It will first look at the approach used by brothers Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, which could be considered as veritable translation school of thought. It will then examine other approaches.

The expansion of the reading public as a consequence of a new order and the modernization of the book industry were accompanied by translations of American literature. In this article we look into the growing presence of the US through translations in Brazil in this period and the different ways in which this presence could be seen.

This article examines the translation of religious texts by the Jesuit missionary José de Anchiet... more This article examines the translation of religious texts by the Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta in Brazil in the 16th century. The article shows that Anchieta used a large amount of inculturation, a readiness to mix Catholic and native Indian terms, in order to achieve the catechism of the Indians, their acculturation into Catholicism. However, this inculturation always remained at a superficial level as Anchieta used terms from the spiritual world of the Tupi Indians but made no attempt to understand the deeper meaning of these terms. The article describes the background of Spanish and Portuguese colonizers in Latin America, lists the characteristics of the Tupi Indian language and analyzes a number of Anchieta’s writings in Tupi in which he translated certain important Christian concepts into Tupi.

The paper initially describes Risorgimento, Reformist and Integral programmes of nationalism, linking them respectively with the German Romantic translation ideas, centralized translation programmes, and the desire to avoid translation. I then look at the case of Brazil under the Getúlio Vargas nationalist authoritarian government of the 1930s and 1940s.

Lobato revolutionized the book industry in Brazil by introducing more commercial techniques and by marketing his books to social classes that were not used to buying books. Lobato also uses his translations to introduce critiques of Brazil in the 1930s, particularly the political and economic closure of the Estado Novo of Getúlio Vargas. Indeed, the criticisms voiced in Peter Pan resulted in Lobato's spending three months in jail in 1941.

The SPI was created in 1910 to intervene in the conflicts that took place during the colonization of the west of the São Paulo state, which occurred with intense brutality towards the indigenous peoples of the region 1. Marechal Cândido Rondon was invited to organize the SPI due to his experience in expeditions in the Brazilian hinterlands acquired during the activities of the Rondon Commission, which was a 15-year project that aimed to link the federal capital at the time, Rio de Janeiro, to the remote northern and western areas of Brazil via telegraph lines. Instead of extinction and the genocide of the indigenous peoples, Rondon advocated a policy of pacification reinforced by the motto "To die if necessary; to kill, never" 2 (Rocha Freire 2010, p. 11).

It then attempts to explain how, despite rigorous censorship, the Clube do Livro managed to publish translations of two works from Romania which contained much socialist realism at the peak of the dictatorship.
