A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Using Language Games In Teaching Vocabulary” In Secondary School

Teaching students to understand vocabulary in the English language is important, and yet challenging. Students are not eager to learn vocabulary due to its complexity and would perceive that vocabulary lessons as dull and unexciting. With the purpose of injecting the element of play and learning in a vocabulary classroom, this study investigated the effectiveness of using language games in teaching vocabulary in a secondary school in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. Language games were chosen as they could expose students to a more fun and interactive way of learning vocabulary as element of fun in a learning environment would be appealing to students regardless of their varying learning styles and language proficiency. This study was conducted in a government secondary school in Shah Alam, Malaysia involving 33 Form 1 ESL students from a mixedproficiency class where data was collected quantitatively using Pre-test and Post-test questions and open ended and close ended questionnaires....

Language is used to express ideas and emotions, make sense of complex and abstract thought, communicate with others, express wants and needs and set rules and form culture. Currently, English is the lingua franca in education, science, information technology, business, aviation, entertainment, and diplomacy. About 80 percent of the English speakers are nonnative speakers (Braine, 2006 as cited in jerkins, 2007). Therefore, most of the countries in the world attach great importance to teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language and form their educational policies accordingly. In Turkey, English is learned as a foreign language to provide communication with other countries for a variety of purposes such as scientific, military, economic and social development. English is learned by different age groups, especially starting from 2 nd grades in state-run primary education. Ministry of Education specifies the objectives of learning English in state-run primary schools as: Students will demonstrate the knowledge of reading and writing in the target language, use language for communication and understand what they hear and read (MEB, 2006). To be able to achieve these objectives, it is important to know young learners more closely and put emphasis on their characteristics of language learning. Each learner is unique in learning. In other words, they may have different learning styles in learning vocabulary. Learning vocabulary is a part of language learning. It is an integral part of any kind of language learning since a good knowledge of vocabulary allows for a good communication. Young learners can learn a huge amount of vocabulary through games. All types of games may be used in an educational environment. Educational games are designed to assist young learners to learn about certain topics, enlarge perceptions, strengthen language development, understand a historical event or culture, or assist them in learning a skill as they play. As teachers, governments and parents, we should realize the psychological needs of children for games. Game is an interactive play that teaches young learners goals, rules, adaptation, problem solving, interaction abilities etc... They provide young learners the essential needs of vocabulary learning by providing enjoyment, passionate involvement, organization, motivation, imagination, inspiration, social communication and collaboration and feelings. Moreover, students learn without knowing it (Schultz & Fisher, 1988). In general, language games are the activities which are used in the classroom as a facilitator to boost foreign language acquisition. According to Hadfield, (1990, as cited in Deesri, 2002) "game is an activity which has certain rules, a goal and an element of fun". Games designers define the term 'game' as an organization in which players take part in an artificial conflict (Salen & Zimmerman, 2003).

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GAMES IN ENHANCING VOCABULARY FOR STUDENTS AT A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY

In recent years, teaching English has become a compulsory subject at schools, colleges, and universities. That is the reason why teaching and learning English effectively play a crucial role in the development of educational system. However, students seem to be weak in communicative skills due to they are lack of English vocabulary knowledge. The aim of this paper is to seek out the evidence to prove that teaching games are very helpful in the language classroom because this method helps to improve and increase students‟ vocabularies. The results show that language games not only enhanced students‟ lexical knowledge but also made the lesson more enjoyable, students became motivated in learning English and had plenty of interactions with teachers and classmates. The study suggests that before employing games in the language classroom, teachers should choose appropriate materials, levels, contexts, topics, time allowance for games.

Benefits And Disadvantages Of Games in Vocabulary Learning for Young Learner

As we know, learning a foreign language or a second language has become prevalent in many countries. It began to be taught in various schools in Indonesia, even a general lesson that must be studied. not only that the second language began to be taught in elementary school children as a provision or facilitate learning advanced language. The most commonly learned language learning is about how to make sentences (writing) as well as speaking (Speaking). These two components can be effective when based on a strong and many vocabulary. Vocabulary is the basic part and a key element to learn any language. Without vocabulary, children or someone will not be able to get an idea or understand what others are talking about. But there is little problem in memorizing vocabulary in children, namely the lack of habituation of the environment and also the boring memorizing method. Some methods to understand a fun vocabulary one of them is to use the game method. Antonaros and Couri (2003:6) Explain that games in foreign language classroom encourage and develop socialization, cooperating with other , learning self discipline , respecting rules and peer teaching and cooperative learning. Why is that so that the vocabulary does not look boring and seen too many words to be stored into memory. In this article the author tries to summarize what kind of games can be used to create a fun yet effective vocabulary learning, how to defect and when to use it.

The Benefits of Games in Teaching Vocabulary to Primary Students

The aim of this study was to examine the benefits of games in teaching vocabulary to primary students. Comparing the final results of the Experimental Group with those obtained before the experiment revealed remarkable progress in language achievement for each student. Teachers should use games in vocabulary lessons and not only (games can be also applied when teaching grammar structures), especially with primary students in order to increase their interest in learning English.

The Impact of Educational Games on Enhancing Elementary Stage Students' Acquisition and Retention of English Vocabulary

Learning EFL vocabulary is a difficult task so that teachers try as much as possible to facilitate it for their learners. One of the best strategies that can be used is educational games strategy. The goal of this research is to check the effectiveness of using the educational games strategy in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition and retention at the First stage of basic education pupils. The study adopted the quasi-experimental pre-post test control / experimental group design. The study sample consisted of 40 pupils in sixth elementary grade and was equally divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control one. Students of the experimental group learnt vocabulary through the educational game strategy, while students in the control group received regular instruction. Tools of the study included a pre-post vocabulary achievement test and a text course for grade six named Get Ready 6. The students submitted to a pre-post vocabulary achievement test and the results indicates that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental group and the control group in the pre/ post-test of English vocabulary achievement in favor of the experimental group.

The Effect of Games on Learning Vocabulary

Vocabulary learning has always been a major concern for those who want to learn a second language. The present study aimed at determination of effect of games on vocabulary gain of student. For this, two groups of students were chosen as control and experimental groups. The control group was exposed to textbook teaching between pretest and posttest; however, the experimental group was taught by games. Although both groups made noticeable progress after training program, there was no significant difference between the groups.

The Effect of Learning Vocabulary Through Games for Undergraduate and ESL Learners

Vocabulary learning through games is an exciting approach that can imprint longlasting learning experience. The second learners can benefit from the hands-on activities practiced in class which can enhance retention of new words. Language can be learned faster and easier by having fun in class that can also reduce the 'anxiety' factor in ESL students. This paper aims to examine the impact of vocabulary learning through games to get the educational benefits and how to incorporate games in a language classroom to enhance student learning. Moreover, this research paper analyzes the Vocabulary learning through games and activities for undergraduates and ESL students through. The games were developed Language skills, Vocabulary development. A quantitative survey questionnaire was adopted for this research. This research was conducted by 35 undergraduate students through convenient sampling techniques to analyze the effect of learning vocabulary through games. The study finding shows that English language is easy to learn by different by creative activities, physical games there is a quotation of Benjamin Franklin "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember". "Involve me and I learn." It draw attention of ELT learner's motivation through game type activities that could be easy to enhance their ability and for learning English language because language cannot be learned it needs to do practice and efforts from teachers, learners and as well as exposure to the target language.
