species. Although there was no relationship between sperm length or putative sperm storage site (SST) morphology and relative testis size, species with fewer SSTs, and thus more intense sperm competition, had longer sperm. H. maculatus males produced two types of sperm which differed not only in length but also in fertilising capacity, the short morph lacking DNA. This is the first known example of such sperm polymorphism in a vertebrate and may have evolved in response to sperm competition, the non-fertilising morph potentially helping to block the sperm of rival males or filling sperm storage sites. The motility of these short sperm was positively correlated with temperature; however, at higher temperatures motility declined with time, suggesting a trade-off between motility and longevity. Such temperature influences on male reproductive physiology have important implications for males of ectothermic species under sperm competition.

The result is eminently usable-and given the lamentable gaps in the documentation of such imperiled monuments, I hope other laborers in the Theban hills (if they cannot meet the very high standards set by publications of the German Institute or the Epigraphic Survey) will at least be emboldened to follow the example Manniche has set with this admirably sensible publication.
