This paper explores the area of applying visual analytics to represent data and underlying relationships in social networks-more specifically, on the Twitter micro-blogging service. Networks of this kind can be treated as graphs, where each node corresponds to a user or a specific piece of information and edges connect such nodes representing relationships. Visualizing graphs is a vast research area in its own right, with numerous applications in science and engineering. In this assignment we are using readily-available software to visualize parts of the network, via filtering or other operations, in order to be able to draw conclusions. Social networks are an excellent candidate to apply visual analytics to, due to their exponential growth when new users join.

High-resolution images of 1,631 nuclei from 32 cases of mesothelioma and 742 nuclei from 15 cases of ovarian adenocarcinoma were recorded. A stepwise discriminant analysis and nonparametric classifier were applied. Nuclei from these two diagnostic categories appear very similar and occupy feature space with significant overlap. A nonparametric classification procedure provided acceptable correct classification. For certain regions in feature space, cases could be unequivocally classified.

High-resolution images of 2,100 nuclei from 27 cases of epithelial mesothelioma and 15 cases of adenocarcinoma of the lung were recorded. Stepwise discriminant analysis and a nonparametric classifier were applied to derive estimates for a case diagnosis correct classification rate. Nuclei from epithelial mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma of the lung showed statistically significantly different properties, but there was a region of overlap in feature space such that approximately 15-20% of cases could not be correctly classified. The lesion signatures derived from the mesothelioma cases with discriminant function scores that might result in case misclassification and the cases of adenocarcinoma of the lung spanned a similar range of degree of nuclear abnormality. However, the distribution of nuclear abnormality values f...
The synthesis of the three-dimensional morphology of a building is one of the most important task... more The synthesis of the three-dimensional morphology of a building is one of the most important tasks in architecture. Space planning and morphology are of the most interesting and complex of architectural design problems. Architectural design is guided by the constraints on the spatial composition and the morphology of the final building. During the conceptual phase problems are characterised by fuzziness and complexity. Building requirements are ill-defined and contradictory. The designer should explore the solution space for alternative building solutions while refining requirements and style preferences. In this paper we present the development and implementation of an Evolutionary Declarative Design system prototype for the aid of conceptual style design of buildings. The system is a specific MultiCAD prototype system including architectural knowledge, architectural style and a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Two design cases are presented for two different architectural styles. The applicability and efficiency of the system prototype are discussed.

In order to assist decision makers and examine the impact of the activities and the interactions of Higher Educational Institutions on the domains of which academia is consisted, multivariate rankings are utilized. Rankings can be used as a measure of the development of an academic unit in time and in relation to other academic units, as well as a guide for the strategic planning. Although, multifaceted information gives a clearer interpretation of the status of academic units and contributes to their development, it perplexes the decision making process by increasing its complexity. The paper describes a ranking methodology that considers the multidimensionality of academia, so as to offer a detailed comparison and assessment of educational institutions, but also alleviates the intricacy of multifaceted data by introducing semantic web technologies and visual analytics to...

In order to address stakeholders’ needs and to assist the institutional accountability, this complexity should be considered during the development of academic services. We have designed a dynamic multidimensional ranking approach, easily modifiable to address user requirements, so as to assess and compare the university performance with a clear view to the support of effective institutional strategic planning and policy making. Our approach comprises the following components: the AcademIS ontology to model the academic domain and its multiple dimensions, the AcademIS Information System to manage and display the academic information, published in Linked Open Data format and the visual-aided Multiple Criteria Decision Making component, to evaluate and rank the performance of the academic units. The data are aggregated from several sources, in different formats, LODif...

In this chapter, an improvement and three applications of viewpoint complexity will be presented. The proposed improvement ads lighting to viewpoint quality criteria. The three applications are image-based modeling, ray-tracing and molecular rendering, where the use of viewpoint complexity highly improves obtained results.

Exploration is made by a virtual camera and is based on visual as well as scene covering criteria. The used techniques may be global, if the camera remains outside the explored virtual world, or local, if the camera moves inside the virtual world. Online and offline exploration methods are also presented.

Its fundamental functionality comprises the submission of the geometric representation of a building as a query sample, subsequently encoded and employed by a classifying mechanism in order to discover similar occurrences within a pre-processed GIS-based building database. The encoding of both the query sample and the existing building database relies on n-grams whereas the classification and identification scheme combines k-means and a set of global and local features for the construction of similarity classes.

The proposed semantic model adopts a series of qualitative and quantitative criteria for the acquisition and exploitation of buildings related knowledge. The model is subsequently encoded and integrated in an environment for accessing georeferenced 3D urban virtual content. This enhancement allows for improved search, routing and navigation capabilities, while it offers the potential of a semantic decision-support system with pragmatic knowledge-based functionality in a realistic operating environment.

The system was implemented using the INSIGHT II+ EXPERT System Shell and runs on IBM compatible microcomputers. It operates using knowledge acquired through the literature, research and experience, formulated into a total of 195 IF-THEN rules. The WHO International Histological Classification of Tumours is being used throughout. The system can quickly focus on a differential problem, thereby reducing the time necessary to reach a conclusion. It has been tested on a set of 34 cases, previously examined by pathologists of the Metaxas Memorial Cancer Institute, and has been found to reach good agreement with the pathologists' diagnoses.

The particular characteristics of the datasets, their irregularity in terms of class representation, volume, availability as well as user induced inconsistency further impede the learning potential of any employed mechanism, thus leading to the need for adaptation and adoption of custom approaches, expected to address these issues. In the current work we present the problems encountered in the effort to acquire and apply user profiles in such an environment, the modified boosting learning algorithm adopted and the corresponding experimental results.

Building modeling deals with the complexity of the early phase of architectural design. During that phase, architects use visual and verbal descriptions in order to express their ideas. A declarative process could capture the nature of the early phase of architectural design. The motivation of this work was to combine the representation of information as it is used in declarative scene modeling and architectural conceptual design. We propose a Declarative Knowledge Framework for Architecture-oriented Building Modeling (DKABM) to incorporate the conceptual design of scenes with domain-specific knowledge. We illustrate how this framework is adapted in MultiCAD, an information system based on declarative modeling. We result the declarative representation of scene with architectural concepts and rules through the DKABM, called Normalized Declarative Building Model (NDBM). A specific kind of building has been used to test the integration capability of the implemented framework.
