The flexibility of the online learning mode enables learners to prepare themselves to develop confidence and to learn with greater independence. This paper reports the findings of a study on the teaching and learning and technology factors of online English language courses at UNITaR (University Tun Abdul Razak), a virtual university in Malaysia. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed in eliciting data via a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. Specifically, the paper reports on learners’ perceptions towards the teaching and learning as well as technology factors during the online English course they were engaged in. The findings with regard to the perceptions of the learners brought more new perspectives which could be incorporated or taken into consideration for an onli...

The framework adopted for this study is the Failed Functional Features Hypothesis (Hawkins and Chan, 1997). This hypothesis claims that post-childhood L2 learners experience syntactic deficits in the L2 if specific parameterized features present in the functional categories of the L2 are not specified in the L1. However, certain L1 features that correspond to L2 settings can enter L2 syntactic derivations. The study is interesting because the surface structure of English is unlike both Chinese and Malay and the underlying representation of English is like Malay but not Chinese. 103 L1 Malay speakers and 104 L1 Chinese speakers of L2 English from a local university participated in the study. Two tasks were administered to collect data for the study. They were a Grammaticality Judgment Test (GJT), and a Directionality Judgment Test (DJT...

The book's chapters deal with the universal themes of all aspects of life love, marriage, children, etc. It is considered as a full representation for a comprehensive survey for all the meanings on earth, . Bushrui asserts that the language of The Prophet represents the unity in diversity as a passionate belief in the healing power of universal love and the unity of being (ibid, 1988: 68). The study will attempt to identify the universal themes underlying the text with the core of micro and macro levels. The theoretical grounding for this study draws upon the fact that the book has become so popular in many cultures is an indication the extent of interest in positive ideology which presented universal themes and messages appeal. Waterfield declares that The Prophet has not been out of print since it was first published, and has sold more than ten million copies in English language alone. It has also been translated to more than twenty-five languages (Waterfield: 1998:257). The universal themes and messages that emerge from the writings show an absence of the in-group versus out-group distinction that is often evident in other Gibran's works.
