DEA is a non-parametric and objective approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a set of decision-making units. The original DEA proposal contemplated the total freedom of variation of weights. This free variation may lead to situations with non-realistic weights and to the impossibility of incorporating the judgments of decision-makers. This work studies the links between multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) and DEA by introducing weight restrictions in a DEA model using a methodology developed to obtain criteria weights in a MCDA context: the so-called Revised Simos’ Procedure. The presented approach is suitable to be applied in the field of economics and management, being an intuitive and simple enough method for decision-makers who are not familiar with working with DEA models or multicriteria decision analysis. A classic example is presented, where the results f...

The study considers thirteen brands and the total number of publications created by them in 2020 (23,670 publications) on the social network Twitter. Applying machine learning algorithms followed by multiple linear regression techniques, the authors examine how the variables previously mentioned affect a customer engagement indicator developed for this purpose. The results reveal that while publication components (links, mentions, and hashtags) and the publication time slot do not affect customer engagement, the volume of retweets made by the brand and publications on customer experience topics (without a direct commercial purpose) significantly improve the customer engagement indicator. The authors conclude that customer engagement in social networks can only be improved by conducting...

The study, applying machine learning algorithms and multiple linear regressions, reveals which aspects of published content increase the recognition of publications through retweets and favorites. The authors examine (I) the characteristics of the content (publication volumes, publication components, and publication moments) and (II) the message of the content (publication topics). The research considers 21,771 publications and thirty-nine variables. The results show that the recognition obtained through retweets and favorites is conditioned both by the characteristics of the content and by the message of the content. The recognition through retweets improves when the organization uses links, hashtags, and topics related to gender equality, whereas the recognition through favorites increases when the organization uses original tweets, publications betwe...

The authors, following the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on quality education set by the United Nations, propose a questionnaire delivery system through mobile messaging services that overcomes the problem of the low response rates of students for these surveys. The research follows an experimental design, is developed over three years, and involves 811 subjects who are distributed in two groups: an experimental group, in which the questionnaires are delivered through mobile messaging services, and a control group. The researchers examine the existence of differences in response rates through a descriptive comparative exploration between the two groups, also applying the Student’s t-test to evaluate the significance of the findings. The results reveal that the rates for the experimental group are not only higher than those achieved for the control group but are also signific...

This paper tries to study the diffusion processes of Internet users in the African continent, the region of the world with a wider technological gap. In this sense, the main objective of the present research is to predict, ceteris paribus, the maximum level of Internet users in the African continent, in order to help policy makers and firms to adopt the correct policies. Firstly, it is analyzed whether Internet follows in Africa the usual S-shaped diffusion curve which characterizes the adoption processes of new Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). Once we confirm that the diffusion of the Internet in Africa follows an S-shaped diffusion curve, we introduce the historical data of this indicator (published by the International Telecommunication Union in its 2010 World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database) in SPSS, running a logistic function with three parameters. This funtion is explained in the article by using MATLAB.

Urban public road transport has a significant impact on shaping land use patterns, air pollution and welfare. It must therefore be efficient in terms of air pollution in order to contribute to sustainable metropolitan mobility and economic growth. This study proposes a novel and consistent data envelopment analysis, aiming to identify which urban public transport vehicle is the most efficient in terms of air pollution and therefore environmentally suitable for use in public road transport systems. The case of Madrid has been analyzed, as it is representative of other large cities, which have similar bus alternatives and the common objective of reducing air pollution. Madrid City Council data has been compiled by authors and assessed by a panel of twenty experts to determine the model criteria weights. The results sho...

Although for methodological reasons we have found few econometric studies that analyze this theory, in recent years several works have been published to illustrate very relevant aspects of it. The main objective of this article, after reviewing econometric literature on the Austrian cycle, is therefore to analyze the performance of the U.S. economy between 1988 and 2010 in light of the contributions of the endogenous monetary cycle theory.

Available decision support systems, including multiple criteria decision models, allow identifying which urban public transport vehicles are acceptable and those that should no longer be used in efficient and environmentally friendly cities. Previous research has ranked urban public transport vehicles by applying analytic hierarchy process multi-criteria decision-making models, from economic and non-polluting perspectives. However, until now, the types of vehicles acceptable for fleet renewal have not been identified. This study proposes a consistent combination of the ELECTRE TRI multiple criteria decision sorting method and the DELPHI procedure, the objective of which is to identify which urban public transport vehicles are acceptable, taking into consideration a suggested sustainable threshold, which includes economic and environmental strict requirements. On one hand, it intends to approach the African economy and its international institutional framework. On the other hand, it tries to analyze the influence of a set of variables on the degree of Internet penetration in the African countries. It has been carried out an econometric study comparing, at a longitudinal level, the different African countries, to determine the significance of the selected variables on the degree of development and penetration of Internet in the African economy. The methodology of the study is a fixed effects panel data model using all the available data for the period 1996-2005. This model tries to capture the common evolution of Internet use in 38 African countries. At the same time, it tries to explain the unequal (heterogeneous) evolution of telecommunications in Africa. As result of this paper, we can conclude that it is possible to talk about a double digital divide: Firstly the world digital divide, and secondly the African digital divide, explained by the importance of telecommunication infrastructures on the Internet penetration.
