This paper discusses the importance of environmental aesthetics and scenic beauty of current roadside vegetation in the highways, and the necessity for the contribution of users (motorists) preferences in the integration of scenic beauty of roadside vegetation into its management plans. The results of a questionnaire survey of motorist's opinion on the landscape aesthetics and quality of some highways in Tehran city are presented with their analyses. Findings of the research indicate the roadside vegetation as the most important elements of highway scenic beauty for the majority of users. High-rise building, historic or cultural landmarks, farmlands, street lighting and advertisement boards found with lower level of importance to the passengers. A strong positive tendency of respondents found towards variety of vegetation types instead of a uniform composition. The most preferred combination of plant types of road were preferred were: trees in the background, grass and flowering...

African Journal of Agricultural …, 2011
Together with European landscape convention, it is required that studies related to landscape planning should be integrated with the sectors such as department of urban and regional planning, industry, agriculture and forestry. Visual landscape analysis has an important position in landscape planning. In this study, it is aimed that a method for visual landscape quality which is one of the researches of landscape analysis is developed in a physical planning workout that is to be carried out in Kars and Ardahan. The data that is to represent the seven factors are: Landform, vegetation, water, color, influence of adjacent scenery, scarcity, cultural modifications, in practicing the visual source management method has been constructed in the environment of geographical information systems by making use of the databases of Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Corine land cover. The accuracy of visual landscape quality maps has been proved by practicing the method in site conditions and in twenty three different points. This situation proves that the method can safely be practiced in the studies such as sub-regional scales, planning and strategic environmental assessment.
The Position of Garden Sculpture in Tehran Urban Space, 2016
| The concept of beauty has been always an important concern for philosophers and scientists. In recent decades, landscape aesthetics as an effective approach in recognition and understanding the environment, has played an important role in landscape literatures. Therefore, recognizing different orientations in designing landscape aesthetics and indices for preferences in aesthetics have been considered necessary for studying in this field. This paper has started by proposing this question: what is the ratio of indices of environmental aesthetics in urban landscape. To answer this question, it can be proposed that, through formulating the aesthetic indices, a model to understand the beauty of the environment based on its constituent components can be achieved. Methodology of this study is qualitative and the literature in the field of urban landscape aesthetics have been studied through library studies while aesthetic indices were achieved using logical reasoning and studying relevant resources. Furthermore, different approaches in urban landscape aesthetics have been studied and analyzed in this paper, in order to find a meaningful relation between indices and respective approaches. In order to suggest a conceptual model, four main keywords were identified that indicate on urban landscape aesthetic, including: sensation, understanding, conception and aesthetic judgment. Finally the suggested model suggests aesthetic of urban landscape include four stages: study of objective elements in urban landscape, study of organizational factors of elements that lead to excitation potential, study of intellectual property derived from environment and study of aesthetic response of human to the environment.
Assessing Visual Quality of Landscape on Roadside Greenery in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia
International Review for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development
Urban greenery contributes significantly to enhance the aesthetics of landscapes and further provides best experiences to visitors. Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia's major cities, is a well-known destination for tourism, education and culture. The purpose of this research therefore was to assess the visual quality of landscape (VQL) of roadside greenery in Yogyakarta City. For that, 30 sample units were selected by using proportional random sampling method. A questionnaire containing questions about respondent's sociodemographic characteristic and perception on the selected criteria of VQL of the roadside greenery was utilized. The selected respondents were the residents of neighbourhood area around the sample units. The value of the VQL was obtained from 200 respondents' perception after they has finished to observe 30 photographs of sample units showed to them. The collected data then were analysed by using modified scenic beauty estimation (SBE) method. SBE values were assessed by five criteria comprising complexity, interference to coherence, stewardship, naturalness, and beauty impression of roadside greenery. The three categories of road in Yogyakarta City, namely secondary arterial road (SAR), secondary collector road (SKYSCRAPER/CITY), and local street (Ulrich, Simons et al.) were being classified into three clusters of high, medium and low by using dendrogram analysis method. The research results showed that 30 sample units of roadside greenery confirmed 11 roads in high, 9 roads in medium and 10 roads in low clusters. Because of SBE values various of the five criteria used in the assessment, the VQL of the three roadside greenery should be rearranged and improved. These research results, therefore, would make some contributions to the planner and manager of the Yogyakarta City.
Whether Perception or Expert Paradigm? Assessing Scenic Beauty of Nature Based Landscape
International Journal for Research in Emerging Science and Technology, 2014
In general, studies on scenic beauty assessment observed to flourish tremendously, due to the advance of knowledge in science, technology and socio-politics. Since then, many and new theories on the issue have been rigorously established in the West. Among these are the expert and perception based paradigms. Both paradigms received positive acceptance over the last century. Looking at this, it is unlikely to say, whether the expert is better than the perception or vice versa. The former is found to dominate the environmental management practice, while the latter is highly accepted among the researchers in the studies of landscape preference. The assessment’s procedure using the perception-based has solely relied on public’s participation, while the expert based requires the trained professionals from the disciplines of art and design, landscape architecture, planning, architecture, ecology, psychology, geography and many more. In principle, both authorities recognise the biophysical features of a landscape (e.g. greenery, water element, landform and etc.) as attributes to assess scenic beauty of nature based landscapes. The major difference between the two can be detected in the scenic beauty assessment’s procedures presented in the works of Clay and Daniel (2001) and Pierskalla &associates (2007). This paper describes the approach used in each paradigm having concentrated on the techniques of assessing scenic beauty of nature based landscapes. The insights provide a basic knowledge to young researchers with similar research interest and to the Malaysian authority that has concerned for preserving the natural beauty of its unique ecosystems.

Evaluation of the Natural Landscape Aesthetic: a Case Study of Uvs Province, Mongolia
Polish Journal of Environmental Studies
Natural landscape aesthetic is the natural resource that is essential for maintaining mental and physical health of humans. Therefore, a natural landscape is the source of human life. The aim of this study was to assess the natural landscape aesthetic of Uvs province, Mongolia, using a combination of the spatial multi-criteria decision-making method (MCDM) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based on Boolean and fuzzy logic. Ten different criteria were used for the analysis. We developed the aesthetic landscape assessment tier for Uvs province to evaluate each natural beauty indicator in five stages. The result shows that 13.2% of the area of Uvs province was highly suitable, 39.4% was suitable, and 46.7% was unsuitable for recreational purposes. The landscape aesthetic potential of Uvs province was mapped. The landscape aesthetic assessment for recreational purposes is possible using GIS and remote sensing technology based on a combination of the multi-criteria decision output and the proposed matrix. Future work should focus on other regions of Mongolia. The developed method of landscape aesthetic evaluation for recreational purposes can be used in land management.

Given that human inherently has beauty tendency by which all aspects of his life are affected and on the other hand aesthetical importance and appealing nature of landscapes in citizens lifestyle desirability as well as their interpretation on environment, to get knowledge and establish aesthetical principles in urban landscape have a great deal of importance, as it is considered as a major criterion to analysis and appraise antiquity and gentility of human civilization and residents(inhabitants) convenience as well. For this, the present research is aimed to present general qualities for an ideal environment introduced by different scholars followed by shedding lights on landscape concepts, its evolutionary process and its position in urban designing systems and dimensions according to descriptive-analytic algorithm. Finally having been legibility quality accepted, heterogeneity is explained as a an lite sub-quality involving enormous principles and its effects on aesthetic are eva...
Planning a greenway based on an evaluation of visual landscape attractiveness
Moravian Geographical Reports, 2016
The potential for using a standardized landscape evaluation method for planning a greenway in a young glacial area in northern Poland is evaluated in this paper. In the evaluation of visual landscape attractiveness (VLA), we took into account not only its natural but also its cultural components. The cultural components were divided into two groups, i.e. increasing and decreasing VLA scores. The sources of data needed for the evaluation included a Vector Smart Map level 2 (VMap L2), aerial photographs and a field survey. The newly-designated greenway links two landscape parks (which play the role of greenspaces) and runs along numerous lakes, forests, rivers, and objects of cultural heritage. The greenway is composed of existing local roads, allowing a more optimal utilisation of natural and cultural resources of the landscape, primarily those located between the selected greenspaces. Using this application, the idea of sustainable development can be implemented, and the overlapping...
