The Future and the Challenges of the Indonesian Banking Industry in the Digital Era

This article focuses on researching the IT challenges faced by the Indonesian banking industry in the digital age. The rapid development of technology has provided benefits for the banking sector in integrating technology to meet the demands of its customers. Although, this advantage comes with its challenges, as with the emergence of the fintech (financial technology) industry. This study uses an action research method, which is applied to identify challenges faced by conventional banks and provide solutions to overcome the identified challenges. Based on the analysis, it was found that conventional banks have a gap between their digital products and the expectations of their customers; in which majority of the respondent is engaging in the implementation of open application programming interface (API) to facilitate the digital banking activities of its customers via the software and the web-service product created by the Indonesian conventional banks. The implication is that the IT gap between banking services and their customers must be overcome. For this reason, it is recommended that conventional banks work together in order to meet customer expectations and/or banks can use a customer-centric approach in product development.

The purpose of this research is to see the change in operational services of credit submission from conventional to digital through the digital branch. This research used qualitative methods with the development through the IDEF0 framework model. Conventionally, the customers when served by a customer service bank to make a credit submission transaction must take around 2-3 weeks. Banking in Indonesia is currently making a new breakthrough by innovating in its operational service sector. The innovation is through the digital branch. Banking in Indonesia through the digital branch has been able to shorten the operational service time for digital credit submission to be only 5-7 days. The purpose of the study was too disruptive technology. The rapid changes in technology due to the innovation has brought an impacts in changes on human lifestyle. Technology simplifies and accelerates human being in doing its activity. The development of digital technology (disruptive technology) has an impact on all aspects of human life. The purpose of this research is to see the phenomenon of the conventional banking in Indonesia to make changes in its business processes in order to compete with Fintechs Company that is growing rapidly. This research method looks at the phenomenon on conventional banking in Indonesia by looking at the impact of technology and digital. The first phenomenon is the rapid development in the world currently occur in the digital economy, one of which is a digital-based financial service known as financial technology (FinTech). The second phenomenon is digital technology has been able to change the behavior of Indonesian people in all aspects of life, such as electronic books, electronic newspapers, online sales and public transportation (taxis and motorcycles). The third phenomenon is FinTechs services in Indonesia include Payment channel system, Digital Banking, Online/Digital Insurance, Peer-to-peer (P2P) Lending and Crow funding. Banks should be able to balance the development of this digital technology by providing new products that are close to customer's wishes. There is a gap that has not been served by banks in Indonesia that resulted in the emergence of potential benefits that can be taken by Startup Company (pioneer) FinTech in providing services and banking products. Banking in Indonesia can synergize with start-up companies (pioneer) FinTech by changing its business process by doing Business Process Reengineering (BPR).

Ako je prošlu deceniju bankarskog poslovanja obeležila prekomerna kreditna ekspanzija, danas govorimo u deceniji njegove digitalne transformacije. Usled uticaja digitalnih medija, velikih tehnoloških i promena u potrebama potrošača, banke su izložene digitalnom narušavanju svog poslovnog modela spolja i iznutra, što dovodi do inovacija u proizvodima, uslugama, distributivnim i prodajnim kanalima, poslovnim modelima i organizacionoj kulturi. Sektorske analize ukazuju da će buduća dobit sektora biti preusmerena ka onim finansijskim organizacijama koje uspešno koriste digitalne tehnologije za automatizaciju svojih procesa i kao analitička oruđa, kreiraju nove usluge i vrednosti za klijente koji žele da im banka bude uvek i svuda dostupna i transformišu organizacionu kulturu u agilnu i orijentisanu ka inovacijama.
