This study aims to determine the type of equivalence contained in the news translation of VICE In... more This study aims to determine the type of equivalence contained in the news translation of VICE Indonesia YouTube channel and its impact on the translation quality. The data was taken from the subtitle transcript of VICE Indonesia. This research is conducted with qualitative descriptive method. Several theories are elaborated within this research namely, Nida & Taber theory of equivalence (cited in Panou, 2013, p.2) and the equivalence theory of Baker (2018), and the adopted model of translation quality assessment from Nababan et al. (2012). The results of this study showed that there are six types of equivalence found within the subtitles: formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence, equivalence at word level, equivalence above word level, grammatical equivalence, and pragmatic equivalence. Grammatical equivalence is the type that dominates the overall data. This paper focuses on the user perception of their experience in using the auto-translate feature... more This paper focuses on the user perception of their experience in using the auto-translate feature on social media. A mixed method is employed in this study to gain quantitative and qualitative results and provide a more in-depth understanding of the analysis, with an online questionnaire as the research instrument. In order to reach a broader audience, snowball sampling is used since there are no specific criteria for the subject target. The majority of the respondents are women with bachelor's degrees aged 17-28. There are three aspects of assessment on the questionnaire following Nababan’s theory: accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The findings showed that the result of the auto-translate feature on social media has good accuracy, moderate readability, and is very acceptable. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of this feature are lack of context understanding, mistranslation due to wrong diction, and grammar updates.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui representasi Demokrasi Pancasila dalam pidato Presiden Jokowi dan juga untuk memahami kontribusi wacana dan faktor sosial makna leksikal demokrasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Presiden Jokowi menggambarkan demokrasi dalam tiga tahap yakni denotasi (5 data) dan konotasi (3 data) dalam pidato kampanyenya. Ada beberapa topik yang mewakili demokrasi seperti tentang ekonomi, kesehatan, pendidikan. Data-data tersebut disampaikan secara denotatif dan konotatif. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa makna leksikal adalah aspek linguistik yang tepat untuk menemukan ideologi kandidat dalam wacana terutama dalam pidato kampanye politik. Indonesia is in one of the world's most natural disaster-prone areas and is at risk to multiple h... more Indonesia is in one of the world's most natural disaster-prone areas and is at risk to multiple hazard. The National Disaster Management Agency or Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) records that the number of natural disasters during 2019 is 3,271 events excluding humancaused and other incidents of mass trauma. Foreigners from various countries have been offering partnership in volunteering for disaster recovery, risk reduction, preparedness, and financial activities. In 2004, deathly Tsunami struck Indonesia and more than 4000 foreign volunteers participated for the disaster recovery. Despite growing interest in international volunteerism, Indonesian volunteers face a challenge in language and culture differences. A study conducted by Talarski (2014) investigated cross cultural immersion in Tanzania and Zambia found that foreign volunteers have greater understanding of the local culture because the local volunteers welcomed them as the part of their community. It shows that well preparedness of the local brought impacts to culture immersion. Indonesian volunteers should be ready in terms of partnership to foreign nations especially in communication and culture immersion. To overcome the problems, English and cross culture literacy are essential to put into practical to fill the gap due to language and culture differences. Thus, this paper is intended to offer literacy as a breakthrough toward disaster mitigation during the actions. Therefore, English and cross culture literacy are needed to understand and to practice before the voluntary mission.

The current language phenomenon is developing under the influence of situations and conditions th... more The current language phenomenon is developing under the influence of situations and conditions that humans always execute, whether consciously or unconsciously. It is undoubtedly that the impact of human behavior on their language system and language choice leads to an inseparable bond between the former and its respective socio-cultural environment. This study aims to acknowledge the manifestation of language choice performed by the community of Tourist Village Pujon Kidul, Malang when they interact online, especially in the domain of social networking. The method utilized in this study relies on a qualitative design to portray the general depiction of a certain occurrence without any given treatment. The technique used is threefold; interviewing, note-taking, and recording to document the community interaction within the domain of online or social media, such as Facebook and Instagram administered by Komunitas Desa Wisata Pujon Kidul Malang (Tourist Village Pujon Kidul Malang Community). What motivates such an approach is the concern to prevent Covid-19 from worsening should there be field research, therefore online-based research data are deemed significant. This study targets the fundamental policy of the use of language in a specific community within the domain of online media while taking into account the values of local culture. The result shows that the manifestation of language choice portrayed in social media such as Facebook and Instagram are of four categories: Indonesian, Javanese, English, and a mix of the three languages; Indonesian-Javanese, Indonesian-English, and Javanese-Indonesian. The research method using quasi-experimental design with the Times-Series Design with Control Group. The data analysis by using one way ANOVA test. The results showed that the TOEFL test treatment, namely the pre-test and post-test in the control class and the experimental class in the PBL model had differences. The average pre-test TOEFL score in the experimental class was 344.71 with score range from 300-397 and standard deviation of 29.386. The average post-test TOEFL score in the experimental class was 360.83 with score range from 303-400 and standard deviation of 24.146. Learning Based on PBL can improve student learning outcomes, the p-score at PBL was 0.026. Penelitian ini merupakan analisis tindak tutur dengan subyek Sakakibara Kouichi dalam novel Anoth... more Penelitian ini merupakan analisis tindak tutur dengan subyek Sakakibara Kouichi dalam novel Another. Sistem analisis dilakukan dengan cara melakukan spesifikasi dengan memilih dialog yang mengandung tindak tutur langsung literal, kemudian melakukan identifikasi tindak tutur ilokusi di dalamnya. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan dari 85 data yang terkumpul, 81 data merupakan tindak tutur langsung literal. Lebih dalam lagi, jenis ilokusi di dalamnya terdiri dari 41 data ilokusi asertif, 40 data ilokusi direktif., 2 data 2 ilokusi ekspresif, dan 1 data ilokusi komisif. Dari hasil tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa menjabarkan tindak tutur dalam tindak tutur memungkinkan dan dapat dijadikan sebagai cara untuk melakukan spesifikasi data bagi penelitian berikutnya.

Tokoh masyarakat dan penggerak usaha wisata berhasil mengajak masyarakat lokal untuk mengembangkan berbagai paket wisata yang fokus menawarkan pengalaman hidup di kampung kepada wisatawan. Namun, terjadinya pandemi menjadikan usaha wisata terhenti. Inisiatif untuk membangkitkan kembali partisipasi aktif masyarakat dusun hanya bertumpu kepada tokoh masyarakat dan inisiator kampung wisata. Para pemuda belum memiliki kemauan dan insiatif dalam melakukan promosi untuk membangkitkan dan meningkatkan skala usaha wisata. Pemahaman dan pengetahuan para pemuda kampung tentang prinsip dasar usaha wisata belum memadai dan merata. Untuk membantu mengurangi kekhawatiran tokoh masyarakat dan penggerak usaha wisata tentang keberlangsungan usaha (business longevity) Kampung Wisata Kungkuk, pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk mengenalkan prinsip dasar usaha wisata berbasis konsep business model canvas (BMC) kepada para pemuda desa pelaku usaha wisata. Dengan menerapkan metode Participatory Action Research (PAR), para pemuda diajak untuk berdiskusi aktif menentukan sembilan unsur business canvas. Hasil diskusi tersebut menjadi dasar identifikasi kekuatan (strength), kelemahan (weakness), kesempatan (opportunity) dan ancaman (threat) dan selanjutnya menjadi data untuk pengembangan strategi bisnis. Tim pengabdian membantu menerjemahkan berbagai usulan pemuda desa menjadi empat strategi pengembangan bisnis, yaitu competitive, invasive, diversification, dan defensive strategies. Salah satu rekomendasi kepada para pemuda kampung wisata adalah memperkuat komitmen dan mengembangkan kesepakatan bersama tentang langkah apa yang perlu diambil untuk menjaga dinamika dan kelangsungan usaha Kampung Wisata Kungkuk.

Regarding this, the present study is intended to find the correlation between intelligence EFL proficiency and critical thinking skills (CTS) among pre-advanced EFL learners in the Faculty of Cultural Studies. Thirty five respondents are taken as the samples of the study. All of the respondents are further being given a test on critical thinking skills in reading and a test on EFL proficiency respectively. This research examines the correlation between EFL students' epistemic beliefs, the way they defi... more This research examines the correlation between EFL students' epistemic beliefs, the way they define learning and how they learn English, and English proficiency to predict human resources' quality with divergent multicultural exposure. Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL) is chosen to represent English proficiency, mandatory for more than 90% of job posts in Indonesia. The higher level of epistemic beliefs should predict the high scores of TOEFL. This paper is aimed at analyzing and introduce the concept of epistemic beliefs and the planning of high quality human resources at University level, and is an effort to reflect on the importance of epistemic beliefs for formulating learning outcomes for English department. Major findings indicate epistemic beliefs are prominent grounds under the development of classroom level curriculum, as students are exposed with various multicultural background. This paper presents recommendations for curriculum reference and teaching instructions, teacher education and further studies.

This study aims to find out the translation strategies used by the English Education students from Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) in translating a news article. The translation strategies used by the students are categorized based on the Baker's taxonomy. The result shows that the students employ all of the eight translation strategies from Baker's taxonomy in translating the news article. The three most used translation strategies are translation by using a more general word (95%), paraphrasing using related words (75%), cultural submission and omission (73%). On the contrary, the least used translation strategy is translation by illustration (31%). From the result of the study, it is suggested that researchers interested in translation can conduct more research about the students' translation in a deeper and more specific analysis.

Dakon, one of the name of traditional game from Java, becomes the point of discussion in this paper. Dakon is made of wood or plastic with fourteen pits filled with particles like tamarine seeds, snail cover or small stones. This game can be played by two players facing each other by filling the particles to each pit. In the last stopped stone, the student should see the letter printed in the pit and then start spelling the letter, pronounce the word and read the usage of the word in a simple sentence provided. This part is played again and again until the particles are empty. This paper aims at designing a traditional game, dakon, to learn pronunciation and vocabulary. This game is designed for young learners (elementary school students) who willingly learn English in pairs. Besides learning English, this game also can develop the learners' social interaction with friends at similar ages. This is a Design Based Research by designing art concept. The result shows that the Elementary school students enjoy learning English using this game.

Issues related to the need of English at higher education continue to be a discussion among schol... more Issues related to the need of English at higher education continue to be a discussion among scholars. Many believe that there is a positive relationship between English language skills of university students and their academic performance, and that English language skills are highly valued as a graduate attribute for employability. However, there are still few actions taken to gain information regarding which specific English language skills needed by educators and academic support staff. Universitas Brawijaya (UB) as one of the prominent higher education institutions in Indonesia is continuously taking actions to keep improving the quality of its graduates. One of the actions is to help its students to have a decent level of English language skills in order to help them to be ready to compete in work market that is going global. To reveal English language skills needed by bachelor graduates of the university as well as the reasons behind the need, sets of questionnaire were distributed to the educators in this case represented by the deans and academic support staff and the heads of academic support units both in the faculty and university level. The data from the questionnaires were then analyzed qualitatively. The findings of this study demonstrated that the educators need Reading and Writing skills more than the other two skills. This finding supports the idea that reading and writing skills are desperately needed to increase the number of publication in UB. Different from this result, the academic support staff perception on the need of English for the employees is on speaking skills. They think that speaking skills are the most needed skills for the employees to be able to handle the guest, and as a speaker of the units.

This research aims at investigating the correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings in Indonesian. This study is designed to investigate whether there is a correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings by Indonesian people aged 18 to 34. The design of this research is a correlation. The population of the study was Indonesian social media users aged 18 to 34 (N=196). Snowball sampling was employed to decide samples of study. In order to get the data, this study used the questionnaire as an instrument. There is a significant correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings in Indonesian r = .286, p<0.05.

The National Disaster Management Agency or Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) records that the number of natural disasters during 2019 is 3,271 events excluding humancaused and other incidents of mass trauma. Foreigners from various countries have been offering partnership in volunteering for disaster recovery, risk reduction, preparedness, and financial activities. In 2004, deathly Tsunami struck Indonesia and more than 4000 foreign volunteers participated for the disaster recovery. Despite growing interest in international volunteerism, Indonesian volunteers face a challenge in language and culture differences. A study conducted by Talarski (2014) investigated cross cultural immersion in Tanzania and Zambia found that foreign volunteers have greater understanding of the local culture because the local volunteers welcomed them as the part of their community. It shows that well preparedness of the local brought impacts to culture immersion. Indonesian volunteers should be ready in terms of partnership to foreign nations especially in communication and culture immersion. To overcome the problems, English and cross culture literacy are essential to put into practical to fill the gap due to language and culture differences. Thus, this paper is intended to offer literacy as a breakthrough toward disaster mitigation during the actions. Therefore, English and cross culture literacy are needed to understand and to practice before the voluntary mission.

It is undoubtedly that the impact of human behavior on their language system and language choice leads to an inseparable bond between the former and its respective socio-cultural environment. This study aims to acknowledge the manifestation of language choice performed by the community of Tourist Village Pujon Kidul, Malang when they interact online, especially in the domain of social networking. The method utilized in this study relies on a qualitative design to portray the general depiction of a certain occurrence without any given treatment. The technique used is threefold; interviewing, note-taking, and recording to document the community interaction within the domain of online or social media, such as Facebook and Instagram administered by Komunitas Desa Wisata Pujon Kidul Malang (Tourist Village Pujon Kidul Malang Community). What motivates such an approach is the concern to prevent Covid-19 from worsening should there be field research, therefore online-based research data are deemed significant. This study targets the fundamental policy of the use of language in a specific community within the domain of online media while taking into account the values of local culture. The result shows that the manifestation of language choice portrayed in social media such as Facebook and Instagram are of four categories: Indonesian, Javanese, English, and a mix of the three languages; Indonesian-Javanese, Indonesian-English, and Javanese-Indonesian. The research method using quasi-experimental design with the Times-Series Design with Control Group. The data analysis by using one way ANOVA test. The results showed that the TOEFL test treatment, namely the pre-test and post-test in the control class and the experimental class in the PBL model had differences. The average pre-test TOEFL score in the experimental class was 344.71 with score range from 300-397 and standard deviation of 29.386. The average post-test TOEFL score in the experimental class was 360.83 with score range from 303-400 and standard deviation of 24.146. Learning Based on PBL can improve student learning outcomes, the p-score at PBL was 0.026. Penelitian ini merupakan analisis tindak tutur dengan subyek Sakakibara Kouichi dalam novel Anoth... more Penelitian ini merupakan analisis tindak tutur dengan subyek Sakakibara Kouichi dalam novel Another. Sistem analisis dilakukan dengan cara melakukan spesifikasi dengan memilih dialog yang mengandung tindak tutur langsung literal, kemudian melakukan identifikasi tindak tutur ilokusi di dalamnya. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan dari 85 data yang terkumpul, 81 data merupakan tindak tutur langsung literal. Lebih dalam lagi, jenis ilokusi di dalamnya terdiri dari 41 data ilokusi asertif, 40 data ilokusi direktif., 2 data 2 ilokusi ekspresif, dan 1 data ilokusi komisif. Dari hasil tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa menjabarkan tindak tutur dalam tindak tutur memungkinkan dan dapat dijadikan sebagai cara untuk melakukan spesifikasi data bagi penelitian berikutnya.

Tokoh masyarakat dan penggerak usaha wisata berhasil mengajak masyarakat lokal untuk mengembangkan berbagai paket wisata yang fokus menawarkan pengalaman hidup di kampung kepada wisatawan. Namun, terjadinya pandemi menjadikan usaha wisata terhenti. Inisiatif untuk membangkitkan kembali partisipasi aktif masyarakat dusun hanya bertumpu kepada tokoh masyarakat dan inisiator kampung wisata. Para pemuda belum memiliki kemauan dan insiatif dalam melakukan promosi untuk membangkitkan dan meningkatkan skala usaha wisata. Pemahaman dan pengetahuan para pemuda kampung tentang prinsip dasar usaha wisata belum memadai dan merata. Untuk membantu mengurangi kekhawatiran tokoh masyarakat dan penggerak usaha wisata tentang keberlangsungan usaha (business longevity) Kampung Wisata Kungkuk, pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk mengenalkan prinsip dasar usaha wisata berbasis konsep business model canvas (BMC) kepada para pemuda desa pelaku usaha wisata. Dengan menerapkan metode Participatory Action Research (PAR), para pemuda diajak untuk berdiskusi aktif menentukan sembilan unsur business canvas. Hasil diskusi tersebut menjadi dasar identifikasi kekuatan (strength), kelemahan (weakness), kesempatan (opportunity) dan ancaman (threat) dan selanjutnya menjadi data untuk pengembangan strategi bisnis. Tim pengabdian membantu menerjemahkan berbagai usulan pemuda desa menjadi empat strategi pengembangan bisnis, yaitu competitive, invasive, diversification, dan defensive strategies. Salah satu rekomendasi kepada para pemuda kampung wisata adalah memperkuat komitmen dan mengembangkan kesepakatan bersama tentang langkah apa yang perlu diambil untuk menjaga dinamika dan kelangsungan usaha Kampung Wisata Kungkuk.

This research examines the correlation between EFL students' epistemic beliefs, the way they defi... more This research examines the correlation between EFL students' epistemic beliefs, the way they define learning and how they learn English, and English proficiency to predict human resources' quality with divergent multicultural exposure. Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL) is chosen to represent English proficiency, mandatory for more than 90% of job posts in Indonesia. The higher level of epistemic beliefs should predict the high scores of TOEFL. This paper is aimed at analyzing and introduce the concept of epistemic beliefs and the planning of high quality human resources at University level, and is an effort to reflect on the importance of epistemic beliefs for formulating learning outcomes for English department. Major findings indicate epistemic beliefs are prominent grounds under the development of classroom level curriculum, as students are exposed with various multicultural background. This paper presents recommendations for curriculum reference and teaching instructions, teacher education and further studies.

This study aims to find out the translation strategies used by the English Education students from Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) in translating a news article. The translation strategies used by the students are categorized based on the Baker's taxonomy. The result shows that the students employ all of the eight translation strategies from Baker's taxonomy in translating the news article. The three most used translation strategies are translation by using a more general word (95%), paraphrasing using related words (75%), cultural submission and omission (73%). On the contrary, the least used translation strategy is translation by illustration (31%). From the result of the study, it is suggested that researchers interested in translation can conduct more research about the students' translation in a deeper and more specific analysis.

Dakon, one of the name of traditional game from Java, becomes the point of discussion in this paper. Dakon is made of wood or plastic with fourteen pits filled with particles like tamarine seeds, snail cover or small stones. This game can be played by two players facing each other by filling the particles to each pit. In the last stopped stone, the student should see the letter printed in the pit and then start spelling the letter, pronounce the word and read the usage of the word in a simple sentence provided. This part is played again and again until the particles are empty. This paper aims at designing a traditional game, dakon, to learn pronunciation and vocabulary. This game is designed for young learners (elementary school students) who willingly learn English in pairs. Besides learning English, this game also can develop the learners' social interaction with friends at similar ages. This is a Design Based Research by designing art concept. The result shows that the Elementary school students enjoy learning English using this game.

Many believe that there is a positive relationship between English language skills of university students and their academic performance, and that English language skills are highly valued as a graduate attribute for employability. However, there are still few actions taken to gain information regarding which specific English language skills needed by educators and academic support staff. Universitas Brawijaya (UB) as one of the prominent higher education institutions in Indonesia is continuously taking actions to keep improving the quality of its graduates. One of the actions is to help its students to have a decent level of English language skills in order to help them to be ready to compete in work market that is going global. To reveal English language skills needed by bachelor graduates of the university as well as the reasons behind the need, sets of questionnaire were distributed to the educators in this case represented by the deans and academic support staff and the heads of academic support units both in the faculty and university level. The data from the questionnaires were then analyzed qualitatively. The findings of this study demonstrated that the educators need Reading and Writing skills more than the other two skills. This finding supports the idea that reading and writing skills are desperately needed to increase the number of publication in UB. Different from this result, the academic support staff perception on the need of English for the employees is on speaking skills. They think that speaking skills are the most needed skills for the employees to be able to handle the guest, and as a speaker of the units.

This research aims at investigating the correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings in Indonesian. This study is designed to investigate whether there is a correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings by Indonesian people aged 18 to 34. The design of this research is a correlation. The population of the study was Indonesian social media users aged 18 to 34 (N=196). Snowball sampling was employed to decide samples of study. In order to get the data, this study used the questionnaire as an instrument. There is a significant correlation between social media access intensity and the use of English borrowings in Indonesian r = .286, p<0.05.
