Evidence to support his claim is provided by a detailed comparison of the republication with the unique first version purchased by Waldemar Łysiak that the writer rendered available in 2001 (two copies known before the World War II perished). Collation of the two specimens reveals various discrepancies (e.g. errors in rhythm and rhyming) which makes the researcher consider editio princeps as more diligently prepared and closer to Kochanowski’s language habits. Eventually, it should serve as a basis for future scientific publications.

Contrary to some earlier analyses of the poem, especially the most recent one by Roman Doktór, who claimed that the ode was a manifestation of the poet's servility toward Bishop Michał Jerzy Poniatowski, the present author argues that Trembecki's intention was quite different. Referring to the bishop's ceremonial ingress, the writer used the form of a congratulatory panegyric, but under the guise of praise, he clearly mocked both the new ecclesiastical dignitary and his brother, King Stanisław August.

The attribution results from a conjecture, which has never been properly verified, formulated by Ludwik Bernacki in 1904. Yet in the 1630s Jan Wojciech Łubieński held no public office (he was probably completing his education) and, crucially, did not become Pantler of Sieradz until 1643. In consequence, we presume that Baryka's patron may well have been Łubieński's uncle, a wealthy man renowned for his generosity, who had the same first name.

Allowing for the contexts of the baroque poet’s output that were absent from the research to this day as well as for a fragment of Institutio principis Christiani (The Education of a Christian Prince) by Desiderius Erasmus—the piece that mentions the tyrant Busiris, the author of the paper proves that the word refers to a wild beast and is
a part of Twardowski’s poetic language. A similar usage is found in a piece by Adrian Wieszczycki. Referring to late output, the author settles that the form “Buzyr” became in the second half of the 17th century Polish language, possibly influenced by Twardowski, also an alternant form of the ancient tyrant’s name (found also at the beginning of the 19th century). The two words, however, differ in grammatical gender: “buzyra” is a common feminine noun, while “Buzyr” is a masculine proper noun.

The present study analyses the references to the rule of the Vasa Dynasty in the Polish-Lithuania... more The present study analyses the references to the rule of the Vasa Dynasty in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, scattered in the works by Samuel Twardowski (d. 1661), a poet of the High Baroque. The poet’s opinions refer to a coherent set of views and ideas defining the place of the Polish king within the state, describing his majesty, the nature of his power, and his obligations towards his subjects who should be the guarantor of the monarch’s security. Writing about Sigismund III, Vladyslav IV, and John Casimir, Twardowski idealised their images, adapting them to the opinions about the ideal ruler present in the state discourse of the Polish nobility. In Twardowski’s, each of the Vasa kings is a rex armatus, the defender of the country and giver of peace. He attached great importance to the military upbringing of the princes, affirming the cult of military bravery, exhibited from an early age. This was, of course, the result of the geopolitical situation of the country, leading to frequent armed conflicts with its neighbours, and requiring a brave and efficient commander on the throne. Presenting the military deeds of the kings, the poet drew attention to the personal bravery of the ruler and the endurance of camp hardships. Despite this, Twardowski said several times that the supreme goal of the king in the Commonwealth was to bring to his subjects peace producing
economic well-being. A question often raised by the poet was the status of the king in the Commonwealth. It is well illustrated by frequently used metaphors related to the sun and light, expressing the special and necessary role of the monarch in a country – not only was the ruler distinguished by his exceptional splendour but also he was a guarantor of order, giving his subjects a sense of security. Owing to this approach, the king seemed to be a necessary condition for the existence of the Commonwealth. Twardowski also was returning to the thought that the foundation of the ruler’s power in the state of the nobles was the love of his subjects, and that love guarded his immunity. That love should result from the king’s respect for the rights of citizens, his care for their safety, his justice and mercy. This vision of a monarch was contrasted with the rule of tyrants, who must be protected by strong gates and numerous guards. This concept resulted from the recognition of the servant role of the king in the state. In the poet’s works, the elevation of an individual
means the acceptance of special obligations that also result from his
anointing. The king is a person representing God, but also responsible
to him, embodying justice on earth and obliged to respect the ethical
standards set before him. He must necessarily be pious, and the poet had no doubts (a consequence of the triumph of the Counter-Reformation) that only the Catholic confession deserves privileges because it guarantees the protection of Providence.

laureate, who found themselves in the milieu of the Vasa court or tried
to get closer to it, as well as authors who were casually granted the king’s favour. Contrary to earlier approaches, the author concludes that it is difficult in the case of Kings Sigismund III, Vladyslav IV, and John II
Casimir to talk about the actual care provided to poets. Their interest
in poetry should be regarded as accidental, which is especially evident
in comparison with their care of historians who were to present the history of the homeland and commemorate the achievements of the rulers. Only Marie Louise Gonzaga, as it seems, intended to transfer French customs to the Polish court by inviting Marc-Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant, but he stayed in Warsaw for only a few months. Other poets indicated in older studies as benefiting from the patronage of the Vasas, such as Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski or Jan Andrzej Morsztyn, in fact significantly limited their writing activity, once they became courtiers.

Starting with general remarks on the attitude of the renaissance writers to travelling as a form ... more Starting with general remarks on the attitude of the renaissance writers to travelling as a form of educating a man and the place of the topos of peregrinatio accademica in old biographies the author of the study analyses the function of topos in Polish biographical and autobiographical declarations of the 16th century. The observations allow the statement that the renaissance biographers constrained themselves. They gave only information on making a journey abroad for educational reasons and connecting this fact with pursuit of knowledge. On occasion they expanded this information with additional components. For example, information on care and attention of a master or on friendships made during the studies should be related to the humanistic idea of the intellectual community. In the age of Counter Reformation attention was given also to the religious character of this type of education. Sometimes the authors of the analyzed declarations connected the fact of making a journey with a choice of an existential model: insisting either on the model of an active life or of a contemplative one. Particularly interesting are the realizations of the topos which are related to understanding travel as a form of molding an individual, an all-around development on the way to perfection but also a situation which allows one to prove the knowledge gained already. The academic journey was connected to the topos of sapientia et fortitudo, adding to an affirmation of the ideal of a person being a perfect courtier. This proves that the peregrination as a form of human activity was sometimes connected with ethical categories, becoming a convention of praising which served an instructing (parenetic) presentation.

Polish heroic poetry before and after "Jerusalem Delivered" (from "The Prussian War" by Joannis V... more Polish heroic poetry before and after "Jerusalem Delivered" (from "The Prussian War" by Joannis Vislicensis to "The Khotym War" by Ignacy Krasicki)

The article is a review of the most important trends in the development of the Polish epic in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the absence of significant traditions of knightly works, the creation of Polish heroic poetry should be associated primarily with the humanistic movement whose representatives set a heroic epic at the top of the hierarchy of genres and recognized "Eneid" as its primary model. The postulate proposed first by the Renaissance and later by the Baroque authors did not lead to the creation of a “real” epic in Poland. The translations of: the Virgil’s epic poem (1590) by Andrzej Kochanowski and Book 3 of The "Iliad" by Jan Kochanowski can be regarded as the genre substitutes. These translations seem to test whether the young Polish poetic language is able to bear the burden of an epic matter. On the other hand, the works of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski on the Latin "Lechias" (the 1st half of the 17th century), which was to present the beginnings of the Polish state, were not completed. Polish Renaissance authors preferred themes from modern or even recent history, choosing "Bellum civile" by Lucan as their general model but they did not refrain from typically heroic means in the presentation of the subject. This is evidenced by such poems as "The Prussian War" (1516) of Joannis Vislicensis or "Radivilias" (1592) of Jan Radwan. The Latin epic works were followed by the vernacular epic in the 17th century, when the historical epic poems of Samuel Twardowski and Wacław Potocki were created, as well as in the 18th century (the example of "The Khotyn War" by Ignacy Krasicki). The publication in 1618 of the translation of Torquata Tasso’s "Jerusalem Delivered" by Piotr Kochanowski introduced to the Polish literature a third variant of an epic poem, which is a combination of a heroic poem and romance motives. The translation gained enormous recognition among literary audiences and was quickly included in the canon of imitated works, but not as a model of an epic, but mainly as a source of ideas and poetic phrases (it was used not only by epic poets). The exception here is the anonymous epos titled "The Siege of Jasna Góra of Częstochowa", whose author spiced the historical action of the recent event with romance themes, an evident reference to the Tasso’s poem. The Polish translation of the Tasso’s masterpiece also contributed to the popularity of the ottava rima as an epic verse from the 2nd half of the 17th century (previously the Polish alexandrine dominated as the equivalent of the ancient hexameter). This verse was used both in the historical and biblical epic poems, striving to face the rhythmic challenge.

Scanty copiers that remained until now and especially booksellers’ inventories the significance of which Staniszewski diminished are made evidence of the reviewer’s stance.
