Annals of Human Genetics, 2011

SummaryPublished data on the association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) ... more SummaryPublished data on the association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene A1298C (rs1801131) polymorphism and male infertility risk are inconclusive. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, a meta‐analysis was performed. In this meta‐analysis, a total of seven case‐control studies including 1633 cases and 1735 controls were selected to evaluate the possible association. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of association in the additive model, dominant model, recessive model, and allele‐frequency genetic model. In the overall analysis, the frequency of the C1298 allele (C vs. A) was significantly associated with susceptibility to male infertility (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.00–1.26). A subgroup analysis of the subjects showed that MTHFR 1298C was associated with significant increased risk of azoospermia in homozygote comparison (CC vs. AA) and recessive mode (CC vs. AA/AC) (OR = 1.66 for ...

The present study was carried out in medical students to determine the Harvard Step Test (HST). There is significant difference in Harvard Index (HI) or Physical Fitness Index (PFI) in male and female students because males are generally more aggressive and accepts challenges more than females, also there is significant difference in Height (Ht) and Weight (Wt) in males and females. So, PFI affected by body size as evidenced in the co-relation PFI with height and weight. Methods: The study was conducted in department of physiology, MNR Medical College, Sangareddy. A total of 133 subjects were selected, of whom 73 were male and 60 were female medical students whose age varied from 17 to 19 years. The subjects selected for this study were medical students admitted for First MBBS Course. The PFI or HI of the subjects was calculated by asking the subject to perform Harvard Step test. Prior to the test, age (Yrs), height (cm) and weight (kg) were recorded. Results: In the present study, the mean Harvard Index or PFI was 83.0101 in males and 60.2425 in females. Mean values of height and weight were 170.5603cms & 56.3219kgs in males and 156.14cms & 49.2Kgs in females respectively. Interpretation & Conclusion: Low mean value of PFI in female subjects compared to male subjects can thus be attributable to their lower body weight and height; also, males are generally more aggressive and accept challenges more than females. This present study is an attempt to modify Harvard step test with classification of score. But for Indians it is necessary to modify the step test because of short stature.

The present study was chosen to determine sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in cigarette smokers and compare it with healthy age matched controls in order to find out what influence does smoking have on baroreceptor sympathetic and parasympathetic control mechanisms and to find out for any co-relation between duration of cigarette smoking and autonomic dysfunction. Materials & Methods: Fifty cigarette smokers and fifty normal, healthy, nonsmokers were selected as age matched controls to study autonomic functions. Sympathetic functions were carried out by Cold Pressor Response test and Hand Grip test. Parasympathetic functions were tested by Determination of Heart Rate with change in posture and Sinus Arrhythmia. Results: Smokers revealed more pronounced rise both in systolic as well as diastolic blood pressure as compared to normal healthy controls during cold pressor test. Smokers revealed more pronounced rise in both SBP and DBP as compared to nonsmokers during hand grip test. There was increased heart rate in initial 10 seconds when there is postural change i.e. lying down to standing in both the groups. There was an increase in heart rate during inspiration and decrease during expiration (sinus arrhythmia) both in smokers and healthy controls. Conclusion: Cigarette smoking affects cardiovascular functions as indicated by rise in blood pressure in smokers than nonsmokers reflects the sensitivity of sympathetic activity to nicotine due to smoking. Thus the study concludes that smoking possibly has an effect on neurocardiovascular regulation system altering the sensitivity of ANS activity in habitual smokers.

An increase in body fat is generally associated with an increase in risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity is further adding the severity. Therefore, any measures that could prevent or delay the development of diabetes are urgently needed. The present study is focused on early detection of the occurrence of Diabetes so that its control can be more effective because of early intervention. Materials & Methods: 50 people with increased blood sugar levels of age group of 16-20 years of both the sexes are selected randomly as subjects and 50 people with normal blood sugar levels are randomly selected as control group . Primary data of all the subjects like name, age, sex, occupation, address etc., are obtained as per the proforma. Calculation of Body Fat Percentage (%BF) involves measuring of ski...

To assess the pulmonary function of an individual, Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) is preferred because it is simple and reliable diagnostic and prognostic test. PEFR is preferred among other pulmonary functions tests because of the advantages like low cost of instrument (Wright’s flow meter), easy to explain the procedure even to the illiterates, easy to use and handle, easy to take the reading. Material & Methods: 150 healthy adults were selected after obtaining informed consent which includes 68 male and 82 female students of Viswabharathi medical college, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, Viswabharathi Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh after obtaining ethical clearance from Institutional Ethical Committee. All the subjects are informed about the procedure and an individual demonstration about...

The thyroid hormones are crucial for normal functioning because of their control over body’s basal metabolic rate, as well as growth, development, and differentiation of many cells/organs in the body. The present study was based on a crosssectional study design carried out at the outpatient department of Maheshwara Medical College & Hospital from January 2017 to July 2018. Serum levels of free thyroxin (FT4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free testosterone, prolactin (PRL), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured using immunoassay commercial kits in both groups. The normal reference ranges for thyroid hormones were as follows: TSH, 0.3 to 5.0 IU/mL and T4, 4.5 to 12.5 g/dL. Erectile dysfunction was evaluated using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire. The results were averaged as (mean ...

Aim: The aim of present study was to evaluate the hematological changes in primary hypertension in Sangareddy, Andhra Pradesh. Materials and Methods: In the present study, a total of 100 patients diagnosed for primary hypertension and 100 normotensive subjects were included. All the participants after taking informed consent were subjected to detailed history and hematological analysis. Students-'t' test was used to find out the significance of differences. P values less than 0.05 was considered the level of significance. Result: It was observed that the mean values of Hemoglobin, Erythrocyte count, Hematocrit, MCH and MCHC were increased in primary hypertension while, the mean levels of MCV were found to be lower in the hypertensive group when compared to normotensive subjects. Conclusion: Hypertension has impact on hematocrit, hemoglobin, RBC count, WBC count and Platelet count which can be used for early detection of hypertensive prone individuals.
