The study research design is a 4x2x2 factorial design with a sample of 192 respondents. Parental Attitude towards problem children, a scale developed by Rangaswamy was used in the study. Results: Overall mean score obtained from the study indicates that there was a parental negative attitude towards children with mental retardation, and there is a positive correlation of overprotection with education and future, home management and total attitude. Discussion: There is a positive correlation of overprotection with education and future, home management and total attitude. The three main variables of the study (severity of mental retardation, sex and age) when interact with each other do not affect significantly on the parental attitudes towards children with mental retardation. Impact of disability of mentally retarded persons on their parents
Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 2008
Mental retardation is a permanent condition unlike many other diseases. It is a highly prevalent and highly disabling condition. In this study an attempt has been made to study both positive and negative impact on parents so as to help manage this problem in the best possible way. The study was conducted at the outpatient department of P.G.I. Behavioral and Medical Sciences, Raipur, and two special schools of mentally challenged children and it was done by purposive sampling method. Using specially designed semi-structured sociodemographic and clinical data sheet, information was gathered about mentally challenged children and their parents. Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) and Developmental Screening Test (DST) were used to assess their intelligence. Parents fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria consenting for the study were selected. National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped Disability Impact Scale (2003) was then administered on them. The results are reported and discussed.
A Study on Parental Attitude and Needs of the Parents Having Children with Intellectual Disability
The present study aimed to assess and understand the attitude and needs of the parents having children with intellectual disability. Thirty parents (both father & mother) were including in the sample from general services of National Institute for the mentally handicapped, Secunderabad. The assessment was done by using “A Scale to measure, parental attitude towards mental retardation (Rangswami, 1986) and NIMH-FAMNS (Parents) to measure needs of the parents”. In the present study Data was analyzed by using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 17.0). Mean, S.D, independent “t” test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation was calculated. The results of study indicated that Disability in children gives rise to various needs in parents, which may vary according to the nature of disability and parental characteristic one among these characteristics is attitude. Attitude and needs are interrelated; when parental attitude is positive towards their children they express more concern and needs. In present study, parents of children with moderate mental retardation showed high positive attitude than mild and severe. The majority of parents showed medium positive attitudes toward their children with intellectual disability. Further researches are needed to conduct on large sample which will help towards better generalization. Keywords: Attitude, Needs of parents, Intellectual disability

Mentally retarded persons as parents: Prevalence and the situation of their children
Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 1997
This paper describes a research program on mentally retarded parents and their children. For this nation-wide study, two structured questionnaires were sent to all municipalities in Norway. Both questionnaires were sent to public health nurses and were followed-up by a structured telephone interview based on the questionnaires. The primary aim of the study was to survey the number of children born to mentally retarded parents. In addition, the children's needs and functional abilities were to be assessed. Twenty-three mentally retarded persons had given birth in the course of the past twelve months. A total of 126 children with mentally retarded parents were identified, with an incidence of 27 children per year, and a prevalence of approximately 430 children under 16 years of age in a population of 4 mill. people with a mean of 1.05 child per family. About 43% of the children of mentally retarded parents appeared to have learning difficulties. Forty percent of the children suffered from failures of care. Between 25% and 68% of the children with learning problems had poorly developed motor or language abilities, sense modalities or psycho-social status.
