Six Sigma: literature review and implications for future research

There has been considerable number of papers published related to Six Sigma applications in manufacturing and service organizations. However, very few studies are done on reviewing the literature of Six Sigma in all the areas including manufacturing, construction, education, financial service, BPOs and healthcare etc. Considering the contribution of Six Sigma in recent time, a more comprehensive review is presented in this paper. The authors have reviewed Six Sigma literatures in the way that would help research academicians and practitioners to take a closer look at the growth, development, and applications of this technique. The authors have reviewed various journal papers and suggested different schemes of classification. In addition, certain gap areas are identified that would help researchers in further research.The paper has been categorized in four sections. Section one & two present introduction to Six Sigma and preamble to literature review respectively. Section three presents classification of Six Sigma papers based on research methodology & research contents. Section four presents key findings, conclusion and areas for future research.

Six Sigma: Literature Review and Methodologies to Improve Implementation

There were plethora of research done and journal papers published in relate to Six Sigma. Ironically, there are few research and papers were published on reviewing the literature on Six Sigma in all the sectors like Engineering, Healthcare, IT Industry, education etc. Six Sigma is not only about the statistics but also it is a process of defect reduction, improvement and customer satisfaction. The goal of this study is to look at prosperity of improving methodologies and deepen the knowledge of various research and coclude the process Six Sigma. In this paper, a survey of Six Sigma literatures is presented through various research papers to illustrate the broad scope of the application of Six Sigma. Lean Six sigma can also be implemented in the financial services and the with significant results and improvements which was shown with the help of case study.

Six Sigma: a literature review

Purpose: The purpose of the work presented in this paper is to capture the current state of Six Sigma as well as to document the current practices of Six Sigma through a systematic literature review so as to extend and update the previous work of Brady and Allen (2006). Design/methodology/approach: The approach to this research is to answer the questions such as what is Six Sigma?, what are the applications of the Six Sigma?, what are the main enablers and barriers to its application?, and what are the emerging trends? These questions are used to guide the search of papers from various publication databases even if it is expected that existing literature might not be sufficiently developed to translate each question directly into a finding. The literature is then analysed and the major emerging themes are presented. Findings: Seven key findings (topics on which the views of the authors converged) and two issues (topics on which authors had differing views) have been established. These include the interpretation of Six Sigma, tools and techniques, implementation of Six Sigma, benefits, adoption, enablers and links to other disciplines. Originality/value: The systematic literature review approach used in this paper allows emerging trends and issues in Six Sigma to be highlighted in a structured and thematic manner, enabling the future work to progress as Six Sigma continues to develop and evolve. The findings also open up new opportunities to apply Six Sigma in the fields that are not widely explored before for instance sustainability and Product-Service Systems (PSS).

Six Sigma - A New Direction to Quality and Productivity Management

The fast changing economic conditions such as global competition, declining profit margin, customer demand for high quality product, product variety and reduced leadtime etc. had a major impact on manufacturing industries. To respond to these needs various industrial engineering and quality management strategies such as ISO 9000, Total Quality Management, Kaizen, Just-in-time manufacturing, Enterprise Resource Planning, Business Process Reengineering, Lean management etc. have been developed. A new paradigm in this area of manufacturing strategies is Six Sigma. The Six Sigma approach has been increasingly adopted world wide in the manufacturing sector in order to enhance productivity and quality performance and to make the process robust to quality variations. This paper discusses the quality and productivity improvement in a manufacturing enterprise through a case study. The paper deals with an application of Six Sigma DMAIC(Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) methodo -logy in an industry which provides a framework to identify, quantify and eliminate sources of variation in an operational process in question, to optimize the operation variables, improve and sustain performance viz. process yield with wellexecuted control plans. Six Sigma improves the process performance (process yield) of the critical operational process, leading to better utilization of resources, decreases variations & maintains consistent quality of the process output.
