This requires considerable financial investment in IT, in processes and in people. It might be expected that there would be a concern to ensure that performance measurement systems are capable of justifying these investments, and of evaluating their worth once implemented. The paper describes research aimed at determining the exact nature of such e-business performance measurement systems and the benefits that accrue from their use. The research uses a case study methodology to report the performance measurement practices of twelve potentially exemplar organisations that have made efforts to develop distinctive performance metrics for e-business. Qualitative data was collected from interviews with key informants from each organisation. Additional data came from company documents. The cases reveal a variety of approaches to e-business performance measurement, with no common framework apparent. Wh...

This paper reports on research aimed at operationalising the Hayes and Wheelwright 4Stage model. ... more This paper reports on research aimed at operationalising the Hayes and Wheelwright 4Stage model. This model has classic status in operations management but seems little tested in practice. A questionnaire derived from the model was administered in a large-scale postal survey of managers in a variety of UK manufacturing and service organisations. Analysis of the responses indicates that managers seem to have difficulty in classifying the strategic role played by their operations in an internally consistent and coherent manner. Although the questionnaire itself may have shortcomings, the results question the utility of the model and raise concerns about its validity.

The objective of this survey was to build a snapshot of the state of play of the information and communications technology (ICT) use by SMEs in economically significant sectors in this region. The sectors chosen were as follows: food processing, transport and logistics, media and internet services. More specifically, the survey was intended to answer the following questions: what types of ICT are in use by SMEs in this region, what prevents and facilitates the adoption and use of ICT amongst these firms, and where do SMEs acquire information on ICT related issues. Our survey suggests that most SMEs in the southeast of England are in general positively inclined towards adoption and use of ICT. However, this adoption and use of ICT is mainly focused on operational matters with few extensions into potential strategic use of such technologies in...

This paper explores patterns of adoption and use of information and communications technology (IC... more This paper explores patterns of adoption and use of information and communications technology (ICT) by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the southwest London and Thames Valley region of England. The paper presents preliminary results of a survey of around 400 SMEs drawn from four economically significant sectors in the region: food processing, transport and logistics, media and Internet services. The main objectives of the study were to explore ICT adoption and use patterns by SMEs, to identify factors enabling or inhibiting the successful adoption and use of ICT, and to explore the effectiveness of government policy mechanisms at national and regional levels. While our main result indicates a generally favourable attitude to ICT amongst the SMEs surveyed, it also suggests a failure to recognise ICT’s strategic potential. A surprising result was the overwhelming ignorance of regional, national and European Union wide policy initiatives to support SMEs. This strikes at the...

Yet progress in many e-businesses is hampered because of an apparent mismatch between their business and operations strategies. Knowledge and Process Management, 2002

ABSTRACT This paper develops a theoretical framework for use in research investigating the impact... more ABSTRACT This paper develops a theoretical framework for use in research investigating the impact of e-commerce on the management of internal business processes. Managing the business processes that facilitate order fulfilment and delivery of goods and services supplied to customers is the prime concern of operations management. Despite the growing importance of e-commerce to organizations of all types, e-operations is a neglected area of study. Yet many of the problems associated with e-commerce have centred on an inability to ‘deliver the goods’, often literally. Effective and efficient operations management is as important in e-commerce as it is in traditional business. The framework, developed by integrating literature from the academic traditions of operations management and information systems, identifies three key issues: business process integration (the extent to which business processes for clicks and mortar e-commerce are integrated with those for bricks and mortar), information systems integration (the extent to which intra- and inter-organizational information systems are capable of communicating and sharing information with each other) and the operating context (types of customers, the e-commerce business model and organizational factors). The framework is being used in case study-based research that aims to describe and model current practice in organizations engaged in e-commerce. The paper describes how the framework was applied in three financial services companies. The framework proved to be a useful basis for the research, enabling key emergent themes to be identified. However, in order to fully explain all of the research findings it was subsequently necessary to modify the framework to take account of the strategic context of each organization. The modified framework will be used as the basis of further case studies being conducted in organizations in other sectors. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
