Research paper thumbnail of Productive efficiency of the private universities in Bangladesh: a data envelopment analysis

This paper analyses the productive efficiency of the private universities in Bangladesh using Dat... more This paper analyses the productive efficiency of the private universities in Bangladesh using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). We have found that 25% universities are pure technically efficient in production, 75% are pure technically inefficient, 96% universities are scale inefficient, and almost 100% universities are operating with decreasing returns to scale productive technology. The implication of on-going operation of the private universities is that enhanced operational efficiency is unlikely to generate savings out of operational efficiency individually. Therefore, the universities may think of merging with each other and can generate savings collectively.

This experimental study was carried out to determine the antibacterial effect of Crude Ginger Ext... more This experimental study was carried out to determine the antibacterial effect of Crude Ginger Extract (CGE) and Ethanolic Ginger Extract (EGE) against standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics with the collaboration of Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh from July 2016 to June 2017. The growth of Staphylococcus aureus started to be inhibited from 70% CGE incorporated media and complete inhibition of growth occurred at 100% CGE. In case of Ethanolic Extract, sensitivity was seen against Staphylococcus aureus using disc diffusion method. Zones of inhibition were 8, 13 and 19 mm at 25, 50 and 100 μg/10 μl respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EGE was assessed by broth dilution technique. The MIC of EGE was 400 μg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus. From the study it is clearly observed that there is definite antibacterial effect of crude ginger extract (CGE) and ethanolic ginger extract...

Research paper thumbnail of The relation between an ageing population and economic growth in Bangladesh: Evidence from an endogenous growth model

We employed a bivariate endogenous growth model to investigate the relationship between the population aged 65 years and above and per capita gross domestic product (GDP). The study found that there is a long-run positive relationship between the ageing population and per capita real GDP. The relationship runs from an ageing population to per capita real GDP, given that there is an increasing capital formation process in the economy. Therefore, the elderly population is not a matter of concern for Bangladesh as long as per capita capital formation has been greater than that of per capita ageing population.

This study uses the survey data of 391 households randomly selected from the Western Downs Region of Queensland, Australia, and employs the propensity score matching technique to make causal inferences. This study also controls selection bias issuesan aspect which has been overlooked in previous studies. This study found that the causal effect of household access to broadband Internet on individuals' labour force outcomes is not statistically significant. This finding can add value to our knowledge of the causal relationship between broadband access and labour force participation. As the rollout of a high-speed broadband network in rural and regional Australia is currently underway, the finding can be considered a benchmark for subsequent assessment of the effects of such infrastructure development on socioeconomic outcomes.

Research paper thumbnail of The effects of telephone infrastructure on farmers' agricultural outputs in China

Information Economics and Policy, 2017

This paper examines the effect of farmers' access to communication technologies (CTs) on farmers'... more This paper examines the effect of farmers' access to communication technologies (CTs) on farmers' agricultural output at the aggregate level in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China) based on panel data. The paper uses a dynamic Cobb-Douglas aggregate production function and the generalised method of moments (GMM) as estimation techniques to estimate the parameters of interests. The research findings are: the estimated effects (measured by elasticity) of teledensity on the provincial level agricultural output have been positive and statistically significant both in the short and long runs. In the long-run, the size of the effect is substantial: from 0.94 to 1.06. This implies that the agriculture sector of the P. R. China has some potentials to derive benefit from the use of CTs like telephone. Hence, the Chinese government should consider policy support to expand communication infrastructure for the farmers.

Research paper thumbnail of Modelling a Causal Relationship between the Internet and Academic Research Performance in an Australian University: A Case Study

Margin: The Journal of Applied Economic Research, 2016

This study examines the relationship between academics’ use of the Internet for academic purposes... more This study examines the relationship between academics’ use of the Internet for academic purposes and their research performance using cross-sectional data collected from academics of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Australia, during the period February–March 2014. In this study, a system of simultaneous equation models is used to control the potential bias associated with simultaneity between the use of the Internet and academics’ research performances. The simultaneity, a potential econometric problem, was overlooked in past studies. A finding of this study is that academics’ use of the Internet is a statistically significant contributor to research output in an Australian university. The estimated elasticity of research output is 0.16 with respect to changes in Internet use. JEL Classifications: C3, D8, I2

Research paper thumbnail of Energy use, international trade and economic growth nexus in Australia: New evidence from an extended growth model

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2016

This study investigates the existence of either energy-led growth hypothesis or trade-led growth ... more This study investigates the existence of either energy-led growth hypothesis or trade-led growth in Australia for a 53-year period (1960–2012) using a multivariate extended growth model. The econometric techniques used in this study are Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach of cointegration, the Granger Causality Test and Impulse Response Functions. The study finds the evidence of no long-run cointegration between the variables of interest. Granger causality test confirms bidirectional causal relationship between international trade and per capita GDP growth, but does not find any Granger causal relationship between energy use and per capita GDP growth. Thus, this study provides an evidence of the trade-led growth hypothesis over the energy-led growth hypothesis for the Australian macroeconomy.

To achieve the goal, the government has set up a strategy to reduce the share of out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure from the current 64% of the total household healthcare costs to 32% at the national level. As the majority of the people live in the rural areas, and the rural people are generally poor, the success of the strategy relies predominantly on any type of pro-poor healthcare policy and strategy. To estimate if there is any feedback effect in the healthcare costs model and to estimate relative contributions of various determinants to OOP medical expenditure in rural Bangladesh. This study used an econometric approach and a system of simultaneous equations models. The OOP expenditure was measured by household medical expenditure, which is a sum of expenditures for medicine, ayurvedic, various kinds of tests, hospitalization...

I am motivated to conduct the research because politicians and scholars feel that the digital economy is a way ahead for improving the living standards of general Australians. Although a substantial research initiative has already been undertaken by previous researchers to examine the benefits of modern ICTs (information and communication technologies) in society, the extent of benefits (or problems) associated with the expansion of digital infrastructure facilities are yet to be estimated for at least two sectors of the economy – higher education and agriculture. In the given context of the Australian Government’s policy on the digital future, this thesis aims to study the effects of digital technologies,...

This paper reports estimation of cost function of the private university of Bangladesh on the basis of panel data drawn from the University of Grant Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh for the year 2003-2006. Through cost function study we report about economies of scale, and optimum number of universities for a given level of output. Fixed effects generate least square linear regression is applied to estimate quadratic average cost model. The study reports that in the private university there are economies of scale on average up to the level of around 4300 threshold. Furthermore, it reports that improved cost efficiency among the private universities can generate saving upto 17 per cent, and optimum number of university is 28 that is far below that the present number of total private universities.

Benefit incidence analysis is done and gini coefficient is estimated using data from Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2005. The resulted is compared with previous findings of th e year 1996. Gini coefficient shows that higher education opportunity still favors th e reach. Over the last five year s with increasing enrollment in public universities and degree colleges, inequality has been increased slightly.
