Communication Strategies are ways of the learners to explain a message to his listener when the initial plan cannot be carried out. In this research, the problem of the research is as follow: “what communication strategies are used by the students on the fifth semester (year III) in learning English at English Department at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar? To solve the problem above, the writer used the theory of Ellis (1985), Faerch and Kasper in Ellis (1985), and Brown (1980). The limitation of this research is on classroom realities in learning English as a foreign language. The purpose of our study is to investigate works of scholars about the problems of speaking in learning foreign languages. We try to analyze the difficulties in doing speaking exercises in mixed level groups. In our study we refer to Wenden's statement (1986), who noted that we need to find out speaking problems in order to improve speaking skill. According to it, we discovered difficulties in speaking of students in mixed level groups. These difficulties helped us to find the ways of improving students' abilities to speak authentic materials and apply them in communication. Problems in speaking in mixed level groups were taken from the results of questionnaire. Students' questionnaire determined the effective ways of using role plays and various activities in practice. The result of our study showed that different creative activities in English classes motivate students to learn foreign languages, and improve knowledge. Speaking as one of the language skills becomes important topics to discuss in language learning process. The discussion topics can be related to the instructional techniques, the learners manifest and produce meaningful and appropriate utterances .

Communication Strategy Used By English Department Students Of Muhammadiyah University Of Surakarta: A Case Study In Saturday English Gathering (SEGA) Program

The data of this research contain communication strategies used by students of Saturday English Gathering Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in 2014/2015 academic year during they are speaking. The writer takes 3 groups of SEGA program, with the total 30 students as the subject of the research. There are 161 percent of each types of communication strategies. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data are based on Celce-Murcia taxonomy of communication strategies. The result of this study shows that there are five types of communication strategies, the most dominant types of communication strategies used by students in SEGA program is fillers with 37,26%, and the type of communication strategies rarely used by the students is non-linguistic means and restructuring with 0,62%. The result above implies that teaching communication strategies are needed for the students who still have limited knowledge of the target language. By teaching communication strategies, the students will be more aware of when they can use communication strategies for speaking better.

Factors affecting students' speaking performance in English department of Jawzjan University

This study aims to recognize the problems that students of English department face when they speak English. To achieve the objective of the investigation a quantitative research was designed. A questionnaire was used as the main data collection tool. The findings of the study showed that majority of the students have a positive perception about importance and necessity of speaking skill. According to the findings most of the students do not have the opportunity of practicing English speaking out of the class. Moreover, dissimilarity in English education background of the students are another challenge which is recognized in outcome of the study. Furthermore, the findings showed that most of the students feel motivated and confident in speaking performance. Moreover, the findings also revealed that the teachers have significant role for motivating the students in speaking performance. To sum up, the result exposed that students are appreciated and praised when they perform a speaking task efficiently.

The aims of this study was to find out students’ efforts in improving speaking skills at University of PGRI Sumatera Barat. This present study employed a qualitative descriptive design with taken from a questionnaire adapted from the College Students Experience Questionnaire (CSEQ) G.D Kuh (2003) as a research instrument. The data collect by distributing questionnaires using Google Forms. There were 49 students first semester in 2021 studying at the Department of English Education, University of PGRI Sumatera Barat who participated in this study. The students have a purpose in learning a language especially English that they want to be able in speaking. However, in the practice, some communication problem occured. The existence of communication problems are coped by using some communication strategies. This study was an attempt to obtain data on the types of communication strategies used by the students while speaking, to handle their difficulty in speaking performance. In order to obtain those data, a descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The subject of the study was class VIII A which consist of 26 students in MTs Negeri Miri in the academic year 2015/2016.
