On the other hand, film texts have received, thanks to these disciplines, the attention they deserve as object of analysis. Semiotics offers to spectators tools to interpret the implicatures and symbolic inferences that every film contains. Cinema often exploits the concept of stereotype and its expressive function, especially in its comic side. Lately movies based on national stereotypes and (inter) cultural misunderstandings have proliferated. This paper analyses the topics about the Greeks, their culturemes in contrast to the Americans, the inter-cultural clash between both and the identity problems of the Greek immigrants in America that provide an argumentative basis for the comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

The Crown, a Netflix TV series, associates both goals and can serve as a starting point for digging into various topics. We will analyze in this paper one of the episodes of the third season to look over the complex history of Greece in the twentieth century and the thrilling biography of Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, one of the main characters of the series, born Prince of Greece and Denmark.

beginning, Angelopoulos’ works draw their inspiration from two central themes: his personal
experiences and the Greek reality. All his filmography exudes a profound social and political
concern, (the dictatorship, the emigration and the exile, the frontiers, the war, the communism
and its fall…) and also ethical (death, solitude, childhood and old age, paternity, the rural
world, the exploitation of other human beings), always together with a historical quest of the
identity of his distressed country in the background. His own vital experience breaklessly
intertwines with the recent history of Greece and its very prolonged heritage.

ABSTRACT. Tasos Bulmetis raises the intercultural conflicts of a small community, the Greeks deported from Istanbul, in his work A touch of Spice (Πολίτικη Κουζίνα, 2003), a film full of symbols, metaphors and culturemes where cooking works like a sign of identity.

Born in New York in a family of Jewish Russian emigrants, he soon transitioned from the world of theater to that of film making. Dassin is recognized as one of the Masters of the American “film noir”, but his career in Hollywood was truncated by senator MacCarthy's 'witch hunt' in the 50s.
After going into exile in Paris, he found a lot of difficulties and obstacles to continue his career (even after having created a masterpiece like Rififi), until his meeting in Cannes with the actress Melina Mercouri, who offered him the opportunity to start a new life together in Greece.
He is the author of a wide and varied filmography, with emblematic titles like The Canterville Ghost, Brute Force, The naked city, Night and the city, Rififí, Never on Sunday, Fedra, or Topkapi. Topics such as social justice, solidarity and companionship, delation and perfidy, permeate his movies.
The Dictatorship in Greece forced Dassin and Mercouri to go into exile again. After their return to Greece, he supported the political career of his wife, and her campaign for the for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles and the Reunification of the Monument.
Dassin dedicated his last years to this aim and advocated for the construction of the New Museum of the Acropolis in Athens.

renewal of the Classical Tradition into a cinematographic language that
combines myth, poetry, music, philosophy and Classical tragedy with
contemporary history. His film concept is very close to the theater and
especially the tragedy of Aeschylus, though The Weeping Meadow (2004), the
first piece of his latest trilogy, the influence of Euripides is also perceived. The
ancient myth is recreated in a tragedy of the twentieth century.

She analyses his poetic work "The free besieged" and his importance for the Greek Language, specially in the context of this film, where.is used as a symbol of Greek values which, in times of crisis (either individual -illness- or collective -war, immigration-) turn themselves into universal referents such as freedom and human dignity
