Research paper thumbnail of Delabialization after *u and the distribution of labiovelars in dialectal Proto-Indo-European

Evidence is presented in support of a typologically based hypothesis of a pre-final stage of PIE ... more Evidence is presented in support of a typologically based hypothesis of a pre-final stage of PIE in which palatovelars were opposed to a single set of phonemes, each phoneme comprising plain velar allophones and labiovelar allophones. During this stage delabialization of the labiovelar allophones took place in the environment after *u, the output being reinterpreted as palatovelars. The stage was terminated when one of the backvelar allophones – which one depending on the dialect – spread beyond its original environment(s) and became dominant in a specific set of dialects. The hypothesis thus contributes (1) a solution to the gutturalfrage that is not limited to inadequately motivated rejections of one or other of the three series of tectal phonemes on offer in the current mainstream reconstruction of PIE occlusives; (2) a rationale for the rise of labiovelars in PIE, (3) a coherent explanation for a currently unacknowledged source of gutturalwechsel, viz. delabialization after *u in satem languages and (4) motivation for the replacement of the awkward concept of “palatalization after *u” in Armenian by a straightforward delabialization.

It improves on my earlier attempts of 1996 and 1999 and is based on responses to the criticisms of Frederik Kortlandt, the more crucial of which responses, including essentially a demolition of Kortlandt's accent-based theory, were published in Indogermanische Forschungen 2006 and 2008, a journal unfortunately pursuing a policy on the use of boldface type unhelpful for the present paper.

The assumed inhibiting effect of h3 on assibilation of the assumed root-initial prevelar/ palatovelar ino- nand zero-grade forms ushers in a wider range of possible Balto-Slavic cognates permitting a motivated answer to the ongoing question of the relationship between the groups containing OE geap 'wide' and geap 'bent', respectively. A possible etymology is suggested for the previously largely isolated group of Lith. Zaubiu 'eat with full/ open mouth'.

Arguments for the Vedic parentage of Sindhi are presented (in n. 46 and the Appendix), as well as an argument based on Lubotsky's 1988 theory of the origin of the PIE accent that PIE preglottalized mediae originated in nonglottalized stops and therefore offer no evidence for the quasi-traditional 'glottalic theory'. Arguments demolishing alleged counterexamples to an unrestricted form of Fortunatov's law relating to Indo-Aryan retroflex stops are also presented with other novel conclusions regarding the history of liquids in Indo-Iranian.

The tissue analysis involves: enzymatic release of the halofuginone followed by ethyl acetate extraction under basic conditions, partition into ammonium acetate buffer, concentration using Sep-pakTM C18 cartridge. The feed analysis involves: ethyl acetate extraction under basic conditions, partition into hydrochloric acid, concentration using XAD-2 column chromatography. Both methods use high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection for the final analysis. Precision and accuracy data for both methods are given.

Research paper thumbnail of The significance of laryngeal edema following radiotherapy of carcinoma of the vocal cord

Cancer, Feb 15, 1982

Laryngeal edema persisting for more than three months following radiotherapy developed in 38 of 2... more Laryngeal edema persisting for more than three months following radiotherapy developed in 38 of 247 (15.4%) patients irradiated for carcinoma of the vocal cord. In 17 (44.7%) of these patients, the laryngeal edema was associated with persistent or recurrent disease, although only 25.4% of the patients with uncontrolled disease had laryngeal edema. The incidence of laryngeal edema was 13.1% for TI disease, 23.8% for Tb and 21.4% for T3 and T4 disease. It increased significantly with increase of minimum tumor dose t 7000 rad or with NSD > 1900 ret, being 46.2% with minimum tumor dose 2 7000 rad and 13.7% with minimum tumor dose < 7000 rad and 43% with NSD > 1900 ret and 17% with NSD I 1900 ret. It also increased with increase of field size, being 13.4% with field sizes < 6.0 X 6.0 cm', and 24.4% with field sizes t 6.0 X 6.0 Em2. When laryngeal edema is progressive and unresponsive to conservative measures, multiple biopsies should be performed to establish the presence of persistent or recurrent disease before salvage surgery is attempted. However, if it is mild, stable, no visible recurrence develops, and especially if it is limited to the arytenoids, no biopsy should be attempted because of the risk of inducing laryngeal necrosis.
