Research paper thumbnail of Contribution of Thermal Neutrons to Soft Error Rate

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science

Based on experiments at ILL facility, the thermal neutron contribution of 3 devices (one SRAM, one FPGA and one microprocessor) is investigated for both ground level and aircraft environments. We conclude that the thermal neutron induced SEUs could have a similar contribution to soft error rate than the high-energy part in atmospheric applications.

By using advanced material characterization techniques, each recovered object is able to relate it’s own story, thus giving historians a more complete view of the events which took place more than 200 years ago. The INSTITUT LAUE LANGEVIN (ILL) is starting a collaboration with the INSTITUTE OF HISTORY (IH) of the BELARUS ACADEMY OF SCIENCE associated to the CENTRE D’ETUDES NAPOLEONIENNES (CEN) for a series of experiments using non-destructive neutron diffraction techniques.

Research paper thumbnail of Why neutron guides may end up breaking down? Some results on the macroscopic behaviour of alkali-borosilicate glass support plates under neutron irradiation

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms

Such devices are widely used to deliver thermal and cold neutron beams to experimental lines in most large neutron research facilities. We present results on macroscopic properties of samples of guide glass substrates which are subjected to neutron irradiation at relatively large fluences. The results show a striking dependence of some of the macroscopic properties such as density, shape or surface curvature upon the specific chemical composition of a given glass. The relevance of the present findings for the installation of either replacement guides at the existing facilities or for the deployment of instruments for ongoing projects such as the European Spallation Source is briefly discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Large-Scale Facilities for R&D on micro- and nanotechnologies: Neutrons and synchrotron X-rays for advanced electronics characterisation

2012 International Semiconductor Conference Dresden-Grenoble (ISCDG), 2012

However, the access to large-scale facilities permitting this unique advanced characterisation is well known to be challenging and is generally incompatible with industrial project management. The French “Investissements d'Avenir” programme is funding an important programme based in Grenoble, France on nanoelectronic technological research. The technology programme covers in particular 3D integration, silicon photonics and distributed network technologies, supported by technological infrastructure including a Characterisation Platform. This platform will aim to enhance the effectiveness of the Grenoble-based neutron and synchrotron light source facilities for European micro and nano-technological research.
