This panel seeks to reassess the different paths in which empiricism developed during the Renaiss... more This panel seeks to reassess the different paths in which empiricism developed during the Renaissance. Recent historiographical interpretations have suggested the importance of moving away from the traditional ideas about its possible British origins and its subsequent transformation into a national philosophical current. Instead, it has been shown that the Spanish imperial project contributed to the development of Western science through a strong promotion and dissemination of new knowledge, and by a pioneering State sponsorship of scientific culture, particularly under Philip II. This redefinition of empiricism in the early modern period will be placed in the context of a profoundly renewed reflection on the concept of scientia, at the intersection between history of knowledge and intellectual history. The extent in which empiricist philosophical thought differed from other doctrines by seeking alternatives to Aristotelian natural philosophy will be explored, as well as its possible connections to the rise of philosophical eclecticism. The diversity of experiences created the circulation of knowledge in an increasingly connected and globalised world will also be discussed. These objectives are in line with recent research that has attempted to "de-Europeanize" the conception of science at the dawn of the Scientific Revolution. In all, these perspectives will add to the discussion about the rise of empiricism in the specific context of a reform of natural philosophy during the Renaissance. The following issues will also be explored: Empiricism as the founding element of a questioning of rationality. Natural philosophy and the emergence of new forms of rationality. The limits of empiricism as a systemic approach to the natural world. Does empiricism respond to a desire for reform? Empiricism and collaborative knowledge Empiricism and Skeptical currents of thought Empirical practices and its books The political dimension of empiricism and its relevance to imperial projects. This edition (1707) is the last perfect example of a well-established relationship between wit and scandal, Spanish literature and libertine imagination in the scope of English literature during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This discussion will contribute to the panel by considering scandal as a notion pervaded by a historical context of hostility and rivalry—scandal as evil arising from the otherness.

Research paper thumbnail of Castigare Pliny : The Concept of Error and the Renewal of Natural Philosophy in the XVIth-Century. Spanish Scientific Thought Reconsidered.

Scientiae. Disciplines of Knowing in the Early Modern World, Annual Conference, Belfast, 12-15 juin 2019, 2019

The purpose of this study is to reflect on the intersection of science, philology and philosophy ... more The purpose of this study is to reflect on the intersection of science, philology and philosophy in Spanish early modern intellectual history through the debates on the concept of error in Pliny's Historia Naturalis. In Spanish Golden Age philosophy, the discussions on the work of Pliny became not only a field of literary criticism, but also a science of discovering errors in corrupted and mutilated ancient texts. The princeps edition, published in 1469 Venice, by Johannes de Spira, became the starting point for various erudite debates among scholars from different parts of Europe. Since the late XVth century, the confrontation between classic philology and scientific (especially medical) inquiry spread from Italy to the most important intellectual centres of Europe, decisively influencing the development of scientific Humanism in Spain. It has been recently argued that the concept of error began to define the academic self in the transition from Medieval to Reinaissance erudite culture, becoming both a public performance and a definition of the intellectual identity of the humanist. In Golden Age Spain, the scholarly debates around the work of Pliny contributed to the formation of a Republic of Letters and a specific intellectual community comprising scholars from various universities an intellectual centres. This study aims to demonstrate to what extent the erudite practice of debunking errors could determine the renovation of scientific methods. It also aims to understand to what extent errors in terminology affected the different manners in which Pliny's thought was understood. This will allow us to explore the limits of the concept of error, understood from a philological perspective, through the religious and philosophical ambivalence towards the presence of Pliny among impious authors now considered as precursors of modern atheism, such as Epicurus and Lucretius. In this sense, the present study deals with the wider question of the perceived transformation of ancient sages into impious pagans, who defended dubious doctrines.

Research paper thumbnail of Visions of a Perfect World : Utopia, Fiction and Reason in Early Modern Spanish Philosophy , Renaissance Society of America, Chicago, 2017 , panel "The Impact of fiction in Early Modern Philosophy" (organizer: Jorge Ledo)

The aim of this paper is to understand the relationship between imagination and rationalism in Sp... more The aim of this paper is to understand the relationship between imagination and rationalism in Spanish Golden Age culture, through the study of passages dealing with Utopia present in several philosophical texts. Disruptions and discontinuities in the search of Truth, as well as new methods to demonstrate the power of human reason, defined to a large extent the endeavors of Spanish Renaissance philosophy. Various methods to reform traditional philosophical discourse, such as the practice of questioning, the use of dialogue, or the paradox based on dream fiction, characterized this variant of early modern rationality. The main question is: to what extent the utopic imagination of a perfect world was a way to experience the validity of the philosophical concepts? The conception of rationality revealed by this alternative brought together the rise of scientific purpose. In a contrary depiction of reality, the allegorical exploration of an imperfect world allowed to present philosophical ideas in the fictional prose of the Spanish Renaissance.

Research paper thumbnail of « Divine Providence Contested : The Debate about Epicurus in the Spanish Renaissance », Sixteenth Century Society & Conference, Bruges,18-20 August 2016

This paper aims to explore the references made to the Epicurean doctrine in treatises on Divine P... more This paper aims to explore the references made to the Epicurean doctrine in treatises on Divine Providence, either to defend or deny this fundamental precept of Catholicism. The representation of Providence frequently revealed a certain ambiguity which, in some cases, amounted to a dialogue with Epicurean denial of the influence of God. To what extent this heterodox thesis revealed a tension which could have determined an anti-Epicurean position? The heterodox thesis allows us to approach both Epicureanism and anti-Epicureanism in close connection to Renaissance philosophy. In this context, it is important to consider some intellectual and scientific discontinuities in the tradition of faith in Divine Providence, like the rise of a new empiricism during the sixteenth century, and the reflection on the meaning of corporeal suffering, moral affliction, and their spiritual profit. The treatise of the Spanish Stoic writer Francisco de Quevedo, Providencia de Dios (1641) will be a main reference to illustrate the ambiguity of the philosophical and moral perspective on the power of God in the natural world which, in turn, raised the question of the misery of human condition. Dissent concerning the doctrine of immortality of the soul and the indifference of God towards human affairs were some of the most debated arguments of Epicureanism during the Renaissance. An early tradition set the defence of Divine Providence following the teaching of Aquinas. In Spain God's control over the world justified political and theological theories. The strong Messianic message defended by the Spanish monarchy contradicted the Chance and Fortune as factors that governed human affairs. In moral philosophy, however, the treatises of Seneca and the importance of the Ciceronian skeptic dialogue De Natura deorum provided another approach in some extent at odds with the political tradition.

In the light of the recent commemoration of such major European divisions as the Lutheran Reforma... more In the light of the recent commemoration of such major European divisions as the Lutheran Reformation (1517) or the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the modern era is often construed as a painful stage in the construction of our modernity. Such emphasis on religious strife and international divisions has often discouraged scholars from investigating the opposite trend towards conciliation and the institution of concord as well as its various expressions. Studying the role of the arts in peace negotiations has recently uncovered women's participation in diplomacy and conflict resolution through cultural policy (e.g. in Sweden, Spain, England and the Netherlands). Moreover, the circulation of knowledge which contributed to the shaping of a "Republic of Letters" whose cohesiveness, despite its tensions, has been described in various studies dedicated to the emergence of scholarly networks. Lastly, the increase in intellectual as well as social exchanges resulting from the custom of peregrinationes academicae, either to major European universities, or to places where scholars hoped to find patrons who who secured them jobs or pensions, played a decisive role in bringing closer the political and diplomatic agendas of the various nations. Such trend, inherited from the Middle Ages, was given new impetus in the early modern age.

This notion will be contextualized by studying the duality between unity and diversity in the experience of the Hispanic Monarchy, especially in the colonial Atlantic world. The encounter with the New World will be analysed as a major factor in the development of cultural diversity. Also, the impact of hybridity in the discourses about the Natural History of the Indies, and the influence of the marvels of the New World, will be read as important factors on the renewal of Hispanic political culture. The outcome of these cultural encounters will allow to suggest the implications of cultural diversity in the realm of religion and belief. Their impact transcended the conflicts generated by the spiritual conquest of the Indies, and led to the growth of scepticism and the birth of new forms of tolerance.

It also aims to trace its influence on Spanish Golden Age Literature, particularly in theoretical works which became a decisive step in the development of the concept of pleasure as an integral aspect of the poetical representation of human nature. Special attention is given to the representation of tragical pleasure. In which manner cruelty can be equated to delight? A profund tension reveals itself in the Baroque representation of pleasure, as a sophisticated mechanism designed to conceal uncomfortable truths and bitter disappointments.

It aims to understand, through the detailed study of several heterodox and erudite XVIIth century Spanish literary works, the gradual construction of a system of knowledge based on precise philosophical argumentation, empiricist thinking, and critical rationality, which led to a direct refutation of established intellectual dogma. The search for intellectual Truth and the confrontation with Catholic faith created a strongly innovative impulse within the sciences, and generated a specifically-Spanish type of Humanism with a distinctively Heterodox message. This implied a critique to vulgar credulity, an explicit fascination with "the machinery of the world", and a scientific approach towards the understanding of Nature. Special emphasis will be placed in the
scientific and philosophical context in which these intellectual phenomena took place, in order to understand if determined discourses and lines of thought derived from Natural Philosophy were understood as potential bearers of Heterodox ideas. In the same manner, the potential connection between different (and geographically separated) centres where scientific knowledge was produced will be analysed, in order to understand if the examples studied were merely isolated cases, or part of a wider, international network of thinkers located on the periphery of the Spanish Empire. Also, special attention will be paid to the growing presence of Mathematics in philosophical discourses, an element that might demonstrate the emergence of a new cultural paradigm which tended to limit the moral aspect of Spanish Golden Age cosmography. This might be seen as a step towards a new conception of the political use of scientific knowledge, based entirely on the new concept of practical efficiency.

The subject of this paper is the rehabilitation of Epicurus and Epicurean thought in Spanish Gold... more The subject of this paper is the rehabilitation of Epicurus and Epicurean thought in Spanish Golden Age culture. From the sixteenth century to the Baroque era, a diaspora of Spanish heterodox thinkers led to a more liberal reading of the philosophy of Epicurus -a process that also affected the reception of Plinius. In order to spread its message, Spanish Neo-Epicureanism resorted to a complex and erudite use of Ancient sources and subtle forms of literary expression, avoiding official censorship by adopting a variety of forms. Thus, from its epicenter in Spanish Italy, Neo-Epicureanism spread into Europe, influencing not only high culture, but popular culture as well. The paper will focus not only on the most important authors who spread this doctrine, but also on specific personalities who were receptive to it. Finally, it will demonstrate how Neo-Epicureanism -one of the most controversial doctrines of Antiquity- influenced the complex relation between Spanish Golden Age philosophy and the contemporary "Scientific Revolution", a new form of rationality based on the radical separation of the Human from the Divine.

This article proposes a reflection on the philosophical culture of Re- naissance jurisprudence, based on a comparison between the concept of divine providence in Hugo Grotius’s De veritate religionis christianae, and Francisco de Quevedo’s Providencia de Dios, both published practically at the same time. The symmetry between both texts allows to discuss the existence of shared concepts in the divergent worldviews and ideologies of Catholic Spain and the Protestant Netherlands. This points out the connections within a Republic of Letters much wider than the political and religious conflicts of the age.
Keywords. Divine providence; Divine justice; Republic of Letters; Neo-Stoicism; Religious debate.
