An Approach of English Teaching for Automotive and Vehicle Engineering Students

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is generally interpreted as an approach to learning English based on the goals/needs of the learner. In the context of learning English in Indonesia, both at secondary and tertiary schools, especially for automotive students, the ESP approach is a popular choice. The application of this approach is in line with the government policy in the field of education which emphasizes the purpose of learning English, namely to improve the ability of students to use English, especially for academic and professional career needs with an emphasis on reading skills that allow students to understand authentic material topics according to their majors. effectively. This article puts forward a theoretical study of the basic concepts of ESP including its definition and role as a learning approach, along with related issues including needs analysis as the main feature of ESP, syllabus, learning objectives, materials, methodology, and evaluation of ESP-based English learning.

Need Analyses have a wide definition in educational system which is used as the first step to conduct curriculum, syllabus, teaching and learning material, and others. In this case, it focuses on finding primary data about English learning material for diploma degree students of Mechanical Engineering. By doing this study, researcher collected the information about the needs toward English teaching material which is divided into three types need analyses such as; Present Situation Analysis (PSA), Target Situation Analysis (TSA), and Learning Needs Analysis. It used multiple-methods where the data were collected by questionnaire and interview and analysed both of qualitative and quantitative. The participants of this research are 28 people of Diploma degree Students of mechanical engineering in ITP, an English lecturer who taught in mechanical engineering, and 2 mechanical lecturers at ITP. The result presented the ability and interest of students in English, objectives and conditions of the using English, and the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) as approach of learning material that the students' need for their future. In brief, learning material should consider all of the aspect that is found from the need analyses result in order to relate and be relevant for the learners. Thus, the learners will be motivated and enjoy the learning process because the learning material is appropriate with them.

The aims of this study are: (1) to identify the needs of grade 11 students of Automotive Engineering Study Program in learning reading and writing, and (2) to develop appropriate English reading and writing learning materials. This is research and development that employed Jolly and Bolitho’s model (1998) with some adaptation. The procedure of the development consists of conducting needs analysis, designing the syllabus, developing learning materials, expert judgment, conducting field testing, and materials evaluation. The subject of the research were 64 grade XI students of TKR (Light Vehicle Engineering) at VHS 1 of Purworejo. The instruments used to collect the qualitative and quantitative data are questionnaires, interview guide, and observation sheet. The study aimed to identify the English language needs of engineering students from the perspective of stakeholders. The study used quantitative and qualitative methods, including questionnaires and interviews to gather data on the students' English language skills, their perceived needs, and their goals for learning English. The participants of the study were engineering students in the preparatory year (n= 894) at The Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology in Kafrelshiekh and The Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology in El-Mahala, teaching staff (n=17), and engineering employers (n=9). The study found that engineering students need to develop their English language skills to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing with equal importance among all the language skills. The study also highlights the need for developing an English course specifically for engineering students to meet their specific needs and help them succeed in their studies and careers. The findings of the study can be used to develop more effective ESP courses and curricula for engineering students, which can help them succeed in their studies and careers.

The purpose of the study was three-folds: to evaluate students' needs, to evaluate the psychometric qualities of the developed questionnaire, and to explore the possibility of writing a textbook based on the insights gained from the study. To evaluate the students' needs, wants, and lacks (Hutchinson and Waters, 1987), a questionnaire was administered to 225 students at Sharif University of Technology when they took their final exams. Students' scores were made use of with respect to one dimension of the questionnaire which dealt with students' self assessment of themselves most of which correlate positively with their final scores. Another purpose of the study was to evaluate the questionnaire itself in terms of its statistical properties. In other words, a construct validation study was conducted. There were distinct parts to this questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation was applied to see if different needs were neatly delineated by the questionnaire (see Hatch and Lazaraton, 1991 for limitations of PCA). Having applied a CFA with PCA using a three-factor solution, it was seen that items loaded on the expected factors with high loadings. In terms of students' needs, here are the findings: Translation was not deemed appropriate. Note taking was not considered important in their future careers. Technical writing was considered to be very important. Unfortunately, the skill has been totally ignored in the English curriculum in the university.

English for Specific Purposes in tertiary level puts its importance to Need Analysis (NA) process for syllabus design. This present research is concerned with designing ESP syllabus for Mechanical Engineering students in tertiary level through need analysis. The research aims to identify the immediate needs of the Mechanical Engineering students and design appropriated syllabus based on students’ needs using Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA). In order to achieve the research’s objectives, a questionnaire was administered to a total 50 respondents. The finding of the research shows that among 4 basic English skills, listening skill emerged as the most important skill that students’ really need, followed by speaking, reading, and writing. Thus, this research suggests that ESP teachers should design more varied activities on listening course that students will have the competence to apply the skills later in future life context.

Theoretically, teaching English in Vocational High Schools (VHS) should relate to and support specific skills required by students based on their major. In reality, teaching English in Indonesian VHS is mostly similar to general schools. Discussions on this issue have been long contested by many researchers in diverse contexts, yet, little focus was given to the Industrial Machinery Engineering major. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the actual needs of students in industrial machinery engineering in learning English. By administering questionnaires to 200 students at a VHS in Medan, this mixed-method study seeks the students' comprehension of the types of English language skills they used, the purpose of learning these skills, their ability to use the skills, and the basic English language skill they must acquire as part of their English language course arrangement.
