Cultural Housing Network Project under collaboration by The Department of National Park, Pidthong Foundation and Chulalongkorn University has been initiated as a social engagement to solve conflicts between the Department of National Park and Primitive Karen tribe villagers in this prohibited area. Pengotan Village is a traditional village known as a tourism village in which it has unique architectures of bamboo house settlements and its natural beauty. These resources have led to an increase in tourist visits. However, the increase has led to the growth of tourist facilities such as accommodations and restaurants. Traditional Settlements Bungaya Traditional Village, Karangasem regency, has a uniqueness of traditional dwelling patterns that become local character of the region. However, along with the development of tourism in this village, the traditional settlement is not only a pride, but also the object of commodification. This is an interesting phenomenon where on the one hand, people try to maintain their traditional residential identity to attract tourists visiting, but, on the other hand, they change their dwelling as a tourism facility. The change is a challenge and a pressure for maintaining the traditional configuration as an identity. This is a phenomenon of conflict in the development of a cultural tourism area. On the one hand, tourists expect a natural and original nature and culture. On the other hand, society and culture change as the society interacts with the outside culture and the desire to accommodate the needs of the visiting tourists. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the paradoxical phenomenon of changes in the morphology of residential patterns in Bungaya Village and explore the conflict between conservation of traditional housing character and tourism demand. By conducting field studies (measurements), of selected stratified random sampling houses, and interviews, to examine the impact of changes on values and their meanings, this study will discuss changes in the physical configuration, meanings and values of a traditional house. This research will explore the original roles and meanings of altered housing that can still be maintained and the new roles and values contained in the new configuration. In this study will also discuss the impact of new values on the meaning and value of the original configuration. With the identification of the morphologic character of the residential pattern, it is expected to be a model of change and provide an appropriate perspective for the community, the government and the tourism actors in transforming the traditional housing in Bungaya Village, Karangasem Regency.
Individual Practice and Cultural Context in the Transformation of Batak Toba House

Batak Toba people today are facing the dilemma of maintaining their tradition and keeping up to the modern way of living. This has resulted in cultural transformation of traditional houses, where modern utensils and new spaces are added with no reference to the original one. Adaptability of Folkways: Buddhist Thai vernacular houses of Songkhla Lake Basin

This research has explored the relationships between community ecosystems and folkways in the context of modern development, especially how these relationships are manifested in the changing physical characteristics of their vernacular houses. Using qualitative methods and a holistic approach to study tradition and change, three Thai-Buddhist communities around Songkhla Lake Basin were selected for comparative study. Data were derived from documentary sources, direct and participant observation, in-depth interviews and architectural drawings. It was found that the traditional communities in different local micro-ecosystems were transformed to be a new characteristic of Southern Thai dwellings underlie the emergence of hybrid economic and society. However, kinship ties, their Buddhist beliefs and experience of adaptability reinforce the existent of local identities. Traditional houses in Gunung Sari Pakraman Village, Jatiluwih Village, Tabanan, have a specific spatial configuration of traditional houses that becomes the local identity of the area. However, with the development of tourism in this village, traditional houses are not only a source of pride, but they also serve as an object of commodification. This is an interesting phenomenon in which on the one hand the people try to keep the identity of the traditional houses to attract tourists, while on the other hand they transform their houses into tourist accommodation facilities. Therefore, the aims of this study are to investigate the paradoxical phenomenon of the house transformation in this village; to find out what actually the design of the traditional vernacular house is; to explore the actual role and meaning of the transformed houses that can still be preserved; to find out the extent of the impact of the transformation and the factors causing such transformation; to explore the new roles and values that constitute the new configuration and discuss the impact of the new values on the meaning and values of the original configuration. Furthermore, this research will explore the differing aims that are to preserve the traditional house characteristics and to meet the tourism demands. Field observations were conducted at some houses selected by the stratified random sampling technique and interviews were carried out to explore the impact of the transformation of physical configuration on the values and meanings of traditional houses. With the identification of the characteristics of this transformation, it is expected that this study can be a reference on house transformation and provide a decent perspective for the community, government and tourism players on the transformation of traditional houses in Gunung Sari Pakraman Village, Jatiluwih Village, Tabanan.
