The Use of Podcast to Improve Students' Listening and Speaking Skills for EFL Learners

This study investigated the use of podcast to develop students' English skills, listening and speaking. Technology has produced prominent contribution on education in this information age. It is well known as edutechnology. Podcast is one of interactive medias applied to support learning process in the classroom in developing listening and speaking skills. This study reviewed some previous researchs and designed teaching instructions using Podcast. The result found that the potential achievement in using technology affected both students and teachers. Students motivately engaged themselves to sharpen their English achievements; listening and speaking with technology experiences. They obtained various instructions and interesting learning atmosphere. Besides, the teacher was also challenged to have an ability to integrate technology tools (such as Podcast) to perform a creative instruction in classroom setting. Podcast provided tremendeous topics and activities which make teachers and students enrich their knowledge as well as mastery their skills in educational purposes.

The significance of Podcasting for EFL learning

The use of podcasts as language teaching and learning has obtained more attention today. Podcasts have been used mostly to improve students' listening skill that is proven by numerous studies to determine how podcasts might assist students in improving their listening skills. Whereas, podcasting promotes activities for the students to practice their whole English skills. This is a literature research that provides a review of podcasting to assist EFL learners in mastering English. As many as 20 articles were used as the data sources in arranging this article. The researchers searched the articles using the keywords ‘podcast’ and ‘podcasting’. The difference between this article among previous studies is the focus on the use of podcasting for EFL learnings. The previous studies mostly discussed podcasts and podcasting for improving listening ability. The review found that podcasting is an interesting medium to be used in English learning. However, several challenges arise such as lack of technological competence, lack of vocabulary and grammar, unstable internet connection, and limited facilities. Consequently, it is advised that when using podcasts, teachers give their students appropriate direction on how to maximize their potential.

EFFECTS OF VIDEO-PODCASTS ON LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF SAUDI EFL LEARNERS

The current use of podcasts, as a new channel to input knowledge, has effectively been promoting listening comprehension which consequently has increased the acquisition of target language. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of video-podcasts integration on listening comprehension. The twelve-week quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test design. Samples included in both the control and experimental groups were 120 English major male undergraduates from a University in Saudi Arabia. The Findings of ANCOVA analysis showed that the video-podcast group significantly outperformed the control group on the post-test. The findings imply that video-podcasts are useful resource for enhancing EFL learners’ listening comprehension.

The Effects of Podcasting on EFL Upper-Intermediate Learners’ Speaking Skills

Podcasting is increasingly being used by language teachers as a tool for delivering educational materials and encouraging learning outside of the traditional classroom. The present study aimed at investigating the effects of podcasting on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skills. A total of 60 Iranian EFL upper-intermediate learners participated in the study. The participants were divided into three groups: two experimental and one control group. The treatments comprised learners producing podcasts of their pair and group discussions and uploading them to a podcasting service. Learners’ performance, in both experimental and control groups, were pre- and post-tested. The results of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed that the inclusion of podcasting in the language classrooms had a positive effect on EFL learners’ speaking skills in the experimental groups. The results also showed that the learners in the student-made podcast group improved more on their speaking skills compared to the other groups. The results also indicated that podcasting incorporated within a preplanned syllabus (textbook) likely produces better results than podcasting as a main teaching material.

EFL Students’ Attitudes towards the Use of Podcasts as a Language Learning Medium to Increase Learning Interest

The study on the use of podcast as a technology-mediated method or medium to increase EFL students' interest is still limited. Generally, some studies focus more on the effects of using podcast on students' listening and speaking skills. The present study aimed at examining the effect of podcast in English language learning towardss EFL students' interest by analyzing their attitudes to podcast. The study was carried out using a quantitative method by employing a cross-sectional survey. Data collection was employed through a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by using a descriptive statistics to measure the frequency percentages. The results indicated that the tertiary students' showed a very positive attitude towardss the use of podcast to influence EFL students' interest. Four findings were suggested, namely the willingness of using podcast, courage to encourage EFL learning engagements and language proficiency, podcasts as appropriate and fun learning media providing varied materials, and podcast as a the portable, open-accessed and efficient medium. The findings of the present study are significant to present the Info-Tech-based alternative language learning media and sources or as complementary resources and the innovative and interesting sources can motivate to engage more. Podcasts is the complementary medium and authentic materials for empowering English engagements and increasing interest.

Pre-Service EFL Teachers’ Perception of Using Podcast as a Learning Media to Improve Listening Skills

The podcast is one of the popular tools of technology that can be used to support English language learning, especially in listening skills. The Effect of Podcasting on Iranian EFL Learners' Motivation and Attitude

What is so-called as internet disruption alters the paradigms as well as realms of today's English language learning-teaching over the worlds, that is facilitating ESL learning through Multimedia language learning. Digital technologies-based language learning, podcasts, contribute to the authenticity of language learning (contextual learning), and thorough comprehension through words-images collaboration. This learning perspective is under the cognitive theory underpinning on the three assumptions; the dual channel assumption, the limited capacity assumption, and the active learning assumption. The Effect of Podcasts on Developing Listening Comprehension Ability among Iranian EFL Intermediate Students

The purpose of the present study was to explore the effect of podcasts on developing listening comprehension ability among Iranian EFL Intermediate Iranian Arab students. To fulfill the objectives of the study a homogeneity test (Oxford Quick Placement Test) was administered among students at the pre-intermediate level of Smile Language Institute. Two intact classes, namely the control and experimental groups were chosen for the study. The participants of this study were 61 language learners who were selected among pre-intermediate students from Smile English language institute in Chahmobarak, Iran. The control group is containing 30 students and the experimental group of 30 students. Before starting the treatment, a validated teacher-made listening comprehension test was administered to the students as a pre-test to assess the participants' listening comprehension at the beginning of the course. Then, the experimental group received the treatment, which was teaching listening comprehension through using podcasts while the control group was taught using traditional methods of teaching listening with no multimedia source. After 18 sessions of treatment, the two groups were administered the same teacher-made listening test with little modifications as a post-test. The data were analyzed by paired and independent samples t-tests. The findings showed that the experimental group significantly performed better than the control group. Generally, the experimental group outperformed the control group. The results suggest that podcasts can be used in English classes to develop the listening ability among Iranian Arab EFL learners.

Podcast Applications in Language Learning: A Review of Recent Studies

Many dynamic approaches have emerged due to computer technology in facilitating language learning skills. Podcasting is one such novel tool being exploited by teachers to deliver educational content and to encourage learning outside the classroom. Research on podcasting pedagogy suggests that podcasting greatly helps learners develop various skills of English language. The study reviewed twenty journal articles to determine the effects of podcast on ESL students' language skills and attitude levels. It was found that podcasts greatly support learning not just in speaking and listening but also in other language skills and areas such as grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.
