Diverse technische en methodische ontwikkelingen hebben grootschalig vergelijkend onderzoek naar ... more Diverse technische en methodische ontwikkelingen hebben grootschalig vergelijkend onderzoek naar historische sociale stratificatie mogelijk gemaakt. Met de kwantiteit van de onderzoekspopulatie is echter ook de diversiteit van de onderzoekspopulatie toegenomen. Aan de ene kant biedt deze variatie mogelijkheden voor onderzoek naar de invloed van contextuele kenmerken op het proces van statusverwerving. Aan de andere kant betekent het vaak dat de onderzoekseenheden uit één en dezelfde context niet onafhankelijk zijn, een belangrijke aanname bij veel gebruikte regressietechnieken. In een dergelijk geval raden statistici het gebruik van multiniveauanalyse aan. Na een beknopte uitleg van deze techniek volgt een toepassing ervan. Hierbij wordt onderzocht of het verband tussen beroepsstatus van vaders en zonen in Zeeland eind negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw verschilde tussen gemeenten en over de tijd. Tevens wordt getoetst of dergelijke verschillen samenhangen met urbanisering, migratie en religie.

In this paper we report on the estimation of a variety of 'HIS-CAM' scales of occupational strati... more In this paper we report on the estimation of a variety of 'HIS-CAM' scales of occupational stratification. The scales are estimated from marriage records collected over the period 1800-1938 in six countries: Britain, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. A dataset of approximately 400,000 marriages is collated, from which the occupation of the groom, bride, and parents of the groom and bride are given HISCO codes. The analysis proceeds by conducting 'RC-II' association models on cross-tabulations of child-to-parent occupations. These models may be estimated at a 'universal' level (a single occupational scale on the entire dataset), but they may also be estimated on subsets of data from different time periods and/or countries (a series of 'specific' occupational scales, for different countries). We find that specific occupational scale estimations are statistically favoured, and offer some revealing insights into the structure of occupational stratification in the period. Nevertheless, we also find evidence that universal occupational stratification scales are substantively parsimonious, insofar as they do a fair job of incorporating most, if not all, of the important differences in occupational stratification positions.

According to the logic of industrialism thesis during industrialization, the influence of, achiev... more According to the logic of industrialism thesis during industrialization, the influence of, achieved characteristics on mate selection increased, while the influence of ascribed, characteristics decreased. Other processes that accompanied industrialization, such as, the development of mass communication, urbanization, increasing regional mobility, modern transport, and educational expansion, were hypothesized to break down, cultural differences and cause a decline of status based mate selection. This study, provides a first direct test of these hypotheses by analyzing a large dataset on, marriages in the Dutch province Zeeland between 1811 and 1915, a period before and, during industrialization. Industrialization and the other afore mentioned processes, were measured at the local level in each year of marriage, to take both local and, temporal variation into account. Using multilevel analyses it is shown that (1) the, influence of ascribed and achieved characteristics on status of the spouse differed, considerably between municipalities and changed over time, (2) the influence of, ascribed characteristics decreased, while the influence of achieved characteristics, remained unchanged, (3) the logic of industrialism thesis is supported, while, processes accompanying industrialization are less systematically related to changes in, ascription and achievement. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17

This article studies the influence of macro-level developments on intergenerational status transf... more This article studies the influence of macro-level developments on intergenerational status transfer in the Dutch province of Zeeland between 1811 and 1915. Hypotheses on the effects of industrialization, educational expansion, mass communication, urbanization, geographical mobility, and mass transport are derived from conflicting theories. The influences of these contextual characteristics on status attainment are tested using hierarchical linear models, incorporating data on some 40,000 fathers and sons in over 100 municipalities. The results show regional as well as temporal differences in the association between a father's and a son's occupational status. In contrast to what is supposed by the logic of industrialism thesis, hardly any of the macro-level developments decreased the influence of a father's occupational status on that of his son. On the contrary, a father's status became more influential in the more industrialized areas.

This study examines whether the increase of geographical heterogamy in the nineteenth and early t... more This study examines whether the increase of geographical heterogamy in the nineteenth and early twentieth century is related to modernization. Specifically, we test whether mass communication and mass transport enhanced the likelihood of a geographically heterogamous marriage as well as the distance over which heterogamous marriages took place. Furthermore, we study whether modernization decreased the relationship between social background and geographical heterogamy. We employ individual and municipality level data of some 30,000 marriages in over 40 municipalities in the Dutch province Overijssel between 1823 and 1922. The results from our multi-level analyses suggest that mass communication was more important than mass transport.

Each day, a countless number of items is sold through online auction sites such as eBay and Ricar... more Each day, a countless number of items is sold through online auction sites such as eBay and Ricardo. Though abuse is being reported more and more, transactions seem to be relatively hassle free. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is that the sites' reputation mechanisms prevent opportunistic behavior. To analyze this issue, we first summarize and extend the mechanisms that affect the probability of sale of an item and its price. We then try to replicate the results as found in four recent papers on online auctions. Our analyses reveal that (1) it makes sense to differentiate between 'power sellers' and the less regular users, (2) there are variables that have an effect on sales that are often not controlled for, (3) one should carefully consider how reputation is operationalized, (4) neglecting heteroscedasticity in the data can have serious consequences, and there is some support indicating that effects differ across auction sites.
