Neither the editors Lyons and Morgan (1991) nor any of the few critics that have recently commented on this piece have identified the text upon which the play is drawn. The answer to this riddle is to be found in The Lives and Characters of the English Dramatick Poets (1699). The main plot of that comedy is Alexander Oldys's The Fair Extravagant, or The Humorous Bride, a practically unknown text that has not been reprinted since 1682. The aim of this paper is to (re-)unearth that source, and to analyse how Ariadne adapted the male-authored original for her own purposes as a woman dramatist, combined it with a farcical subplot, and endeavoured to tailor it to the new tastes of the town.

the first women writers of prose fiction in Britain and Spain respectively, both wrote in the fir... more the first women writers of prose fiction in Britain and Spain respectively, both wrote in the first half of the seventeenth century, but they chose to do it in two different narrative genres. Wroth's The Countess of Montgomery's Urania (1621) was a long roman à clef with reminiscences of Sidney's Arcadia, full of inset stories told by distressed ladies, whining lovers, and valiant knights in the conventional abstract settings of the Elizabethan romance. In contrast, Zayas's Novelas ejemplares y amorosas (1637) and Desengaños amorosos (1647) were collections of framed short stories in the manner of the novela cortesana, in vogue in Spain at the time. Yet the works of these precursory women novelists had many points in common: 1) Both writers focused on male inconstancy and defended women's fidelity. 2) Both vindicated women's education and their capacity to write valuable literary works. 3) Both considered women able to rule countries successfully. 4) Both gave free expression to female desire. 5) Both created androgynous characters, with which they challenged the neat conventional distinctions between genders. 6) Both showed instances of close friendship between women. 7) Both argued for women's right to choose their destiny without patriarchal intervention. This paper attempts to analyse how Wroth and Zayas dealt with the first of these points, men's inconstancy, in their prose fiction. Talking about Urania, Tina Krontiris (1992: 135) has stated that constancy is the central subject of the book. And Carolyn Swift (1990: 155) has also noted that "Queen Pamphilia's constant love for the unfaithful King Amphilanthus is the central story, from which myriad friends and relatives depart and return to narrate mirroring adventures". Thus, most of the female characters in Urania are constant, while most of the men are unfaithful. With this Wroth implies that the situation is common in society, something that her narrator and her female characters often explicitly endorse throughout the narrative.

Miguel de Cervantes's narrative "El curioso impertinente" ["The Curious Impertinent"] inserted in... more Miguel de Cervantes's narrative "El curioso impertinente" ["The Curious Impertinent"] inserted into the first part of Don Quixote, fascinated the English playwrights of the seventeenth century. This tragic story about curiosity, fidelity, voyeurism and male homosociality was adapted in plots or subplots of several plays written in the Jacobean and Restoration periods, though often, however, averting the tragic ending and adding comedic elements. As regards Restoration adaptations, two good examples are Aphra Behn's The Amorous Prince; or The Curious Husband (1671) and John Crowne's The Married Beau; or, The Curious Impertinent (1694). Behn's play is a tragicomedy built around a romantic intrigue that attempts to exploit both the serious and comic potentials of the story, and provides a happy ending of reconciliation and multiple marriages thanks to the resolute intervention of the female characters. Crowne's work, however, largely downplays the seriousness of the plot and turns the action around more conceited and superficial characters, who provide several laughter-raising situations. In The Married Beau the comedic happy ending is favoured not through witty intrigue but through repentance. This article intends to analyse this genre shift and, more particularly, how Crowne adapts Cervantes's story to the English comic stage of the 1690s.

This article contends that Behn adapts French farce and Italian commedia dell'arte to the English Restoration stage mostly resorting to deception farce in order to trick old husbands or fathers, or else foolish, hypocritical coxcombs, and displaying an impressive, skilful use of disguise and impersonation. Behn also turns widely to physical comedy, which is described in detail in stage directions. She appropriates farce in an attempt to please the audience, but also in the service of her own interests as a Tory woman writer.

This paper shows how this is presented in a kind of novel of trial that intends to test the protagonist's manly virtues through a comic displacement of chivalric romance. It draws on Bakhtin's concept of Prüfungsroman and his idea that the novel is a markedly dialogic genre, often permeated with irony and parody. This analysis also assumes that manhood is a social and cultural construction which is materialised in a status that men must achieve under the constant scrutiny and assessment of others.

Th e book under review is one such example, and a wise and successful re-elaboration of many issues that its author, Pilar Cuder-Domínguez, a specialist in early modern literature, gender and postcolonial theory, has dealt with in previous articles and essays. Th is monograph is a sound and groundbreaking analysis of the tragedy and tragicomedy written by women dramatists during the Stuart period, and deserves the attention that its publication by Ashgate is likely to bring.

The aim of the collection is to illustrate the richness and diversity of late Stuart drama by bringing to light plays of interest that so far have attracted little critical attention, in fully annotated, modernized editions, which are prefaced by an extensive analysis of each text and the context in which it was produced. I welcome the series and this first volume in How to cite this review:
