"The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of several psychological treatments for social phobia during adolescence. The sample consisted of 59 adolescents who met the criteria for DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) generalized social phobia. Subjects were assigned to one of three experimental treatments (N=44) or a control condition (N=15), and treatment was provided in school settings. Assessments were conducted at pretest, posttest and after a 1-year follow-up. Between-group and within-group analyses were conducted. Overall, short-term and long-term results show that the active treatments were superior to the control for treating adolescents with generalized social phobia. Specifically, experimental treatments resulted in a significant improvement of self-esteem and social skills as well as a reduction of the symptoms of social anxiety and interference with family, social, and academic life. Issues that may contribute to future research are also discussed."

"The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical significance and effect size of three multi-component treatments for social phobia in adolescent population. Fifty-nine adolescents who met the DSM-IV (APA, 1994) criteria for generalized social phobia were assigned to three experimental treatments (N=44) or a control condition (N=15). Assessments were conducted at pretest, posttest and after a 12- month follow-up. Assessment measures included a broad range of scales to evaluate maladaptation, social skills, public speech, and self-esteem as well as cognitive and avoidance symptoms of social anxiety. Short-term and long-term results do support the effectiveness of the treatments in contrast with the control condition according to high and very high effect sizes obtained. Furthermore, the outcomes based on clinical significance also show significant changes in contrast to control condition."

Treatment of social anxiety in adolescents

Cognitive and Behavioral Practice, 1995

This paper describes a new cognitive behavioral group treatment program for social phobia in adolescents (CBGT-A). Based upon empirically validated methods of treating shy adolescents and adults with social phobia, CBGT-A was developed to meet the needs of adolescents with social phobia between the ages of 13 and 17. In this paper, the diagnosis and phenomenology of social phobia is described, with emphasis on the expression of the disorder in youth. Comorbid conditions and behavioral concomitants unique to adolescents are described, so that clinicians may attend to the particular presentation of the disorder in this population. The CBGT-A program is described in detail and illustrated with case examples. Attention is given to the role of parents in the treatment process. Potential obstacles to successful treatment are defined and suggestions for managing these difficult clinical situations are offered.

Social anxiety in adolescents

Indian journal of psychiatry, 2004

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a chronic, disabling and treatable disorder with common onset in adolescence. Virtually there are no Indian studies on SAD. The study was conducted to find out frequency, demographic and phenomenological characteristics of SAD, family related risk factors, academic impairment and comorbidity of depression among adolescents. 421 adolescents in one high-school were screened for SAD and depression and associated factors with academic impairment. 54 (12.8%) had SAD. The most common manifestation of SAD was avoiding giving speeches. SAD was equally common among both genders, was associated with difficulty in coping with studies, concern about weight, having less friends, lack of intimacy with parents, and being treated differently from siblings. In conclusion, SAD is a common adolescent disorder, with major depression as a comorbidity and associated with impairment in academic functioning. All adolescents especially with depression consulting medical prof...
