Background: In developing countries, treatment of uterine fibromyoma is confronted with numerous problems, namely: financial inaccessibility to the proposed treatments, fear of surgery and the weakness of the technical platform. The objectives of the study were to calculate the frequency of uterine fibromyomas, describe the socio-demographic characteristics of patients, identify the main clinical data and to describe the modalities of surgical management. Methods: It was a mixed descriptive study, cumulative over a period of 5 years (60 months) with data collection in two phases: a 4-year retrospective study from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2018 and a 1-year prospective study from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019.Results: Authors collected 135 cases of uterine fibromyomas operated on out of a total of 260 cases of gynaecological pathologies, i.e. a frequency of 51.92%. Nulliparous women were the most concerned (45.18%), and women who attended school (60%) and those who did no...

The research focused on a systematic review of 959 cases operated for uterine fibromyoma (24.8%) from 3859 gynecological surgeries performed over a period of 10 years (2000-2010). The important parameters were those related to the general clinical and laboratory data, and especially those focused on the macro- and microscopic histopathological diagnostic methods. Thus, we inserted some details on the methods used for the histopathological examination of surgically removed samples. The age of patients operated for uterine fibromyoma was between 20 and 60 years, with the highest incidence in the 40-50 years group (594 cases--62.4%). The most frequent anatomo-clinical forms observed were uterine fibromyoma with menometrorrhagia (78.9%), large uterine fibromyoma associated with compression and metrorrhagia (81.1%), uterine fibromyoma with aseptic necrobiosis (33.6%). The other forms showed a reduced frequency. Uterine fibromyoma associated with infertility was found in patients under 40...
Fibromyoma of the uterus and its surgical management
International Journal of Reproduction, Contraception, Obstetrics and Gynecology
Background: Uterine fibroids are the commonest tumor affecting the female reproductive tract. In many instances they are asymptomatic, but in some women there does appear to be an association with heavy menstrual blood loss and subfertility. Classically treatment has been surgical with hysterectomy the most common approach for women who have completed their fertility and myomectomy for those who wish to conceive. The surgery can be carried out laparoscopically, vaginally and abdominally, although all routes are associated with an appreciable rate of morbidity. The aims of this study are (i) to formulate the line of surgical treatment of fibromyomas according to age and parity of the patient, (ii) to assess their efficacy, safety and long-term outcome. Methods: A study of 50 patients attending the Obstetrics and Gynecology OPD of a tertiary care institute was conducted over a period of one year. Detailed history and examination of the patients were done. Results: The best surgical opti...

Background: Leiomyomas or fibromyomas more commonly referred as uterine fibroids are the most common tumors of the female genital tract. They affect 20 to 25% of women in genital activity. The objective of present study is to describe the epidemiological and therapeutic profile of uterine fibroids at the UHCOBG.Methods: Retrospective and descriptive cross-sectional study of patients with uterine fibroids hospitalized in the department of gynecology of the UHCOBG between January 2015 and December 2016.Results: In total, 101 cases of uterine fibroids have been identified with a prevalence of 3.92%. The average age is 42.75±3.6 years old. The most affected age group varies from 35 to 45 years old. Thirty-eight-point six percent of the patients were pauciparous. The medical history of irregular menstrual cycle disorders was present in 17.8% of the cases. The symptomatology was dominated by menometrorrhagia (78.2%) and in 67.3% of the cases, patients had anemia. The majority of patients ...

Background: Uterine fibroid is the most common benign gynecological tumor in women of childbearing age and is common in our context. It can be discovered incidentally or by metrorrhagia. Objective: To study the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of uterine fibroids operated in the gynaecology and obstetrics department of the CHU-T. Patients and Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study including all patients operated on for uterine fibromyoma in the gynaecology-obstetrics department. The collection mode was retrospective, over a 5-year period from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021 in the mother-child department of the CHU-T. Data entry and analysis were carried out on a microcomputer using Epi info 7.2.5 software. Results: We collected 109 cases of uterine fibroids which represented 42.5% of the surgical activities of the gynaecology department. The average age of the patients was 38.9 years ± 7.8. Married women represented 77.1%. Salaried women accounted for 65.1%. The main reasons for consultation were uterine haemorrhage (53.1%), pelvic pain (40.4%) and hypofertility (31.2%). Ultrasound was performed in all patients to help map the fibroid nuclei. The main indication for surgery was haemorrhagic myoma (43.1%). The surgical treatment was conservative (myomectomy) in 58.7% of cases and radical (hysterectomy) in 27.4% of cases. The most frequent postoperative complication was vulvar haemorrhage and the average hospital stay was 4 days ± 1.4. Anatomical pathological examination of the surgical excision specimen carried out on 30 operated patients concluded that uterine leiomyoma was diagnosed in 100% of cases. Conclusion: Patient education for early detection, universal health insurance and cost subsidies could improve the management of this condition.
BMC Research Notes
Objectives: Uterine fibroids are common among the black race and associated with adverse outcomes in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, clinical presentation and maternal and foetal outcomes of birth among pregnant women with leiomyoma in two secondary care hospitals in Limbe and Buea, Cameroon. Results: The prevalence of fibroid in pregnancy was 16.7%. Respondents with leiomyoma were older than those without (p < 0.001) and of low parity (p = 0.02). Acute abdominal pain, (OR 3.8; 95% CI 1.4-9.9, p = 0.007), vaginal bleeding (OR 5.2; 95% CI 1.6-16.3, p = 0.004) were clinical presentation of leiomyoma in pregnancy. Cesarean birth (OR 4.5; 95% CI 1.4-13.6, p = 0.008), low Apgar score, (OR 6.0; 95% CI 1.9-19.1, p = 0.002), and postpartum hemorrhage (OR 4.7; 95% CI 1.7-13.2, p = 0.003) were adverse outcomes recorded.

Clinical Medicine and Diagnostics, 2016
Aim of the work: Extensive study has been made to get specific ratio of the women who had uterine fibroid and the total range of incidence of the leiomyoma. Methods and Material: Retrospective study of (1111) women patients referred from obstetrics and gynecology clinics (Women’s’ age between 15 and 79 years, mean was 52yrs). Data was collected from January 2013 to December 2014 at the Hospital of king Abdulaziz University. Results: A total of 236(21.2%) of 1111 patients were cases of uterine fibroid, while the remaining 875(78.8%) cases had normal ultrasound findings. According to the clinical symptoms that related to fibroid, bleeding which included 65(27.5%) was the commonest symptom for the patient’s then abdominal pain 32(13.6%). The 123(52%) of the women presented with solitary fibroids and 113(48%) women with multiple leiomyomata. Conclusions: Uterine fibroid highly related with reproductive age by (56.3%) and this result is matching to the result published in previous studies.
Prevalence of uterine fibroid in a South-Western Nigerian population: A sonographic study
Journal of Experimental and Clinical Anatomy, 2015
Aim: This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of uterine myoma, its variations, location, size and uterine anteroposterior diameter. Materials and Methods: The study utilized transabdominal ultrasound to assess myoma in 2,575 female patients. Results: Investigation showed 176 cases of myoma, representing a prevalence of 6.83%. 25% of the cases were associated with pregnancy, with solitary myoma accounting for 79.55%. Solitary myoma was noted in 59.09%. Analysis for multiple fibroid showed that 56.94% had 2 myoma; 18.06% had 3; 25% had more than 4 fibroids in-situ. Only 3.41% showed calcific degeneration. Conclusion: While higher values have been obtained in Europe, the prevalence of myoma in this study is similar to that documented for other parts of SouthWestern Nigeria. Results showed the preponderance of solitary myoma both in pregnant and non-pregnant subjects. Findings also showed that increased uterine anteroposterior diameter is correlated with the existence of myoma and could serve as a predictive index for the presence of fibroid.
Age of first diagnosis and incidence rate of uterine fibroids in Ghana. A retrospective cohort study
PLOS ONE
Background Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow in or on the uterus of women. Globally, they occur in more than 80% of women of African ancestry and 70% in white women. Uterine fibroid requires much attention because of its high incidence rate among women of all races and ages. This study sought to document the age of first diagnosis and incidence rates of uterine fibroids in our urban setting. Methods This study reviewed and analyzed the ages and year of diagnosis of all 2,469 patients with the first diagnosis of uterine fibroids from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2021 in South-Central Ghana. The obtained data were analyzed using GNU PSPP, Python on Jupyter Notebook and Libre Office Calc with statistical significance level set at p≤0.05. Results The overall average age was 36.29±8.08 years, with age range 17–61 years and the age groups with the highest frequencies were 35–39 years (n = 642, 26.00%), 30–34 years (n = 563, 22.80%) and 40–44 years (n = 381, 15.43%).
