Black rice is a type of pigmented rice with black bran covering the endosperm of the rice kernel.... more Black rice is a type of pigmented rice with black bran covering the endosperm of the rice kernel. The main objective of the present study was to provide details information on the proximate composition of third generation of gamma irradiated black rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Cempo ireng). In respect to the control, generally speaking, there were no significant changes of moisture, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and fibers contents have been observed for the both gamma irradiated black rice. However, the 200-BR has slightly better nutritional value than that of 300-BR and the control. The mineral contents of 200-BR increased significantly of about 35% than the non-gamma irradiated black rice.

Green synthesis of diethyl ethane-1,2-diyldicarbamate (M1) as starting dimer of free-isocyanate p... more Green synthesis of diethyl ethane-1,2-diyldicarbamate (M1) as starting dimer of free-isocyanate polyurethane from an excess of diethyl carbonate and ethylene diamine catalyzed by TBD (1,5,7-triazabicyclo-[4,4,0]dec-5-ene) at 80 °C for 4 hours has been carried out. The product has high yield and purity up to 92% and 99,18%, respectively. The product was obtained in the form of rod-shaped white crystals and characterized with 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Polyurethane (P1) has successfully synthesized via polycondensation methods by reacting of M1 with cis-2-butene-1,4-diol. This reaction also catalyzed by TBD organo catalyst. P1 chemical structure has been confirmed using 1H-NMR and FTIR techniques.

Biopolymer chitosan/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites have been successfully pr... more Biopolymer chitosan/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites have been successfully prepared by a simple solution-evaporation method. The morphology and mechanical properties of the chitosan/MWNTs nanocomposites have been characterized with field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), bright field transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), and tensile as well as nanoindentation tests. The MWNTs were observed to be homogeneously dispersed throughout the chitosan matrix. When compared with neat chitosan, the mechanical properties, including the tensile modulus and strength, of the nanocomposites are greatly improved by about 93% and 99%, respectively, with incorporation of only 0.8 wt % of MWNTs into the chitosan matrix.

Abstract In this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) waste has been successfully utilized a... more Abstract In this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) waste has been successfully utilized and chemically pretreated as a powerful adsorbent for removing anionic and cationic dyes in aqueous media. The extracted- and silylated-OPEFB, denoted as tOPEFB and s-OPEFB respectively, were prepared and morphologically, chemically and physically characterized using TEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, and TGA. The tOPEFB was contained α-cellulose confirmed by FTIR and XRD. This material has good adsorption toward methylene blue, having adsorption capacity (Qm) of 192.31 mg g−1, but it was weak to adsorb procion red dye (Qm = 20.70 mg g−1). Surface modification of tOPEFB not only provided a new amine functional group as indicated by FTIR analysis, but also improved the BET surface area of material up to 30.53%. As results, a high Qm of s-OPEFB was achieved toward procion red (Qm = 208.33 mg g−1) and methylene blue (Qm = 149.25 mg g−1). It confirmed that the surface engineering by silylation approach offered a positive impact on material properties, which directly improved their adsorption performance toward both anionic and cationic dyes.

Teknologi pelapis tradisional yang menggunakan poliuretan menuai perhatian serius, karena penggunaan senyawa isosianat (-N=C=O) yang beracun sebagai bahan pembuatan poliuretan sudah dipandang merugikan bagi kesehatan dan lingkungan karena dapat menyebabkan iritasi dan asma jangka panjang (Figovsky et al., 2005; David et al., 1969). Studi tentang pengaruh penambahan limbah karet alam (recycled natural rubber, rNR) terhadap elast... more Studi tentang pengaruh penambahan limbah karet alam (recycled natural rubber, rNR) terhadap elastisitas, kekuatan bending dan ketahanan nyala komposit limbah polipropilena (rPP) dengan pengisi serat karbon (CF) dan lempung montmorillonite (MMt) telah dilakukan. Metode pembuatan komposit dilakukan dengan proses larutan secara reaktif menggunakan benzoil peroksida (BPO) sebagai inisiator, divinil benzena (DVB) sebagai senyawa ikat silang dan senyawa penggandeng polipropilena tercangkok asam akrilat (PP-g-AA). Komposit yang dibuat pada penelitian ini adalah komposit rPP/rNR/DVB/PP-g-AA/CF/MMt dengan variasi konsentrasi rNR adalah 0, 1, 3, 5 dan 7%. Membran hibrida dengan variasi konsentrasi BNT dipreparasi menggunakan metode inversi fasa. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), dan Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) digunakan untuk mengkarakterisasi membran hibrida. Data menunjukkan bahwa membran hibrida tersusun atas fasa α dan β dari struktur polimof PVDF yang terkonfirmasi oleh analisis ATR-FTIR dan XRD. Kajian struktur dan degradasi termal pada membran hibrida poliviniliden fluorida (PVDF)/lempung b... more Kajian struktur dan degradasi termal pada membran hibrida poliviniliden fluorida (PVDF)/lempung bentonit (BNT) telah dilakukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh penambahan BNT terhadap pembentukan fasa PVDF dan sifat termalnya. Membran hibrida PVDF/lempung BNT dibuat dengan metode inversi fasa. Membran yang dihasilkan dikarakterisasi dengan attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), dan differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan membran PVDF/BNT memiliki struktur polimorf PVDF fasa α dan β yang terkonfirmasi dari data FTIR dan XRD. Data DSC menunjukkan penurunan nilai titik leleh (Tm) dengan penambahan BNT, dan dengan rentang suhu pelelehan yang lebih kecil. Kristalisasi PVDF terjadi secara isothermal dan adanya BNT menghasilkan titik kristalisasi (Tc) pada suhu yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan membran PVDF murni. However, the presence of poorly industries waste disposal system has negative impact to the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to overcome this problem with low-cost technology, called adsorption. In this research, silylated-montmorillonite (sMMt) has been successfully prepared as supporting material for adsorption of methylene blue by chitosan. The sMMt was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and elemental mapping techniques. The chitosan/sMMt composites were prepared through dissolution-precipitation method and produced rod-like morphology as observed by SEM. The adsorption process was carried out in a batch method by studying the pH and the adsorption contact time. Nowadays, black rice is gaining consumer interest because of its health benefit. Due to the high ... more Nowadays, black rice is gaining consumer interest because of its health benefit. Due to the high content of antioxidant compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids, the nutritional profile of black rice is much better than any other rice varieties. Anthocyanins, pigment with powerful antioxidant properties, give a vibrant color to the rice. The antioxidant activity and chemical constituents of the non-irradiated and gamma-irradiated black rice Oryza sativa L. var Cempo Ireng were investigated. The total phenolic content was determined based on the reaction of the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent with samples. Total anthocyanin was determined by the pH differential method. Antioxidant activity was fulfilled using DPPH method. The results revealed that non-irradiated and gamma-irradiated black rice were categorized as potent antioxidants. It is noted that irradiation increased antioxidant activity and changed the chemical components of black rice. Both of non-irradiated and irradiated black rice contains simple phenolics and flavonoids, including anthocyanins. Non-irradiated and irradiated black rice possess similar types of secondary metabolites, with different chemical content. The non-irradiated black rice contains anthocyanins of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, whereas the irradiated black rice possesses anthocyanin of peonidin-3-O-glucoside. Additionally, irradiated black rice contains terpenoids, which increased its antioxidant activity compared to the control.

Kajian struktur dan degradasi termal pada membran hibrida poliviniliden fluorida (PVDF)/lempung b... more Kajian struktur dan degradasi termal pada membran hibrida poliviniliden fluorida (PVDF)/lempung bentonit (BNT) telah dilakukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh penambahan BNT terhadap pembentukan fasa PVDF dan sifat termalnya. Membran hibrida PVDF/lempung BNT dibuat dengan metode inversi fasa. Membran yang dihasilkan dikarakterisasi dengan attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), dan differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan membran PVDF/BNT memiliki struktur polimorf PVDF fasa α dan β yang terkonfirmasi dari data FTIR dan XRD. Data DSC menunjukkan penurunan nilai titik leleh (Tm) dengan penambahan BNT, dan dengan rentang suhu pelelehan yang lebih kecil. Kristalisasi PVDF terjadi secara isothermal dan adanya BNT menghasilkan titik kristalisasi (Tc) pada suhu yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan membran PVDF murni. However, the presence of poorly industries waste disposal system has negative impact to the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to overcome this problem with low-cost technology, called adsorption. In this research, silylated-montmorillonite (sMMt) has been successfully prepared as supporting material for adsorption of methylene blue by chitosan. The sMMt was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and elemental mapping techniques. The chitosan/sMMt composites were prepared through dissolution-precipitation method and produced rod-like morphology as observed by SEM. The adsorption process was carried out in a batch method by studying the pH and the adsorption contact time. Due to the high content of antioxidant compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids, the nutritional profile of black rice is much better than any other rice varieties. Anthocyanins, pigment with powerful antioxidant properties, give a vibrant color to the rice. The antioxidant activity and chemical constituents of the non-irradiated and gamma-irradiated black rice Oryza sativa L. var Cempo Ireng were investigated. The total phenolic content was determined based on the reaction of the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent with samples. Total anthocyanin was determined by the pH differential method. Antioxidant activity was fulfilled using DPPH method. The results revealed that non-irradiated and gamma-irradiated black rice were categorized as potent antioxidants. It is noted that irradiation increased antioxidant activity and changed the chemical components of black rice. Both of non-irradiated and irradiated black rice contains simple phenolics and flavonoids, including anthocyanins. Non-irradiated and irradiated black rice possess similar types of secondary metabolites, with different chemical content. The non-irradiated black rice contains anthocyanins of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, whereas the irradiated black rice possesses anthocyanin of peonidin-3-O-glucoside. Additionally, irradiated black rice contains terpenoids, which increased its antioxidant activity compared to the control.
