unnaturalpagans - Profile (original) (raw)
on 3 May 2006 (#10162677)
unnaturalpagans is a community for people who follow a Pagan path, but don't believe that Earth/Gaia-worship is a necessary part of Paganism.
The goal of the community is to provide support, advice, and information for urban Pagans that is often severely lacking in traditional Pagan communities and groups, who are largely focussed on reintroducing 'country' elements into city life. While acknowledging that there's nothing wrong with Earth/Gaia-worship, this community is for people who don't feel that it's a necessary part of their religious and spiritual beliefs and practices and want to discuss the realities of modern urban Paganism without being told to get a window box or grow a herb garden.
This community is not about bashing people who do use a connection to 'nature' as part of their beliefs - and such people should really feel welcome in the community, as long as they keep in mind the focus of unnaturalpagans. There's plenty of Pagans who live in cities and might want to discuss better ways to integrate city life into their practices, even if they do like to grow a herb garden in their window box.
Rules
There's two main rules:
- Don't be a bloody idiot.
- Don't be an obnoxious arsehole.
There are pretty simple rules, but I know what people can be like so I'll elaborate a little.
Don't be a bloody idiot means think before you post or comment. Read over what you've just typed, and what you're replying to, and make sure that you've not misunderstood something and that what you're saying makes sense. Think about if it's an appropriate post for the community. (Off-topic posts will just be deleted, and repeat offenders banned. See below for what's considered on/off-topic.) When replying to people engage your brain and think for yourself. If you start or participate in a discussion be prepared to explain yourself, provide supporting evidence, and just generally engage in rational discussion with other adult humans. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time - owning up to yours makes it just a mistake and not you being an idiot. Not being able to tell the difference between someone attacking your position and attacking you makes you an idiot.
Don't be an obnoxious arsehole means not snarking for its own sake; not sniping at people; and not engaging in flame-wars. (Take it elsewhere if you like - if it's not in unnaturalpagans, we don't care.) Don't play at being 'nice police' and get offended on behalf of other people. If anyone has a problem with anything in the community they can contact the moderators - they don't need you to defend them. Attacking someone personally rather than attacking their position in a debate makes you an arsehole. Being unable to take fair criticism makes you an arsehole (the community doesn't exist just to validate your ideas, don't post things here if you don't want feedback and discussion).
Off-topic posts
This community is about urban Paganism, so posts should reflect that.
Posts about urban issues are fine, as long as there's a direct link to Paganism.
Posts about general Paganism are fine as long as there's a direct link to city life.
Posts about environmental activism are not fine.
Posts about 'getting in touch with nature', no matter how it's phrased are not fine.
Posts about the community itself are fine - although we'd rather than you raise any issues by contacting the maintainers first.
Posts that have been cross-posted to every other pagan community on LiveJournal without any attempt to customise for the specific needs of each community are NOT fine and will be deleted.
Posts whining about off-topic (or other) posts being deleted, or other maintainer decisions, will be mocked and then deleted.
Adverts need to be cleared by a maintainer first - just send us an email.
Comments on posts are obviously not covered by this - discussion threads are free to go in whatever direction people take them.
