Strategic positioning – instrument of port system competitiveness analysis
2007
The effects of distance and location of the port regarding the place in the hinterland cause different space and economic relationships between the port and the hinterland. The issue of absolute level of transport costs is included in this interdependence without interest. Decisive for the situation of ports is the height of additional transportation costs (caused by the difference between the optimal and the minimal transport distances) which are compared or opposed to cargo handling costs at ports. The range of additional transportation costs is exclusively dependent on the minimal and optimal distances, which can be influenced either by getting the companies nearer to the port or by shortening the optimal distances. The mechanism of factors that act on the location of seaports, acts in the same way also on the ports. Only the problem of congestion of cargo flows shows certain deviations, i.e. in ports a significant role lies in the competitiveness of land transport. Past research...
Repositioning Strategy in the Maritime Port Business: A Case Study from Montenegro, Port of Adria
PROMET - Traffic&Transportation
The main objective of this paper is to define the repositioning strategy of the Port of Adria, which is the leading container maritime port of Montenegro. The strategy is an integral reflection of the analysis of internal (competitive advantage and financial strength) and external (the potential of container maritime port industry and environmental stability) repositioning criteria. The case study in this paper is mainly accomplished through the definition of specific propositions that clarify the connections between these criteria and the repositioning strategy. Knowledge and attitudes of stakeholders are used with the purpose of modeling a marketing strategy, which is based on an inductive study. The paper proposes a model based on a specific maritime port case which can be applied to any other case of maritime port repositioning as well.
Strategic Analysis of Seaports using Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making Methods and TOWS
2013
Aim of This research is a Strategic analysis of seaports using multiple-criteria decision-making methods. At first, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Iranian seaports has been extracted from literature. Then, with respect to the importance concluded from LIKRET questionnaire distributed between experts (taking the views of the experts and specialist), five high importance factors of each strategic groups have been chosen and used in ANP analysis. When, all pricewise comparison have been done, the global weights of each factor calculated and then, four strategy alternatives have been determined with respect to the importance of each TOWS factors. Finally, after final calculation, the highest priority is assigned the SO strategy (Development of port and maritime transport facilities, utilizing modern technologies to develop transit trade in Iranian ports.), The ST strategy (Development of the trade, marketing, promotion and advertisement of transit corridors (Nor...

Ports are a significant part of the global and regional cargo supply chain and transport network. Since the performance of ports has a significant impact on the economic growth of their countries, it is necessary to constantly analyse and plan port performance, to anticipate market trends and to improve the ability of a port to withstand the increasing overall competitive pressure. In port performance, not only physical ability to handle the flow of cargo, but also the potential competition for cargo is important. The methods presented in the scientific literature provide with an opportunity to evaluate only the technical efficiency of ports, completely excluding the aspect of financial performance of ports or the prospects for developing competitive advantages. Whereas, financial analyses are not suitable to study port performance. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop the evaluation model of seaports' performance that would enable assessing the financial situation of the organisation and determining its position in the market in relation to its competitors. The article analyses the factors of business competitiveness and the methods for their evaluation as well as the theoretical aspects of applying financial analysis. After different methodologies and evaluation models proposed by different authors are analysed, the economic evaluation model of port performance developed by the authors of the present article is presented. By applying this model, the evaluation of the performance of the Baltic seaports is carried out.
The Competitive Position of Seaports: Introduction of the Value Added Concept
International journal of maritime economics, 2000
The performance of a seaport mn be assessed in strategic terms by means of portfolio analyses based on traffic volumes expressed in nominal tons. This article suggests that differences in the creation of value added among traffic mtegories mn great1y contribute to such strategic assessment. A weighted analysis of traffic data allows the identifimtion of market niches with potential for future development. However, the actual weighing of traffic volumes usually lacks transparency and is based on weighing rules which have only limited validity. Therefore, these rules mnnot be viewed as appropriate for a generalised use in the context of seaport comparisons. In this paper, an 'Antwerp rule' and a 'range rule' are developed, based on relevant maritime traffic information. The former rule mn be usefully applied to data on the Antwerp port, whereas the latter allows the introduction of the value added concept in comparative traffic studies that include all ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. The introduction of intrinsic mrgo handling tons in port comparisons enables ports with important volumes of general mrgo, such as Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Hamburg, to improve their competitive position.

Rasch Model as a Tool for Strategic Positioning of Commercial Seaports
Journal of Maritime Research
Since the nineties, when the management and financing model of the Port Authorities changed, they have developed their business in a highly competitive environment. Against this background, and considering that the Spanish Port System may be oversized, it seems interesting to know the position of each Port Authority by analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. The objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of two potentially competing Port Authorities according to the variable "innovative effort". First we analyze its strengths and weaknesses compared to the national situation and then we carry out a comparative analysis and benchmarking between the two authorities.

Evaluation Framework of Seaports' Competitiveness Increasing Projects
Montenegrin Journal of Economics
The subject of research in this article is evaluation methods of seaport's competitiveness increasing investment projects. This paper develops evaluation framework for assessing investment projects through all the stages: since determining the need for investment to post-evaluation of the impact made. In the course of the analysis on the investment projects evaluation models the systematic, comparative and logical analysis of the scientific literature has been employed. The theoretical data processing method has been used to summarize and present conclusions and recommendations. It starts with the hypothesis that project evaluation holistic framework suggested by Zidane could be used for assessment of the competitiveness increasing projects in seaports. The article concluded that analysed holistic framework after its adoption and extension is suitable for evaluation of competitiveness increasing projects. The developed investment project evaluation framework can be used both in private and public seaports. It enables the decision makers to correctly assess the situation, the need for investments, the total amount of the capital needed, the implementation timeframe and project scale in accordance with investment project relevance; determine the payback period, cash flows and social welfare generated by the project, their net present value, IRR and discounted payback period. The model also enables to assess additional factors impacting on investment criteria: the effect of inflation on the cost of capital; working capital requirements; taxation; risk and uncertainty. Ex-post BCA allows learning about the accuracy and efficacy of ex-ante BCA and if the purpose of the project was reached in order to better the evaluation technique for future investment projects.
