Research ethics in science and engineering should play an important role in our academic endeavor... more Research ethics in science and engineering should play an important role in our academic endeavor. This interest has motivated us to explore innovative strategies to improve this field at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) sponsored by the National Science Foundation. We have observed that there is a wealth of literature related to research ethics in the field of bioethics. However, we have found a dearth of literature related to the ethical implications of research in engineering. The objective of this paper is twofold. First, to identify various areas that should be studied under research ethics in engineering. Second, to present a strategy that has been developed at our institution to start dealing with the preparation of graduate students and faculty in the field of research ethics. The strategy developed at UPRM includes a series of workshops developed for graduate students, a developmental workshop for new faculty along with strategies to incorporate ethics across the curriculum and a free standing graduate course in research ethics. The paper also presents several issues related to research ethics in engineering. At the end, various questions are raised and topics to be studied are presented.

The author claims that the epistemological statute of a dialogue determines the fundamental question that is raised and the answer that is sought, essential points of discourse. In the case of bioethics, the fundamental question is of a moral nature. Therefore, bioethics is an ethical discipline that has its epistemological roots in philosophy. The author also defends the concept of applied ethics. Finally, he suggests that bioethical methods, above all especially what is realized in our latitudes, should adopt the Hermeneutic Circle as the methodology for its philosophizing.El artículo examina el estatuto epistemológico de la bioética como disciplina académica. Training in Research ethics should be central to the education of graduate students in science an... more Training in Research ethics should be central to the education of graduate students in science and engineering. Unfortunately, there have been several cases of serious research misconduct. Because research touches upon important aspects of human life, research misconduct can seriously and negatively influence society as a whole. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce graduate students in science and engineering to basic issues in research ethics. At the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus (UPRM), an interdisciplinary group of investigators created Graduate Education in Research Ethics for Scientists and Engineers (GERESE) to integrate research ethics into the graduate curriculum in science and engineering. Funded by the National Science Foundation, this project has developed four workshops directed toward graduate students to provide them with decision making tools for reaching ethical decisions. The paper argues that, for the most part, disasters are not natural. Although natural hazards nor... more The paper argues that, for the most part, disasters are not natural. Although natural hazards normally affect all residents of a geographical area, they are rarely affected to the same degree, given that social vulnerability is unequally distributed in most societies. Social vulnerability is causally related to the distribution of wealth, power, and social status in society, therefore, its distribution is a social justice issue. This paper also analyses the connections between climate change and the increased risk of climate disasters. Pope Francis’ “integral ecology” is proposed as a path to the future.

This paper describes a work in progress focused on graduate education activities that will immers... more This paper describes a work in progress focused on graduate education activities that will immerse graduate students in Research Ethics. The project aims to develop ethical awareness and basic skills in moral deliberation. Because these workshops will verify common concerns in Research Ethics, it is expected that they will also produce results valuable to other institutions. The ethical deliberation workshop is the second in a series of four workshops introducing the students to the basic issues in Research Ethics. The moral deliberation workshop will be followed by a Case Analysis Workshop which includes the analysis of famous cases of Research Ethics misconduct as well as hypothetical cases that are likely to be encountered in the student's career. The hypothetical cases include situations related to fabrication, falsification and plagiarism.

El autor sostiene que el estatuto epistemológico de un discurso lo determina la pregunta fundamental que se plantea y la respuesta que se busca, focos integradores del discurso. En el caso de la bioética, la pregunta fundamental es de índole moral. La bioética es pues una disciplina ética que tiene su hogar epistemológico en la filosofía. El autor también defiende el concepto de "éticas aplicadas". Sugiere finalmente que el método de la bioética, sobre todo la que se hace desde nuestras latitudes, debería adoptar el círculo hermenéutico como metodología para su filosofar.

A nuestro modo de ver, la identidad epistemologica la determina la pregunta fundamental que guia la investigacion en una determinada disciplina; aquello que los escolasticos llamaban el "objeto formal" de la disciplina.
