The nightlife spaces: the case of bush bars in Abuja

Night time has been constantly neglected in the field of urban studies. Most of the literature in the fields of Urban Geography and Sociology has examined the daytime temporal space, neglecting the nocturnal dynamics. In fact, for only about a decade, geographical works in the sphere of night studies have taken place. This contribution, starting from the reflections of Lefebvre (1991) who claimed that specific activities took place and still take place only at night, examines particular meeting places such as bush bars, which are typical nightclubs developed in Nigeria in recent times. Nightlife in the City of Nawabs A Case of Hazratganj Lucknow India

The nightlife provides a place where people from different backgrounds or co-ethnic communities can interact or even be around with different people to build a sense of satisfaction to allow people to spend quality time with their friends and relatives. The concept of nightlife recreation is not new in Indian society; however, the pattern of usability of nightlife culture is transforming with respect to the current situation where the majority of the activities are influenced by the Western world. In this study, the authors discussed the current status of nightlife on the heritage street of Hazratganj, which had gone through a complete makeover in the year 2010 on the occasion of completing 200 years of its establishment. And in extension to that, the authors tried to find public opinion through a survey questionnaire to understand the gaps causing restrictions to accept the nightlife culture.

Economic Impacts of Curfew Imposition on the Nightclub Industry in Calabar Metropolis, Nigeria

The nightclub industry in Nigeria is a lucrative part (subset) of the larger music, drinks and entertainment industry that operates from dusk to dawn. The nightclub industry is an economy that is growing, robust and competitive in comparison to other economies. Conversely, the imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew in Calabar as a proactive strategy to curb security challenges in Calabar Metropolis affects the nightclub economy. The study investigates the economic impact of curfew imposition on the nightclub industry in Calabar. The research employed the qualitative approach and adopted a purposive sampling technique for data collection, targeting nightclub operators of Fifteen (15) nightclubs. The study revealed that the curfew imposition resulted in the decline of business patronage, job and income losses to nightclubs due to the curfew imposition amongst other contending factors. Recreational Behavior and Preference of Urban Residents in Ikot Ekpene Town, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

International Journal of Social Sciences and Management Review

This study examined the recreational behaviour and preference of urban residents in Ikot Ekpene Town as well as the recreational constraints in the area. A cross-sectional survey of 375 randomly selected residents was conducted in the five residential zones that make up the town using questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, frequency count and simple percentages were employed for data analysis. Results showed that respondents had an overwhelming positive disposition towards recreation with a high preference for outdoor recreation particularly "sitting out at open spaces, Parks and Plazas with drinks and photography". The further finding revealed the top 5 constraints to recreation including insecurity, poor access to recreational facilities, inadequate recreational facility, poor sanitation at recreational centres and high cost of recreational services. Findings re-echo the need to inaugurate community policing in order to strengthen security at recreational centres as well as enhancing access to recreation through citizens empowerment, infrastructure upgrade and expanding facilities for outdoor recreation.

Identification of Sociocultural Aspects of Nightlife in the City of Tehran

Abatract | Urban nightlife has long been discussed in the field of urban management and has been the subject of numerous studies. This issue needs to draw the attention of researchers to conduct in-depth studies and extensive research in order to raise awareness about the phenomenon of urban nightlife in terms of affecting various aspects of citizens' lives. The aim of this study therefore is to determine the social aspects of nightlife in the City of Tehran from the perspective of the beneficiaries. In this study, several semistructured interviews were conducted with three groups of citizens, business owners, and experts. The interpretive analysis was then applied to analyse the texts. Finally, categories were revealed and explianed under sub-categories such as beneficiaries, positive and negative aspects, characteristics, attractions, and individual and social repulsions. Positive and negative aspects were determined and it was revealed that citizens and business owners have attractions and repulsions to the nightlife phenomenon, but generally, they are optimistic about it. Moreover, different groups of participants are demographically identifiable.

Insecurity and its Economic Impact on Calabar Nightclubs, Nigeria

In rapidly urbanising areas like Calabar, Nigeria, nightclubs stood out as vital economic contributors. This study delved into the economic impact of insecurity on the nightclub industry within Calabar, Southern Cross River State. A qualitative method was employed, using purposive sampling to collect data from operators of nightclubs in the area. The results revealed fifteen active nightclubs in close proximity to significant crime hotspots. This proximity underscored potential public safety threats and the resulting economic challenges. The findings further showed a marked decline in patronage, revenue, and staffing during periods of heightened insecurity. The study concluded with recommendations for enhanced security, competent nightclub management, and strategic urban planning to ensure a safe and thriving nightlife in Calabar. These findings laid the groundwork for future research, informed policy discussions, and actions in cities facing similar challenges.

Recognising the Nexus Between the Entertainment Industry and Nigeria’s Economic Growth

The entertainment industry in its present state, as occasioned by the new wave of technology, is a ‘cash cow’. However, most African countries, Nigeria inclusive, are not fully tapping into its great potential to generate the required revenue for their economic growth and development. Anchored on the premise of cultural history, the paper adopts the historical research method to interrogate the concept of entertainment from the pre-colonial era to its current state and find the nexus between entertainment and the economic growth of nations. It finds that the entertainment industry is a gold mine that is not fully explored and concludes that Nigeria needs to capitalise on the new forms of technological advancement that could enhance and boost her economy. It recommends that young people need to be trained and repositioned in the process of driving modern entertainment and creative industries.
