double screening at ACMI, Melbourne I moved to Melbourne from New Zealand just over a week ago and was thrilled to find a double feature of AW's is on this Wednesday at the Australian Centre for Moving Image.Blissfully Yours followed by Tropical Malady.They've titled it the thai new wave... these are the only films showing as part of that (is he the entire Thai new wave??).So glad I held off seeing Blissfully Yours on video in hopes of a chance like this. ShankarThai and foreign filmmakers have trained their camera lenses on the aftermath of the December 26 tsunami, with the results screened last night in Bangkok.The series of 14 short films, ranging from the ghostly to the whimsical and uplifting, were showing at the World Film Festival and would be screened again on the Thai island of Phuket on the first anniversary of the disaster, said festival director Kriengsak Silakong.Phuket, a popular tourist destination, was hard hit by the waves, which killed more than 200,000 people in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr Kriengsak said the tsunami films, commissioned by the Thai government's Ministry of Culture, were "one of the most important highlights" of the festival.**The 11 Thai and three foreign filmmakers include Cannes Film Festival veteran Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose Ghost of Asia is about two children having fun on the beach, with a ghostly figure who seems half-real, half-imaginary.Apichatpong describes the film as "an experimental story about the sea, seen through the eyes of children"."It's a story of fun, happiness, hope, and that's what going to the sea and beach is all about. Mishaps happen, but life goes on," Apichatpong said.**Sompot Chidgasornpongse used his film Andaman to capture the myriad faces of those who still flock to the beaches."I was happy to do the film, as it gave me a chance to visit Phuket after the tsunami," he said."The actor in my film is a kind of guide who travels the beach, meeting and interacting with locals, tourists, kids."He said he was impressed by the resilience of the locals."They were calm and strong, in spite of their losses ... The sea is big and beautiful but at the end, there's rain and storm. It has two sides." |

Thai Airways are having a special deal on airfares in the month of March. Mysterious Objects at the ICA Not too much happening in this community lately, but those in London will know about the current retrospective at the ICA, "Mysterious Objects".
