_1:21 am_[matariki] | Two pieces of very bad news and one piece of good news Very bad news #1:Alexis Tioseco, editor of the wonderful Criticine, and tireless champion of South East Asian cinema, was killed last year. Alexis posted to this group as _fiction_. A eulogy for Alexis and his partner Nika Bohinc can be found here. Apichatpong made this video for him for the Love Letters project:Very bad news #2:The director of Offside and Crimson Gold, Jafar Panahi, is still a prisoner of conscience in Iran and is undergoing torture. He started a hunger strike just over a week ago.[John Torres, Arleen Cuevas, Khavn, Jafar Panahi, Alexis Tioseco, and Raya Martin]Good news:Apichatpong Weerasethakul has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. I assume this means his films will be better distributed from now on. A recent interview with him is here. (2 Comments |Comment on this) |

_3:44 pm_[matariki] | Free Thai Cinema Movement From: Apichatpong Weerasethakul Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2007 00:11:40 -0700Subject: Free Thai Cinema MovementDear All,Regarding the censorship of my film. I am glad in a way that it is leadingto a very important step for our cinema. Please kindly forward to the ones you think have relevant interest in thisissue. Thank you very much.http://www.petitiononline.com/nocut/petition.html---------------Free Thai Cinema Movement PetitionStatement by Apichatpong Weerasethakul*with Bioscope, the Thai Film Foundation, Thai Film Director¹sAssociation, and Alliances.*I am saddened by what has happened to my film. However, this is not thevenue to try to make SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY shown in Thai theaters. Itis not my intention to use this opportunity to promote my work. But, it is time to seriously think about what is going on with ourcensorship laws, so that the next generation of filmmakers will not facethe same problems as us, and so that the Thai audiences can trulyachieve a freedom of choice. It is time we discuss whether all films, before being released, shouldbe seen by the Buddhist council, doctors council, teachers council, labor council, the army, pet lovers group, taxi union, representativesfrom other foreign countries etc? Or, is it easier to turn our nationinto a Fascist state so that we can live in harmony and don¹t have towaste time talking about democracy? The system of the Thai Board of Censors needs to be evaluated. Theirmembers' relevancy and efficiency needs to be questioned, and we shoulddecide whether the laws should be changed.I would like to ask you to reflect on the censorship practices in ourcountry and to provide us with advice athttp://www.petitiononline.com/nocut/petition.htmlLater on, this Petition will be submitted to the Thai government. Yoursupport will be a great contribution to our fight for one of our mostbasic rights - that of freedom.I am grateful for your time and your participation. Thank you very much.Warmest Regards,Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Comment on this) |

_9:16 pm_[matariki] | Thailand's cultural ministry gave 14 filmmakers 100,000 baht each to look at the impact of the tsunamiSouth China Morning Post Friday, October 21, 2005 By Lekha J. ShankarThai and foreign filmmakers have trained their camera lenses on the aftermath of the December 26 tsunami, with the results screened last night in Bangkok. The series of 14 short films, ranging from the ghostly to the whimsical and uplifting, were showing at the World Film Festival and would be screened again on the Thai island of Phuket on the first anniversary of the disaster, said festival director Kriengsak Silakong.Phuket, a popular tourist destination, was hard hit by the waves, which killed more than 200,000 people in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr Kriengsak said the tsunami films, commissioned by the Thai government's Ministry of Culture, were "one of the most important highlights" of the festival.**The 11 Thai and three foreign filmmakers include Cannes Film Festival veteran Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose Ghost of Asia is about two children having fun on the beach, with a ghostly figure who seems half-real, half-imaginary.Apichatpong describes the film as "an experimental story about the sea, seen through the eyes of children"."It's a story of fun, happiness, hope, and that's what going to the sea and beach is all about. Mishaps happen, but life goes on," Apichatpong said.**Sompot Chidgasornpongse used his film Andaman to capture the myriad faces of those who still flock to the beaches."I was happy to do the film, as it gave me a chance to visit Phuket after the tsunami," he said."The actor in my film is a kind of guide who travels the beach, meeting and interacting with locals, tourists, kids."He said he was impressed by the resilience of the locals."They were calm and strong, in spite of their losses ... The sea is big and beautiful but at the end, there's rain and storm. It has two sides." (Comment on this) |

_12:58 pm_[matariki] | community meetup I've noticed a few other lj communities having real life meet-ups, so perhaps it's time to organise one for this group. Does October in Bangkok suit anyone? Thai Airways are having a special deal on airfares in the month of March. [edit: I'm now thinking late June/early July would be a better time as it would coincide with Emirates' cheap airfare deal.] (2 Comments |Comment on this) |
