Generational effects of culture and digital media in former Soviet Republics
Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, 2023
In public opinion, social and digital media provide means for influence as well as sorting according to pre-existing values. Here we consider types of media usage versus opinion using new polling results in the former Soviet republics (FSRs) of Belarus, Ukraine, and Georgia. Over 1000 individuals in each country were asked about a news event (the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol) and about the long-term future of their country. We find that year of birth and country of residence, rather than self-reported media reliance, consistently predicted the respondents' views, particularly on the future of their country. The timing of these differences suggests a cultural difference between generations growing up in the Soviet Union (likely more pro-Russian) versus afterward, in an FSR (more pro-Western). Whereas digital media choice is somewhat correlated with perceptions of a recent, international news event, the more predictive factors are longer-term cultural values and age cohorts within each nation.

KnE Social Sciences

The author notes that the unusual speed of the Internet spread in the life of Russian society made the circumstances of growing up of modern young Russians very specific. In fact, they became the first generation of Russian “digital natives”. Growing up in the conditions of the rapid spread of the Internet in society, many of them are used to perceiving the Internet as a natural and inalienable attribute of everyday reality. The author uses materials of secondary data analysis and the data of his sociological research among Russian youth to determine the role of the Internet in the social reality of youth and to find out the possible risks and opportunities that it can create. The empirical basis of the study is a questionnaire survey conducted by the author in 2018 among the youth of the city of Ekaterinburg, Russia. The key conclusion of the article is that the Inter...
MULTIMEDIA AND TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING FORMING "SPIRITUAL TIES" BETWEEN RUSSIAN GENERATIONS, 2019
Technological innovations in the modern media industry have led to the emergence of the risk of insufficiently effective communication between "the analogue" and "the digital" generations of the Russians. Storytelling as a genre of narrative journalism has the potential of involvement, it facilitates the perception and holds the attention of "the digital youth". The organization of multimedia and transmedia narratives is considered as the basis for possibly effective intergenerational communication and the forming of "spiritual ties" (as said by the President of Russia V. Putin). The work reveals the values and constructed meanings in storytelling projects like "1917. Free history"and"1968.Digital", as well as the differences in their perception by the "analogue" and the "digital" generations. The results of the study show that representatives of both generations seem interested in the technological side of a storytelling called "1968". However, the younger generation demonstrates less interest towards another storytelling, "1917". Nevertheless, the projects' messages are mostly not read by the "digital" generation. The values broadcasted in "1968" are not accepted by the "analogue" generation. In addition, the constructed values in the mentioned storytelling do not comply with the political demands of Russia, which makes it doubtful that they are used to form "spiritual ties" between the Russians.
This article employs ethnographic methods to examine internet use in the Russian margins by working-class families. Research materials from semi-structured interviews and participant-observation are supplemented by survey data. Qualitative social research on new media use critically examines technologically determinist assumptions about social effects of the internet, including the so-called ‘digital divide’. This research also seeks a contextualised understanding of new media use by examining it as embedded in other social settings and practices. In addition, a neglected area of research this article seeks to address is the socially-determined aspects of use. The ethnographic materials and survey data collected indicate that Woolgar’s rules of virtuality (2002) generally hold true in the Russian margins: use of new media depends on the local social context and supplements, rather than replace real activities. Most Russian users in the group surveyed are highly instrumentalist and have little interest in the communicative and non-grounded aspects of the media.
RUSSIAN AND JAPANESE YOUNGER GENERATIONS IN SEARCH FOR A NEW MEDIA PRODUCT
The relevance of the study is conditioned by the objective necessity to form students' ability to online and offline behavior in modern media space. The aim of the study is to identify the role of Russian and Japanese younger generations in search for a new media product in the modern society. The article reveals the reasons of decreasing offline publications and analyzes the effects of the sharp increase in demand for tablet computers, which have become the fastest-growing category of personal electronics and displacing readers and e-books both in Russia and in Japan. Based on the Russian and the Japanese experience we made a conclusion that the agenda of regional print media mostly focused on the local life. The reasons not to read the central press by the youth in province is based on the belief that it is too far from the people's common life. The material contains a comparative analyses and forecast, whether the Internet will be able to occupy a niche, which traditionally was belonging to the newspaper. The analysis of the younger readers' behavior is made on the generations' attitude towards media and contains the idea how soon the Internet will be able to completely replace the function of the print media. The ways of analysis are useful for development of communication theory, linguapragmatics, psycho-and sociolinguistics, cultural linguistics, media linguistics, comparative linguistics and pedagogics. The article is considered the features of functioning of mass media influencing on the youth in Japan and Russia.

Digital Amnesia of the Youth Mass Media Audience and Ways of Its Overcoming
KnE Social Sciences, 2021
'Digital Amnesia' as a result of the dependence of Internet users is considered in this article on the example of students' mass media audience. The empirical basis for this article was formed by the results of sociological research obtained by the authors in the framework of the project "Digitalization of communicative-cultural memory and the problems of its intergenerational transmission" conducted in 2018-2020. Young people in the digital age not only face drastic changes in media practices but also the development of factors affecting the formation of communicative-cultural memory of various societies representatives. This makes it possible to identify some methods of preserving the role of the most important social institution by journalism, as well as the formation of meaningful components of mass media activity under conditions of permanent social and technological transformation. Several conclusions have been drawn from the system analysis. Firstly, the need to introduce the notion of 'functional media literacy' into the theory of communication. Secondly, it is possible to overcome digital amnesia by increasing the number of multimedia products of mass media of various subjects. As an example, the Russian Digital project "1968", created specifically for smartphones and addressed primarily to the generation Y. evoked a wide public response, and this project offers a method to present and promote specific events, facts and phenomena in the form of multimedia stories. The use of the project materials in university pedagogical practice is one of the most effective ways of interaction with a young audience. Thirdly, the study confirms the hypothesis that a method of information selection focused on sensationalism, discontinuity and conflict is not typical for students as consumers of media products. For most of this demogrpahic, the mass media act as a cognitive and ideological phenomenon that primarily assumes a dialogical relationship between the communicator and communicants. This allows us to conclude that digital amnesia as a form of psychological dependence arises in representatives of this audience group most often when the media discourse lacks intellectual and emotional involvement.

This study focuses on the notion of power as a way of conceptualisation, representation and functioning in the Russian and English-speaking media discourse and its role in the life of the younger generation of the third millennium. Power and its language have always remained an actual research question of interdisciplinary scientific analysis. However, studying young people’s linguistic and paralinguistic perception of power in the era of digitalisation becomes extremely important due to an empowering role young adults have started playing in modern society employing new media and their discursive communication there. The study regards the theoretical background of the phenomenon of power, based on A. Gramsci’s hegemonic approach. The authors of the research suggest that the media discourse is a hegemonic form of power that maintains its position through the elaboration of a particular worldview, which makes a significant impact on young individuals, the so-called net-generation.
