These methods can act as a basic tool for the quality evaluation of herbal plant materials. Different parameters of standardization are the fundamental tool for evaluating and assuring the quality of the herbal plant material and its products. Thi...

RECENT ADVANCES IN HERBAL DRUG STANDARDIZATION – A REVIEW

Recently peoples are getting attracted towards herbal medicines due to many advantages. Herbal formulations have reached extensive acceptability as therapeutic agents for several diseases. Although, most of these applications are unorthodox, it is however a known fact that over 80% of the world population depends on herbal medicines and product for healthy living. This rise in the use of herbal product has also given rise to various forms of abuse and adulteration of the products leading to consumers’ and manufacturers’ disappointment and in some instances fatal consequences. The development of authentic analytical methods which can reliably profile the phytochemical composition, including quantitative analyses of marker/bioactive compounds and other major constituents, is a major challenge to scientists. Standardization is an important step for the establishment of a consistent biological activity, a consistent chemical profile, or simply a quality assurance program for production ...

RECENT ADVANCES IN HERBAL FORMULATION STANDARDIZATION -A REVIEW

Recently peoples are getting attracted towards traditional medicines due to many advantages. Herbal formulations have reached substantial acceptability as therapeutic agents for a number of diseases. Although, most of these applications are rare, it is however a known fact that over 80% of the community depends on Ayurveda and herbal medicines for healthy lifestyle. This raise in the use of herbal product has also given rise to various forms of misuse and falsification of the formulation leading to consumer's and manufacturer's despondency and in some cases harmful effects.(1) The development of genuine analytical techniques which can reliably profile the phytochemical configuration, including quantitative analysis of marker/Biologically active compounds and other major constituents, is a major challenge to Researcher. Standardization is an important step in creating a consonant biological activity, a standardized chemical profile or simply a quality assurance system for herbal Formulation manufacturing. In present review article various traditional methods as well as conventional approaches are discussed. Recent advancements includes DNA fingerprinting, sophisticated analytical techniques, Chromatographic Markers Analysis etc are observed. Sophisticated Analytical Techniques and Chromatographic technique contributions towards standardization of polyherbal formulation is also reported.

Current Trends in Standardization of Herbal Formulations

2016

Herbal medicines are not a simple task since many factors influence the biological efficacy and reproducible therapeutic effect. Standardized herbal products of consistent quality and containing well-defined constituents are required for reliable clinical trials and to provide consistent beneficial therapeutic effects. Pharmacological properties of an herbal formulation depend on phytochemical constituents present therein. Many cutting-edge analytical technologies have been introduced to evaluate the quality of medicinal plants and significant amount of measurement data has been produced. Development of authentic analytical methods, which can reliably profile the phytochemical composition, including quantitative analyses of market/bioactive compounds and other major constituents, is a major challenge to scientists. In view of the growing interest in herbal medicines, methods for standardization of herbal drugs are developed and used in different formulation

A Comprehensive Review On Herbal Drug Standardization

American Journal of PharmTech Research

Now days more importance has been given to use medicinal plant products in healthcare system.it fulfills worldwide need of alternative medicine so traditional systems of medicine becomes more and more popular. It involves Proper combination of modern scientific techniques and traditional knowledge. The quality of herbal products is checked through stability testing studies which depends on various factors, such as temperature, humidity, light, oxygen, moisture, other ingredient , microbial contamination, trace metal contamination, leaching from the container, etc. Therefore such studies involves various types of evaluation such as chemical, physical, microbiological, therapeutic and toxicological studies can serve as an important tool in stability studies. Standardization of herbal drugs means confirmation of its identity, Quality and purity. The present study includes review of various standardization parameters with their effectivity towards the quality herbal drugs. Present article also overviews various well-designed methodologies, techniques such as Chromatography, Spectroscopic tech. for the standardization of herbal raw materials and herbal formulations.

Review Article: Standardization and Evaluation of Herbal Drugs is Need of the Hour in Present Era

2020

The herbal preparations are being into used from the primordial time throughout the world. Now, maximum people are shifted towards the Ayurveda for the treatment of any affliction. Herbs are also used as side products in the preparation of synthetic medicine. Traditional system of medicine has taken over the place worldwide, hence majority of products are formulated. The increased use of herbal drug, now concerning with its purity and quality of herbal raw material as well as finished product. Purity of the herbal constituent is the main problem faced by the herbal industries. To overcome this issue, WHO has published the certain guidelines for the standardization of the herbal material. To ensure the efficacy, purity and quality control processes, the personnel should himself supervise the standardization processes with uniform rules. The review represents the standardization parameters with the standards value of quality, purity and efficacy.

Traditional Approaches towards Standardization of Herbal Medicines-A Review

J. Pharm. Sci. …, 2010

Herbal drug technology is used for converting botanical materials into medicines, where standardization and quality control with proper integration of modern scientific techniques and traditional knowledge is important. Herbal medicines are gaining more and more attention all over the world, due to their long historical clinical practice and less side effects. This paper reviewed the traditional methods in the quality control of herbal medicines, including, the traditional chromatographic methods and comprehensive methods, such as fingerprint and multi-component quantification are emphasized; hyphenated techniques, like HPLC-MS, GC-MS. In a few word, the analysis and quality control of herbal medicines are moving towards an integrative and comprehensive direction, in order to better address the inherent holistic nature of herbal medicines.

Analytical Method Development for Quality Control and Standardization of Medicinal Plants: A Critical Review

The demand for herbal medicine is increasing as herbs are less toxic, affordable, and culturally acceptable than the conventional drugs in developing countries. Thus, the increase in demand for standardization to ensure safety, purity and quality of medicinal plant. Standardization is a process of confirming herbal medicine identity and determination of its quality and purity. It involves botanical, physical, chemical and biological evaluations. These require application of different analytical methods and tools for standardization and phytochemical investigation of medicinal plants. The aim of this review is to explore analytical methods used for standardization of medicinal plants. A comprehensive web based literature review is employed in order to retrieve relevant information using international scientific databases including PubMed, Science direct, Web of Science, Google scholar. The review of selected 34 original published research articles were evaluated and summarized. The result this review showed that several analytical methods are employed and developed for standardization including chromatographic, TLC, GC, HPTLC and HPLC fingerprints, spectroscopic; UV, Fluorescence, MS, FT-IR, AAS and NMR are commonly applied techniques for different analytical purposes which are mainly used in physicochemical and phytochemical characterization of medicinal plants. Gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprint are also applicable for botanical identification. The choice of analytical methods may depend on phytochemical, physicochemical nature of medicinal plant, selectivity and accuracy of analytical method. Development of selective analytical method is recommended for pesticide and Alfa toxin analysis to further ensure safety, quality and for complete standardization of medicinal plants.
