Almost Christmas!! [21 Nov 2005|02:50pm]
http://www.whitewaterhelmet.com/history.htmlIf any of you are a kayaker or into whitewater sports of any kind-- or know of people who are that you want to buy presents for-- this is the perfect gift!! After my brother Lucas' kayaking accident which resulted in his untimely death, we found out that if he had been wearing a helmet that protected more of his forehead (not yet created, mind you) he wouldn't have been knocked out by the rock, and would still be alive today. Yes, I realize that there is a time for all of us to go- and it was just Lucas' time. However, realizing the inferiority of whitewater helmets on the market at that time, my father set out to change things. He and my engineer brother Nick (who is also one of the top kayakers in the world) joined forces with Johns Hopkins University to create the safest whitewater helmet ever made!! Plus, it is also more aesthetically pleasing than other helmets, if I may so myself. Anyway, I was talking on one of my friends' journals about it, and figured, why not share it with everyone!! It is definitely a great gift option. Just go to the website (above center) and you can read all about it, and also choose from a variety of colors and stuff like that. I am so proud of my dad and brother for finally getting this thing off the ground! There has been an amazing reception so far, as it has even won various awards in kayaking magazines like Paddler. It is just nice to know that the needless fatality of Lucas' case (on a river that he had paddled soooo many times before, and wasn't even that difficult for his skill level), can be avoided for those who wear this helmet :) -SarNickMy brother Nick :)

I'm a guide [21 Nov 2005|10:03am]
[ **mood** | blank ] Hi, I realize that I have no kayaking skills what-so-ever, but being a rafting guide, I feel that I should be able to share my experiences as well..I spend all my free time playboating, and finding ways to spend my monies on white water gear. Now being winter I'm extremely jealous of those who are still able to be on the water. I spent 6 weeks rafting the gauley, and the first time I had ever been there was during the spring, in a ducky..needless to say my poor ducky-ing skills lead me to a near death experience and the laughter of my peers, plus bruises and scrapes. Well now I've run out of things to say, so thank you for reading?

It is in Big Flat, way out in the boonies of Northern California. Deemed by locals as the Whitewater Capitol of the North State.....Im wondering if anybody has ever played on the Trinity River?

Hey peopleMy names Ria and I'm 16, I've been kayaking for about 4 years now and love whitewater not theres much around in east England, so we normally travel to wales or the french Alps. Anyway some more info about me, I'm a 4 star kayaker and and doing my level two training but can't do the assesment till i'm 18. I used to paddle a riot booster but it went rusty and was uncomfortable so i got myself a lovely liquid logic trigger, which I love.So anyway it's good to find a kayaking community, and if there are any other UK paddlers around leave me a comment or somethingXXX

hi there, peeps :) i'm a boater up in minnesota, where the creeks up north run for approx. 2 weeks in the spring. i used to race slalom for several years, but now i like creekin best. also extreme downriver races are fun. i'm kinda old-school in that i prefer carving type play on huge glassy surf waves and pirouttes and enders to cartwheels and flatspins(tho that can be fun, too). i'd like to get into some expedition paddling. i also really wanna run the zambezi (and i may be going to africa in the fall, so it might actually work out).i've moved around a lot since (and during) college, so it's been hard to get into paddling communities every time i move. when i lived in bellingham, wa for a bit i had a group of friends i ran stuff with and trusted and knew well, and i kinda miss that. i also miss the beautiful creeks up there, lined with pines and mossy rocks. maybe i'll move back someday.

hey guys,I'm new to the community and I thought i'd introduce myself.. I've been kayaking for about half a year now, living and going to school in Boone, NC and I go pretty much any time possible whenever the weather allows (and even sometimes when it doesn't). I like to paddle at least III/IV/ stuff, and am looking to get into more Vs next semester. I enjoy creeking much more than any other aspect of boating, although messing around with trying some cartwheels in Jaws on the Noli is always fun. I usually paddle my session, unless I'm creeking or running heavier stuff, in which case I usually borrow a boat from friends. I'm looking at the possibility of buying a used micro or huka within the next week or so. In the summers I work as a whitwater raft guide. Sometimes people tag along and take pictures.. there's a couple pictures posts scattered throughout my journal with some boating pictures in 'em if any of you guys are intersted. anyways, always good to see some fresh boating faces.. glad to be a part of this community!-rio

Right ON! [14 Apr 2005|03:48pm]
Just saw the post by robinhoodvandal in the Kayaking community. About dang time! Plenty of whitewater buffs in the Seattle Area, but now that I'm an hour south, I'm not finding people to paddle with. Anyone in Olympia? Anyone?Anyway, howdy, here's pictures of Skykomish & Wentachee runs if you're interested: http://www.sarmonster.net/Hobbies.htmlI'm also assistant manager of the MSExtreme community, for those that enjoy not just whitewater, but scaring the crap out of yourselves in general.I'm one of those dorks that runs big water in a Pyrahna Micro 250, but mostly because its one of the few boats that will fit my fat butt. I love it, though.

Newbie [14 Apr 2005|04:57pm]
Hey all, I just joined and have been in "Kayaking" for awhile. I haven't been out as much as I'd like since most of my time is spent with my 3 1/2 year old Tyler and twin 1 year old girls Rian & Victoria. I'm in the Coast Guard and got the morale committee to spring for some Perception Acadia 12'6" and have done some kayaking in the LI sound in the New Haven area of CT. Going to try to do a bit of calmer river runs on the Delaware back home in NY and maybe find some people to point me to nice spots for whitewater in the NE. Missing the Rogue in OR where I met my wife and rafted a few times...kayaking is still new to me and I'm hoping to get out as much as I can.

Suggestion and a question [12 Apr 2005|04:42am]
[ **mood** | curious ] Suggestion:Has anyone advertised this community in kayaking? That community seems to be filled with mostly flat water posts, so the whitewater paddlers in it would probably jump at this community. It could increase our numbers a bit...I was going to post somethign in there, but since I just joined this community recently I wanted to make sure someone hadn't already done it.and an actual question:I've never had to outfit a boat before. I've always rented or borrowed boats, so now I'm kinda at a loss as to what to do with my new-to-me Wavesport XXX. I want to get my equiment used and am looking on message boards and am going to a gearswap on the 23rd. I don't really know what i'm looking for though when it comes to floatation for my boat. I've never paid attention to it before. What should I get and where should it go?

Gotta Yak! [10 Apr 2005|08:30pm]
[ **mood** | excited ] I got a Kayak! It's a WaveSport XXX playboat, blue and purple, low volume, about 7.75 feet, narrow and light as can be. I love it! I don't have a spray skirt, paddle, floatation or anything yet, but I'm going to a kayak swap with my mom on the 23rd so I'm going to look around there. The helmet is going to be the hard thing to find cheaply as I have a teeny tiny head. I had to buy a kids' helmet for snowboarding. I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new and expensive one in order to get one that fits. Now I need to practice on the pond and get a good roll in this boat (never rolled a playboat before), so I don't need a helmet (or even a PFD should I feel like making things difficult) right away, but I def need one before I take it out on a river!I plan on looking on BoaterTalk too to see what I can find.Oh I'm so excited! haha"I gotta yak, I gotta yak, I gotta yak, hey, hey hey hey!" *a la Little Rascals*edit:sorry bout the html issues. should be fixed. didn't know I was in wysiwyg mode.

questions about rivers on east coast [06 Apr 2005|06:46pm]
Hey everybody, I'm a Eugene, OR boater, and I am soon to be a Philadelphia boater (going to University of Pennsylvania next year). I know absolutely nothing about rivers on the east coast, and I noticed the majority of you are east coast boaters. I was wondering what everybody would suggest for me back there.I'm a semi-solid class IV boater, been doing it for years. I like any kind of kayaking, but I am partial to a good playspot. So anybody who has any ideas for rivers near Philly (or maybe even is looking for a boating buddie around there :-D) please respond.

Hello! [06 Apr 2005|12:39am]
[ **mood** | dorky ] Just found this community, so I thought I'd introduce myself. :)I've done some kayaking here and there, but I haven't had a chance to really get into it. I just moved to Charlottesville, VA though and have a great deal more access to places to paddle than I did before. I'm hoping to really get into it this spring and summer. I have a solid roll with or wihtout a paddle and want a chance to use it! :)I'm looking to get a used boat and am wondering if anyone has any recomendations. I've paddled an RPM a bazillion times before and it fit me pretty well, but I'd like some suggestions of others to try. Especially lighter ones that play a bit better. I'm a small person, so 40 pounds is a lot to lug around. I'm a beginner for the most part though so I don't want to get one that is too difficult to control either...so anyway, hi!

new boater.. [31 Mar 2005|11:59pm]
Hey guys.I'm located in MD.. just below Baltimore. I've been kayaking since I was 13 I've not been able to boat as much the past couple of years as I wanted too. This spring that changes!!I'm picking up a Necky Vibe soon.http://www.necky.com/vibe.htmI'm looking for other boaters in the Baltimore area. Maybe we can car pool to playspots on the potomac or out to W.VA this summer. Any other boaters in the area hit me up I'm all ears! Here's a list of rivers I've paddled:New River (by my house, in SW VA alot of good play spots and fun runs)New River Gorge (lots)Upper Gauley (twice)Watauga Gorge (about 3 times, 3rd time I made it without almost dying.)Lots of Little creeks by where I grew up (Independence, VA), I LOVE creeking, alot.Nantahalla, Ocoee, Nolichucky (quite a few times, once at about 30,000 cfs it was nuts I swam 1/4 mile)Maury, James..that's all I can remember right now. I'm not making the list for 1 upsmanship most of the time I was in quite over my head! I hope to find some fun paddlers locally here. Also, I'm looking for a slightly used paddle, because I'm poor.

I'm New [22 Mar 2005|04:41pm]
I'm a white water rafting guide in Kentucky with a Wave Sport Score Kayak. I love being on the river and I wouldn't trade it for the world and living here where I do works out nice because Kentucky is kinda the center of TN, NC, Va, and WV so it works out nicely to get access to all those places living right on I-75. Anyone who wants to talk about paddling in general I love the conversation and to share and hear stories about trips.
