Hemato-Biochemical and Mineral Status in Dogs with Intermittent Diarrhea and Unthriftiness

Poor growth rate and intermittent diarrhea in pets are common problem faced on daily practice. T. canis is one of the most common cause to these problem and has a major health impact to both veterinarian and pet owner. This study aims to scrutinize hemato-biochemical and mineral status in dogs suffering from intermittent diarrhea and unthriftness due to T. canis. Thirty dogs were involved in this investigation, hematologic, serum and stool samples were taken and examined. Significant decrease in RBCs, HB, and PCV (P≤0.01, P≤0.001) along with significant increase (P≤0.05) in WBCs and eosinphils (P≤0.01) were the most consistent hematologic alterations recorded. Significant decrease (P≤0.01, P≤0.05) in TP, albumin accompanied by significant increase (P≤0.05) in ALT, AST and cholesterol values were found. Mineral profile showed significant decrease (P≤0.05) in zinc, copper and iron levels in the examined dogs. In conclusion, Toxocara canis infection appeared to have direct effect on mineral status, in dogs suffered from diarrhea due to T. canis, the cholesterol levels change; anemia is furthermore major health concern associated with the parasite and affects the growth of these dogs.
Algerian Indigenous Dog: Hemato-biochemical Profile in Healthy and Gastroenteritis Diseased Case

The purpose of this study is primarily, to establish the haemato-biochemical reference values of the indigenous canine breed in Batna area of Algeria as related to the gender effect. For this reason, 20 apparently healthy local dogs were used. A complete blood count and the serum biochemical parameters analyzed here remained mostly within the physiological reference intervals. The effect of sex was only observed in the platelet count, which is higher in female dogs, whereas the creatinine level is higher in male dogs. The second part is devoted to evaluating the haemato-biochemical parameters in dogs with moderate to severe gastroenteritis infections. A total of 37 diseased dogs were selected and classified into two groups-diseased vaccinated dogs and diseased unvaccinated dogs-to establish the haemato-biochemical parameters. Haemato-biochemical investigation shows significant alteration in diseased unvaccinated dogs than other groups.

In dogs with idiopathic acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea syndrome (AHDS), a serious loss of intestinal mucosal barrier integrity occurs. However, the incidence of bacterial translocation in dogs with idiopathic AHDS is not known. Thus, the objectives of this prospective study were to identify the incidence of bacteraemia, to evaluate the frequency of septic events and the influence of bacteraemia on various clinical and laboratory parameters, duration of hospitalisation and survival of dogs with idiopathic AHDS. Diarrhoea is a common and multi-factorial condition in dogs, the aetiology of which is often incompletely understood. A case-control study was carried out to compare the carriage of some common canine enteric pathogens (enteric coronavirus, parvovirus, distemper, endoparasites, Campylobacter and Salmonella spp.), as well as lifestyle factors such as vaccination history, diet and contact with other species, in dogs presenting at first opinion veterinary practices with and without diarrhoea.
Haemato-biochemical alterations in gastroenteritis affected dogs

The present study was conducted in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex and Instructional Dairy Farm, C.V.A. Sc., GBPUA & T, Pantnagar, U.S. Nagar (Uttarakhand, India). A total of 12 dogs were included in the study out of which 6 were suffering from gastro-enteritis whereas 6 healthy dogs were chosen to serve as healthy control. Hemogram of the dogs suffering from gastro-enteritis revealed significant (P≤0.05) reduction in Hb, PCV, TEC, TLC, neutrophils and MCHC when compared to healthy dogs. While MCV and lymphocyte count increased significantly (P≤0.05). Alterations in biochemical parameters included significant (P≤0.05) increase in serum ALP and AST concentrations and reduced serum albumin.
Evaluation of Erythrocytes, Platelets, and Serum Iron Profile in Dogs with Chronic Enteropathy

The aim of this study is to evaluate iron status, erythrocyte, and platelet modifications in dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE). Dogs were grouped as food-responsive diarrhea (FRD, n = 11), antibiotic-responsive diarrhea (ARD, n = 5), and steroid-responsive diarrhea (SRD, n = 6) relating to therapeutic-response. Clinical and haematological findings, evidence of gastrointestinal blood loss, and iron metabolism were evaluated before and after treatment. A mild normocytic or microcytic anemia and thrombocytosis were identified, respectively in 18.0% and 31.8% of CE dogs. No significant differences between pre-and posttreatment of hematocrit, haemoglobin, and mean corpuscular volume, platelet count and mean platelet volume were found. Statistical analysis pointed out significant differences between pre-and posttreatment in serum iron (P < .03) and unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) (P < .01). No significant correlations were found between these parameters and canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease activity index and pattern of CE as well.
Haemato-Biochemical Alterations in Dogs with Vomition

Vomition is a common clinical presentation in small animal practice and may be associated with gastrointestinal and systemic diseases. Fifty cases of vomition in dogs were studied at Veterinary Clinical Complex of the College in Anand during the period of six months for clinical and haemato-biochemical alterations in comparison to 8 normal healthy dogs. Among 50 dogs, the incidence of vomiting possibly due to Parvo viral infection, pyometra, renal disorders, encylostoma infection, pseudo-pregnancy, hepatic disorders, thrombocytopenia, neutrophilia and dietary abnormalities was in 44.0, 2.0, 14.0, 14.0, 2.0, 4.0, 2.0, 14.0 and 4.0 % cases, respectively. Canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which are seen mostly in dogs younger than 6 months (mos) old with high mortality despite early diagnosis and treatment, cause various hematological abnormalities and clinical symptoms accompanied by gastroenteritis findings. Since the methods developed for definitive ante-mortem diagnosis are time-consuming and require expertise and equipment, routine laboratory tests such as blood gases and hemogram analyzes still maintain their importance in the diagnosis and monitoring the complications associated with the viruses.
