THE FRAMING OF COVID-19: A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF Op-Ed PAGES

In content construction, media use specific frames in presenting information to its audience. The core focus of this study is to investigate the frames used by newspapers on their Op-Ed pages while covering Covid-19. Qualitative content analysis approach is deployed to analyze the 491 Op-Ed pieces collected from three newspapers; however, frequency of articles has also been presented in this paper. Coronavirus captures the world, and the role of media is considered to be very important. How media frame the coronavirus? Data is coded by applying Open Coding and Axial Coding procedures. Two major frames a) SocioEconomic Frames and b) Psychological Frames, emerged from the data.

To understand newspapers’ Covid-19 portrayal in the Philippines and contribute to COVID-19 media framing literature, this study identified news frames in 97 banner stories of three Philippine broadsheets and determined how major frames depicted COVID- 19 during its initial spread in the country (January 30 - March 25, 2020). Utilizing deductive and inductive approaches to generate news frames for coding, results yielded 12 frames in the three newspapers, with Action, New Evidence, Reassurance, Conflict, Economic Consequence, and Social Consequence as major frames. Generally, the newspapers’ pandemic depiction was similar in foregrounding government response and new COVID-19 information instead of news that invites fear and panic. Variations were found in the newspapers’ individual focus on the pandemic, conflicts about it, and its economic effects – nuances which reflected the newspapers’ reputation. Results identify the need for developing people’s critical media and information literacy skills. Studying COVID-19 news framing in developing these skills is recommended.
Communicating health crisis: a content analysis of global media framing of COVID-19

Background: This study examines the global media framing of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to understand the dominant frames and how choice of words compares in the media. Periods of health crisis such as the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic add to the enormous burden of the media in keeping people constantly informed. Extant literature suggests that when a message is released through the media, what matters most is not what is said but how it is said. As such, the media could either mitigate or accentuate the crisis depending on the major frames adopted for the coverage.Methods: The study utilises content analysis. Data were sourced from LexisNexis database and two websites that yielded 6145 items used for the analysis. FRAMING THE COVID-19 RESPONSE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF MANILA BULLETIN AND RAPPLER

This study compared Manila Bulletin’s and Rappler’s framing of the Philippine Government’s COVID-19 Response. The two news outlets’ articles from 2021 with the term ‘COVID-19 Response’ and ‘pandemic response’ in the title were selected for this study. The study employed a descriptive design. Descriptive statistics and t-test were used to compare Manila Bulletin’s and Rappler’s framing of the Philippine Government’s COVID-19 Response. This study revealed that Manila Bulletin and Rappler both used the Responsibility frame the most in their articles. Additionally, Rappler did not use the Morality/Religion frame as much as compared to Manila Bulletin. On average, they generally had a more positive tone in their frames. However, Manila Bulletin tended to frame in a positive manner while Rappler framed negatively. Thus, considering their difference in tone, the study recommends that when reading news articles on a particular topic, especially involving politics, they read from various news outlets. As a reliable means for the public, mass media is a critical medium to be used to disseminate information predominantly in crisis. At the end of 2019, the world faced a new pandemic, later known as the COVID-19 pandemic, after scientists identified the virus that caused this infection. The media coverage of this cause accelerated and became more expansive after the spread of a group of shocking pictures of infected cases who died on the roads and streets due to this disease. People have turned to the mass media to find out what was happening, and at the same time, media outlets interacted differently with this pandemic. The Jakarta Post.com played a major role in delivering the latest information for Covid-19 virus. The current issue regarding the Covid-19 pandemic is about (1) the role of the government in making policies to deal with Covid-19, especially in Jakarta, (2) The role of the media in conveying information about Covid-19. News is not necessarily present in the community, but is mobilized by the media. Information relating to an issue, framed in such a way as to be presented to the reader. This research wants to see how the Covid-19 issue is framed through the news of The Jakarta Post.com in March 2020. The method used is the R. Entman Framing analysis. This study analyzes the news framing of Covid-19 using four elements of R. Entman: defining the problem, diagnosing the cause, moral judgment, and treatment recommendations. The conclusion of this study states that The Jakarta Post.com puts the news in a balanced manner. Apart from providing support to the government, this media also acts as a control medium for government policies, particularly the Jakarta government.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic that purpoted to originate in the city of Wuhan draws a lot of questions on the extent of crisis health communication concerning the international media. At the inception stage, in January 2020, it was reported that about ten major cities in China had been affected by this virus at that time labelled as 2019 nCov. By March 10, 2020, the disease had spread to Europe, the UK, Middle-East, and Africa, with more than 114,344 confirmed cases reported globally. In this situation, various scholars have often criticized the media for framing, misinformation, or exaggeration in the news information. In contrast, others have hailed the media for playing an educative and informative role to the public. Utilizing content analysis, framing and consecutive day sampling, this study focused on examining the media coverage of the initial two months of the COVID-19 Pandemic by four international news media organizations namely; BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera and the People's Daily. The article contributes to the discourse of mass media practice, and application of various research paradigm in deconstructing media framing during critical periods.

News discourse concerning COVID-19 is currently a trending topic in the world since it has affected world economic sector. Moreover this pandemic that has taken place since March 2020 has become a lively headline for discussion because of the massive transmission of the virus with an increasing number of infected people every day. This outbreak caused. The mass media from each country has a various way of producing news about COVID-19. It will be differently interpreted based on the diverse perspectives. News media plays an active role on framing COVID-19 issues. Since the news production is cultural and political based, it will be interested to compare the news framing of 2 countries with different cultural and political background. Therefore this research aims to compare how the German and Indonesian online media on framing news themed COVID-19. The data are related news from selected by related keywords through search engine. The framing theory from Pan and Kosicki (1993) is adopted to analyse the data. The findings reveal that German media frames COVID-19 as a new health problem that must be solved scientifically. Meanwhile Indonesian media frames this virus as a new financial problem.
