Career Guidance Services in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Kano, Nigeria

The study examines career guidance services provided by school counsellors in secondary schools in Kano state. The study used 387 sample respondents drawn through purposive sampling from randomly selected schools. Questionnaire instrument with satisfactory psychometric properties was employed in data collection process. The results show that school counsellors assist students to identify their strength, abilities and learning style, help students to make appropriate career pathway selection, set educational and career goals, search for information about careers and work choices. However, school counsellors underperform in helping students to make future educational planning, college selection and placement. Moreover, no significant difference was found among gender excepts in educational Planning, college selection and placement with female students having better educational planning, college selection and placement. The study focused on guidance and counselling: a panacea to students’ career choice among senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt Metropolis. The factors under investigation include how educational counseling, vocational counseling and personal social counselling enhance students’ career choice in senior secondary school. In spite of the importance of career awareness for the growing generation, students are still beset with a myriad, of career choices which make their career adjustments difficult. The study made use of descriptive survey. The population of the study consists of 9,600 SS 2 students in all the public senior secondary schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis. The sample size of the study was 400 students, the figure was generated using Taro Yamane formula: The sampling technique used was simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was self-developed questionnaire. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive analyses, mean and standard deviation for the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using z-rest statistical tool at 0.05 level of significant. However, the findings of the study reveal that educational counseling, vocational counseling and personal social counseling enhance students’ career choice in senior secondary school. Therefore, the study recommends that: government should establish and equip guidance and counselling unit in all the public secondary schools in Rivers State hence it enhances students career choice, government and non-governmental organization should organize seminar or enlightenment campaign for staff and students on the importance of vocational counselling, school management should always arrange awareness programme for the students on the need of personal social counseling because of its important in their career choice.
This study investigated students' perception of counselor's role in their career choice in secondary schools in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The design used was descriptive survey. Sample size of 378 students was used in the study. Questionnaires was the instrument used for data collection. Mean score, standard deviation and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were used for data analysis. The study revealed that Students' perceptions include the fact that counselors are central in the process of their making career choices, students want trust and discretion of the counselor in relating to them, and the activities of the counselor should have positive influence on their career direction; to a high extent, the perception of the roles of counsellors in Nigeria is in line with the global practices of counsellors. The challenges militating against guidance and counselling practice in Nigeria includes wrong notion of counselling, assigning other duties to counsellors other than counselling, absence of confidentiality between counsellors and students, and lack of funding to expose counselors to further in-service training. Based on the findings, the recommendations proposed were that counselors need to live up to the expectations of them, earning the confidence and trust of students by being discrete in the discharge of their services, Nigeria needs to ensure that the guidance and counselling department in the schools are provided with the necessary tools that could enhance their work, as well as providing adequate funding needed to make the work easy for the counselors. Also, the counsellors should not be overloaded with other activities apart from counselling so that they can discharge their duties effectively.
The study assessed the availability and use of guidance and counselling services in selected female Secondary Schools in Sokoto Metropolis of Sokoto State Nigeria.The Nigerian secondary school educational system particularly in Sokoto State expects that students are to be properly guided on their educational activities, vocational choices, emotional and socio-personal problems. Career decision making among secondary school students is an important step towards preparation for the world of work. The purpose of this study was to find out teacher counsellors role in facilitating students’ career decision making in Eldoret town. The study utilised a descriptive survey research design. The target population consisted of 2832 students and 30 teacher counsellors. A sample size of 284 students (Form 3 and Form Four) was selected. Data collection was done using a questionnaire for the participants. The results showed that despite the existence of guidance and counselling departments in secondary schools, teacher counsellors did not provide career guidance sessions to students. Teacher counsellors’ capacity to deliver on career guidance counselling was found to be inadequate thereby resulting to minimal effect on assisting of student career decisions and choice. The study established that students’ attitude, inadequate resources, and time were the challenges facing effective application of guidance and counselling towards assisting student in career decision making process. The study recommends that schools should invest more in the acquisition of materials on students’ career development and the guidance and counselling department needs to increases student sensitization on requirements for career choice. The findings of the study will be significant to guidance and counselling teachers in secondary schools, school administration, students and future researchers in the field of student career choice and development.
Career Guidance: Role of Counseling Resources and Community Support in Public Schools in Kenya

Challenges facing guidance and counseling directly affect career guidance services provided in the Kenyan secondary schools. Some of the challenges include: inadequate guidance and counseling resources and limited community support on guidance and counseling programmes. The purpose of the study was to examine the role of guidance and counseling resources and community support on career guidance among public secondary school students in Kakamega South Sub-county in Kenya. The objectives of the study were: examine how availability of guidance and counseling resources affects career guidance and find out the effect of community support on career guidance. The study was guided by a conceptual framework that represented the interrelationship among variables used in the study, and adopted descriptive survey research design. The sample comprised of 12 School Principals, 12 guidance and counseling teachers, 296 form four students, 36 form four parents and Quality Assurance and Standards Officer of education in the sub-county, giving a total of 357 respondents. Purposive sampling, stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques were employed in the study to select respondents. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview schedules and document analysis. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics which included frequencies, percentages and graphs. Qualitative data was assessed in verbatim, then transcribed and organized into themes and sub-themes. The findings of the study showed that inadequate guidance and counseling resources and limited community support negatively affected career guidance. The study concluded that availability of guidance and counseling resources and community support directly affected provision of career guidance in schools. Recommendations of the study were that national and county governments, school principals, teachers, parents and the larger community should work together to facilitate career guidance in schools. The results and findings of the study are hoped to be significant to the Ministry of Education and all stake holders in the field of guidance and counseling in enhancing career guidance in public secondary schools in order to achieve the set educational goals.

As an individual goes through Senior High School education, s/he encounters situations which require them to take appropriate educational, vocational and social decisions. This highlights the need for guidance and counselling services in learning institutions. Its importance cannot be overstated. Research has shown that young people think about careers within the context of life more than in terms of qualifications and training. This study explored the knowledge of senior high school students in the Agona East district, about career counselling and how career guidance has been of benefit to them. The qualitative approach of descriptive survey using the purposive sampling technique was adopted. The data gathered was analysed using two main themes consisting of several sub-themes. It emerged from the study that for each occupation, different interests, abilities, personality traits and professional values are required. The findings also revealed that career counselling helps students to link what they learn to their interests, capacities, aspirations, and match these with existing opportunities. Going forward, the study recommends that schools assist students to identify their interests and make them aware of the importance of academic qualifications in making career choices. It further recommends to policy makers; especially the government of Ghana, to reinforce Guidance and Counselling programmes in senior high schools

This study examined the perceived influence of career Guidance and Counselling Services (GCS) on secondary school students’ academic performance among secondary schools in Tanga City. The study employed a mixed method approach that utilized a correlation design and a case study design. The sample size was 423 respondents, including 330 students, 26 heads of schools, 33 guidance and counsellor teachers, 33 academic teachers, and one City Educational Officer (CEO). The study used questionnaires, and semi structured interview guides for data collection. The study concludes that the academic performance of the students is good; the career GCS services contribute to students’ academic performance. Furthermore, there is a significant positive relationship between students’ access to career GCS and their academic performance. The study investigated the Perceptions on the role of guidance and counselling programme on Kenyan secondary school students' career decision making. The study adopted descriptive survey design and the sample size comprised 250 students in the district selected using stratified sampling technique and six guidance and counselling teachers also randomly selected for the study. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to elicit information from students and interview schedules to collect data from counselling teachers and principals. The results indicated that, there was a significant relationship between role of guidance and counselling for both form one/two (X2=1.440, df=2, P=.001<.05) and form three and four (X2=3.263, df=2, P=.001<.05). It was revealed by the analysis that students agreed that academic, personal and social competence were roles played by guidance and counselling in schools. Similarly, guidance and counselling helped them to attain spiritual growth, vocational, health and marital awareness. Therefore, the implication is that career counselling should be inherently practiced to provide the students with indispensable information and competence required in the world of work.
