However, all the contributors overcame these problems by writing articles containing some new information, topics and interpretations of sigillographic data. The main part of the volume include themes presented at the 12th International Symposium of Byzantine Sigillography (St Petersburg, 28-30 May 2019), especially material from excavations or seal collections. In addition, the volume also hosts articles promoting our knowledge concerning the administration, prosopography, history and iconography of Byzantium. During the preparation of this volume, our dear colleague Prof. Dr Ivan Jordanov sadely passed away. Professor Jordanov has offered remarkable editions of Byzantine seals found in Bulgaria; he has always been present at our International Symposia and his death is a loss for the Byzantine Studies. For these reason this volume is dedicated to his memory.

That can't be said about the Byzantine hagiography though, for which the opinions are highly divided. In comparison to the rest of the Byzantine literature, hagiography offers a vast amount of information (certainly vaster than other sources) which in turn contributes to the understanding of what we call realia.

The scientific focus of the Symposium was the combination and the common ground between Sigillography and Archaeology. Experts from around the world and many archaeologists with fascinating sigillographical findings responded to this call. The papers have a synthetic nature dealing with the byzantine lead seals as a historical source and their significance for the history of the byzantine civil and military administration, the relations with the West, the history of Art and the byzantine prosopography. Some papers also present new unpublished findings from excavations in Turkey and Greece and from the Collection in the Ermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), which is the second biggest collection of byzantine seals all over the world.

With English translations of Introduction and Conclusions.
