Yet the relevance of acquaintance to ontology has not always been clearly stated. Some philosophers have held that they were acquainted with the simple entities of ontological analysis. They also held that if they were not acquainted with such entities, their analysis would be inadequately supported. In this paper I argue that acquaintance with ontological simples cannot be a reason for accepting or rejecting any ontological analysis. At the same time, I examine what I believe to be the relevance of acquaintance to ontological description.

Griinbaum's first feature, described in (1), seems to rest upon two aspects of Newtonian time, First, the existence of instants in receptacle time does not depend upon the existence of physical events in time. For example, in the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence, Clarke, writing with the approval and advice of Newton, allows that it makes sense to suppose that the physical universe was created at an earlier instant in absolute time, implying that time can exist without physical events in time ([1], p. 32). Newton himself suggests that instants of absolute time, which he refers to in places as "indivisible moments of duration," depend only upon God ([5], p. 545). Second, each instant exemplifies a unique set of relational properties to other instants; a relational property of an instant, A, might be coming (temporally) before another instant B. Newton seems to locate the identity of instants in their relations to other instants when he writes:

In order to understand the different publications that are produced by these movements, it is necessary to explore the main factions in what is a highly sectarian set of movements. In this article, I identify these factions as perspectives. Each perspective offers an understanding of what creates and maintains the masculine gender role in society, an evaluation of the role, and a political agenda that conforms to its evaluation. What follows are brief descriptions of the perspectives that currently publish their own newsletters, journals, and magazines, or that are already entrenched in popular and/or scientific media. However, within each perspective there are a variety of voices, some of which I shall separately identify. There is also considerable influence from one perspective to another. In fact, many essayists eschew ideological purity (and often consistency) in favor of some pragmatic blend of ideas from several perspectives. Conservatives The classical conservative distrusts federal governments and the masses about equally. Such conservatives would invest the intermediate institutions of society, such as family, church, and community, with the greatest moral and legal authority. Classical conservatives do not think highly of human nature, especially male nature. Men are in need of civilizing, and women and social institutions are given that task. Such a perspective tends to be essentialist, that is, to believe "MEN AND MASCULINITY-SPRING 1994 25

Within these grand issues, there are four central and specific questions: (1) Do bodies act on other bodies? (2) Do minds act on bodies? (3) Do bodies act on minds? (4) What, if any, is the division oflabor between God and created things in producing change? In this extremely useful volume, editor Steven Nadler has collected ten papers each of which contributes to a better understanding of causation in early modem philosophy-especially with respect to the grand issues and central questions. The variety of topics encompassed in this volume plus the fact that the papers are relatively short-about 25 printed pages-leaves the reader asking more questions and wanting more information. Such a volume-solid in its history and provocative in its content-constitutes an excellent foundation for a seminar on causation in the early modem period. Daniel Garber's essay, "Descartes and Occasionalism," quickly reaches the conclusion that "in the material world, at least, Godis the only genuine causal agent" (p. 14). Garber argues that this conclusion is a consequence of Descartes' "doctrine of continual re-creation" or, what is the same "divine sustenance" (pp. 12-13). Garber's basic argument is that, given Descartes' view that conserving the world is equivalent to recreating (sustaining) it at each moment, Descartes is committed either to the cinematic view that at each moment of time God recreates each finite substance complete with its set of properties including its place, or the divineimpulse view that at each moment God "causes motion by impulse, by a kind of divine shove" (p. 15). On the first view, it is clear that when God recreates a material substance, God must either recreate it at the same place or a different place; hence local motion becomes a direct effect of God's will. On the second view, Garber's preferred interpretation, there may be causes of motion other than God,
